I'm surely not a big enough Nick fan to be a Hilltopper, sorry.
it would probably be a great move for coach, especially financially. i'd say he's got enough years in to retire from virginia. he could retire and draw his pension, go to tennessee and coach, and get paid again. plus he's accomplished about all that a man can accomplish at gate city, and along with the fact that it may be a few years before gate city can compete for a state championship, i'd say it would be a great move for him.
I would wish Coach Colobro luck, but it's not the Gate City Colobros but the Gate City Blue Devils where I graduated. No way I could give up that tradition and pride.

The biggest thing here is that Tennessee pays your insurance after you retire as well and he could work there 5 years get retirement in Tennessee and have insurance.
Exactly. It would be the same situation as Coach Richards did.
Coach Nick is a class act and if this is true, SWVA will lose a good coach. Did the Gate City fans give him a lot of grief over this past year? If so that may have influenced his decision. Any way best wishes to Coach Nick.
Gosh, I sure do think it would be a good move fer everyone....except SH better be ready fer 3 running plays and punt team....
Sometimes Nick will try some trickery and after they run the ball inside the opponents 20 averaging 7 YPC he will throw 3 passes and pooch kick.

Exactly
I think it would be a great move for coach Colobro. But who says Nick Colobro will no longer be the coach at GC? I can't imagine a better replacement than Nick Jr. He was born for the job.
When coach had athletes - years like 97 and 03 come to mind - he did pretty good. He should have all the athletes he can handle in Johnson City. I wouldn't expect the T to travel with coach. The T will remain in GC, however, until we get the horses to run a better system. Say what you will about play calling, but at the end of the day you have to play the cards you're dealt.
Barry Jones for Head Coach.

That and fire Reed.
Financially, it would be the best move for him. Either way he would continue to have success.

I agree. But head coach at PV.
No offence to Nick Jr. but you don't get handed one of the top programs in the state as your first head coaching job. They've got one of the best coaches in the state sitting in the press box with a ton of experience. I just don't see someone getting that job handed to them after helping with the team for a couple of years.
I think it should be Barry's when Nick does decide to step down, if the time is anytime near the present. I have heard it is Reed's to lose, which I just don't understand. Also, what about Houseright coming back as HC at GC? You really haven't seen that mentioned on here, which surprises me.
From all of the rest of us who still have to play GC, PLEASE DON'T GIVE IT TO BARRY JONES!
I'd take Barry and Housey both. Our defense is nowhere near what it was. A once feared defense is now one of the biggest jokes. Reed hasn't proved anything to me. I'm still confused as to how he got the defensive coordinator position. I can still see the boys at the PV game standin on the field when PV was goin for it on a crucial 4th down and were with their arms in the air waiting for him to call a play. He just stood there with his hands in his pockets. I think we have some good kids, I think we have talented kids, but if they don't have someone lightin a fire under their tails they'll never compete for another title.
Colobro is not going to go anywhere!!! This is the first thing that that i have heard about this!!
just because you've not heard about it doesn't mean it isn't true.
if it is true, and the job is offered to him, and coach colobro can retire from virginia, he'd be crazy not to take it.
He has talked with them. We shall see.
When Coach Fry decided to hang it up he hand picked a young man to replace him who could stay with the program for 20 years or more. Nick Jr is that man in GC. since Housright left after the 1997 season I have seen little to no drop off in the defense under Reed except for 98 and last season. I'm sure Barry Jones is a good coach, but since he brought the PV blocking scheme to GC they (PV) have owned us. Why cant Jones beat his old team?
I love Bill Housright, but he quit on the kids at Rye Cove and he quit on the kids at Twin Springs. No one is going to give him the chance to quit on the kids at Gate City.
Coach Colobro was also a head coach prior to coming to Gate City. If he leaves, they need someone that's a proven head coach.

When Reed gets the job it will be the last time I ever attend a GC football game. The defense has done nothing but dive down hill since he took it over.
For $80+ thousand per year? Why wouldn't Colobro take it if offered?!
Id coached Saddams trials lawyers for 80,000
Before you decide whos gonig to be the next Gate City coach is Colobro even going to leave?
I have no idea why you just asked me that.
If Science Hill hires him, Coach C is gone. When he applied for the head spot at CVC in 90 or 91 there was an assembly where he told the kids he might be leaving. As far as I know nothing has happened to that effect. When questioned face to face about leaving for Johnson City Coach just flashed the trademark grin and said "I don't think I'm what they're looking for."
I hope something can be worked out to where he stays at GC, one way or the other. As you all know I'm a Colobro guy. Its funny to me that I always seem on the flip side of the coin compared to other GC fans on this forum. I support Nick Jr. as the first choice for the job if the old man moves on. My second choice for the job would be Darren Reed. Neither of those options is popular on the board. My third and fourth choices are Gilbert Smith and Bill Housright. As you can see, I like to keep it in the family.
Maybe that is the source of another rift between me and the other GC guys on here: Barry Jones. It surprises me that this guy is so readily accepted in the face of, what appears to me, a lack of results. Now the first thing someone is going to say is that Coach C is an out of town guy. Whether he is the exception that proves the rule is something we will see in the next few seasons.
In a perfect world I would give the head coaching / offensive coordinator spot to Tony Martin. He is the determining factor in GC's 2003 state title. At the defensive coordinator spot would be Dollar Bill Housright. He is the determining factor for GC's 1997 state title. At any rate, if everyone on here knew Nick Jr. on a personal level and not from a fans perspective they would see that he is the man for the job. There is my opinion, stated and restated, and that's all I'll say about it. Respectfully, we GC guys will just have to agree to disagree.
i didnt ask you that, i just replyed to the most recent post which happend to be you
I played for Barry at Pv in 94 and 95, and let me be the first to tell you that Coach Jones was a huge reason powell valley dominated in the 80's and 90's. Also may i point out that we have not won a single state title since barry has left, and we've only played in one state game. Which we lost, and the only state game we have ever lost.
To be honest i hope you all at gate city keeps screwing over barry, cause maybe he will get tired of it and come back home to pv.
How is Barry being screwed over?
Not putting him in the defensive cord job. Coach Jones is a great coach that his players respect and will always go the extra mile to not let him down. Gc has been making a big mistake by wasting his knowledge and talent by not making him the d coach and asst. coach. It would change your progam entirely.
Darren Reed, when you talk to caoches in the area, is totally inept and incompetent as a defensive coordinator. The kids there hate him, and he is the reason why many are sitting in the stands and not playing. Reed will NEVER be offered th head job at GC. Houseright wouldn't take it even if Jim Scott and all the reptiles in the Scott Co. system apologized and repented for neglecting the job to the best coach to ever come out of Scott Co. Nick needs to go to Science Hill if they make him an offer. Not sure they will, but what else do they have to accept the job? Martin is the man to replace Colobro if he happens to leave GC. He's the reason for the last state championship.
im pretty sure that as of now Nick Jr is coaching golf and no longer on the staff. it will be sort of funny if this is all for nothing and coach is there another ten years...
Read my post, man. I never mentioned nick jr.
i didnt say you did. just stating something i heard as it relates to the events being discussed in this thread. didnt mean to confuse anyone.
Big Nick has his 30 years in as of Jan. 5. He can go to TN and be vested in heir retirement in 5 years. I suspect he's gone.
