Who are they? Those players that gave you the feeling that they would never lose? I can count mine on a hand, Thomas and Julius both gave me that feeling in High School, Jordan gave me that feeling, Juan Dixon at Maryland gave me that feeling, and from what I remember of Christian Laettner he gave off that feeling. What players gave you that feeling?
Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Tyson
Derek Jeter in the majors.
Kyle Macy in college basketball.
The Moore kid who played at Pound in highschool basketball.
Tom Brady as well in the NFL.
Mine are only in high school (football) since that's all I ever watch. I don't watch the NFL or even NCAA much.
But in High School..
- Julius Jones - Extremely good. The best I've ever seen.. grew up watching him at about 6-8 years old. Pretty much got me into football. Nothing more needs to be said. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
- Josh Mabe - Excellent and somewhat underrated quarterback; very good throwing and pretty consistent, even when throwing the ball deep. I'd say he's probably one of the main (local) quarterbacks that got me interested in the quarterbacking position (because of his super 'clean' looking throws and overall ability).
- Brad Robbins - Really strong arm, very good quarterback; didn't lose much and could make some big plays. Definitely one of the better QB's I've seen in my time. Easily the hardest-working QB I've seen. He wanted it more than anybody.
Those are pretty much the only three that I've ever really admired over the course of watching high school football.

Calvin Talford
Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and based on what I have seen in the NBA this year Gilbert Arenas, at the end of the game, nobody right now has more confidence than he does. And Adam Vinateri.
I was fortunate enough to go see Jordan, Pippin, and Rodman at the United Center in Chicago in 1998. Televison doesn't do them justice. Jordan is IMO what basketball is meant to be. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/getsmile.tmp007816300.gif[/img]
Joe Montana...I remember watching the playoff game in 1990 vs. the Giants when they were down by less than 7 and I thought for sure it was time for another Montana late game drive. I remember thinking that the only way it wasn't going to happen was if Montana got hurt...then Leonard Marshall came down on his elbow. Montana was never out of a game until Marshall put him out.
Jordan was like that too, but there was a time he had the same label as Marino and Manning, that they couldn't win the big game. Everyone forgets that now, looking back at his career, but Jordan couldn't beat the Pistons for 2 or 3 years in the playoffs.
Talford was a beast...I really hoped he would have been more heavily pursued than he was. He played for the Globetrotters for a while, and then I didn't hear anything else about him.
Larry Bird without a doubt is the first choice for me.
Michael Jordan was there, but being a Celtics fan, Bird goes a bit higher.
David Ortiz gives me that vibe now.

amen to this one brother, this was the ultimate "man among boys" athlete. i was a student at one of the rival high schools of talford's. when his team came to our gym or diamond, you knew it.
Unfortunately, Larry Bird always found a way at the end of a game to help the Celtics win- sometimes over the Showtime Lakers. Nothing was impossible with Michael Jordan on the court- no one still compares in my opinion.
Larry Bird was slow, but he made up for it in heart. Loved to watch him play. Michael Jordan was unbelievable.
I remember Silvers, he played for ETSU as well...I didn't know he went on to play for the Globetrotters, I thought it was Talford; my bad. Guess I got my wires crossed.
Didn't Calvin get drafted by the Phillies to play baseball as well? What is Calvin doing now?
And yes, Calvin did get drafted by the Phillies.. Some say that he would have done better if he had pursued baseball than he did in basketball.. But he played professional basketball overseas so he did pretty darn good for himself.. Last I heard he was driving a truck for Budweiser and living in Johnson City.. seriously..
Calvin Talford is still a great ball player....I play against him on a regular basis at the gym we go to in Johnson City.
Yes he was drafted back in 88 and if I am not mistaken still has the VHSL Highjump record
