Sports Eliminated

I know this is a sensitive subject but how many of you out there would like to see a sport eliminated from your high school? I know kids have different loves in sports but if you have not been successful in the sport in say........DECADES... wouldn't you like to see money funded for that program go to another program? Let's take for instance....baseball at Clintwood...just for a starter. I mean when was the last time we had a successful baseball program, district title or anything. Since they are a football school, those athletes can dedicate their time to running and staying in shape by getting on the track team. Also, since you do not have guys playing basketball all year around, this would be a perfect opportunity to teach the basics to a non-basketball talented team. Any outsider can coach them except the head and asst coach. Think about it.
How about other schools, any problems? I do not want to hear why a program should stay, you had your chance. Why should they go?

IMO there should be none at Norton taken away..... We compete in just about every sport that I can think of....

You know in some ways, this post ought be on the one about muzzling cheerleaders...IMO, cheerleaders need to be eliminated...they are like tribbles in Star Trek, they consume but return nothing especially during games...they have no musical ability and can barely follow the band (when there is a good one in the stands) in The Hey Song...My vote goes to getting rid of cheerleaders...

Just curious, is it "we" or "they"?

Wasn't that long ago that Clintwood had a decent team. Key in baseball is pitching, and you have to get someone who knows how to work with pitchers, and it can't just be a baseball season thing.

That all being said, it doesn't matter if a program is successful or not, its about providing an equal amount of programs and such, what is the proper term for that Title I or something? (I can't remember the exact listed reason but I'm sure someone can)

Unless you know a cheerleader or band member first hand you have no idea how hard they work. They put in as many hours as your athletes and get no glory for it. You should be applauding them instead of putting them down.

Cheerleaders do work hard...but their attitudes stink. Not all of them but some of them.

BTW, don't start defending band with me. I was in band and I know how hard we worked. Some football players and other athletes couldn't handle marching and keeping time. Some football players and I say SOME are lucky they know which snap count to move and block on...

PLEASE....... I would love to see some band members standing over the line of scrimmage with LB getting ready to put his stuff in the dirt and still manage to "keep time" and not [censored] on himself, not to mention try to read what type of coverage the secondary is running and make a split second decision on where to throw the ball....... But I am sure the halftime performance is much more pressure packed than that..... Keep dreamin pal

I know football is tough and demanding, don't preach it to me. It takes a special breed to be a band member, just like it takes a special breed to be a football player or any athlete in a program. cheerleading in places other than here is an "athletic" event but around here they do nothing except cheer and fix thier hair, but i take that back i saw kelly cheerleaders actually do some backflips a couple of years ago. around here them and the band are club members not athletes.

Both are demanding, both involve a lot of work and effort. Both involve work in the summer under the hot sun. Both involve precision, both require you to remember a lot (be it plays or actual notes in a song). In their competition, both can be singled out and embarassed by mistakes (a penalty or judges comments) and both can cost your team a victory.

I've known band members who played football, and football players who were in the band and heard ones from both sides talk about how easy (in some cases) the other was or how difficult (again in some cases) the other was.

Its like most anything, unless someone is involved, they don't realize the sacrifices involved or the difficulty.

There are some cheerleaders who are athletic. Kelly had some girls there a few years ago and I think one there now who is a part of Rainbow Gymnastics...they were good but some just stand around and play with their hair and primp...

Thanks Rocketer. It's good to know that someone else out there realizes sacrifices. I know some football players who have great respect for the dedication and determination it takes to do both. I know another kid at Kelly who has wrestled and been in band. I don't hear a lot of complaints about him being in a sissy program like band. In fact, some of the kids have respect for him being in band and wrestling too. It takes something called PRIDE.

Well I guess we'll just agree to disagree. I been to competitions, seen people march parades several miles in the midday sun, having to stay completely in step, keep their head, remember music, motions, routines, etc. Seen a judge at I think it was a competition in Pulaski that made an entire band stand at attention for 20+ minutes (and yes that attention like in the military, no movement, heads up, etc). I've seen football players not be able to stay still to have a snap count on 3. Music requires them practicing at home, you don't see too many football players studying their playbooks at the house.

They are different animals, but I can tell you this, as much as a lot of football players used to gripe about the band, now that there isn't one (at Clintwood), you'll hear a lot of them wishing there was, being impressed how much it pumps up other teams, etc.

No question that the physical punishment is different in football but thats like saying someone who runs miles isn't in as good of shape as someone who runs sprints or vice versa. They both have to be conditioned for their respective events or strengths.

I agree with that Rock, good points. I never said I didn't like our band or respect our band, I loved the band in High School, had several friends in the band. I guess I just know the time and preparation that I spent learning three different offenses as a QB in high school and having to know the playbook in and out and know where everybody on the field was supposed to be on every play, plus have to know all different defensive schemes and how to exploit them and I just don't see how the band could be that much more demanding, physically, emotionally, or mentally.

I have never been in the band so I can't speak for that but I do see your points. Like I said, I loved the band in High School and we would always request songs we wanted them to play and we appreciated them. Fightin Squirrel just jumped the gun and assumed I hated the band and didn't respect them just because I played football....

I think the original post mentioned FUNDING...if it's about the money then leave the cheerleaders alone because at most schools they don't see a dime. Take it from someone who has both cheered and coached cheerleading.

That is true. They see very little or none. Yeah, I slammed cheerleaders but I should have been a little more clear in my comments. Some are just there for looks and popularity...seriously.

In no way possible can you say that band camp is rougher, that's quite possibly the dumbest statement i have read on this forum (and i have read quite a few posts from chubz)

All my nuts are accounted for Seldom or do you go to football games? Norton has had football players in band and so has Powell Valley. Kelly won't let them be in both because it just doesn't look good in the eyes of the Indian Grand Pooh Bah...

Back again and I want to clear up some things. BAND IS NOT A SPORT! It is an art! Now even though they show some athletic moves on the sideline, cheerleading is not a sport! Competition cheerleading is a sport. In N.Va., a lot of girls compete on the cheerleading teams in competitions but they do not cheer on the sidelines because, and I quote, "there are too many girls on the sidelines and they are too ditzy!" All you coaches out there know that there is a difference between athletes and girls!
Now, I did not say that some cheerleaders were not athletic but on the sidelines, cheerleaders are not in a sport. Some of the guys that cheer (and should be on the football team my hairy knuckled self says) are just as strong as some of the linebackers on your high school teams and the girls are just as athletic as girls on a basketball team but it is not a sport until they compete against other schools.
Someone said that having a band gets you fired up. My friend if you are training since August, you look over across the field and you see someone that wants to rip your head off and you have to look in the stands and watch a band play to get fired up, you need to join the cheerleaders because that is what you are. A cheerleader!
In the four years I played I could not tell you one song the band played on the field but I do know they played the school song at pep ralleys. The bands work hard I guess sychronizing their moves, but being as athletic as a basketball, football, softball, volleyball player? Puuuhhhhhlllleeeeaaaassssss!!!!

Gotta go with you Roy. How can you even try and compare band camp to football camp and 3 a-days. Ok you have 4-5 people carrying 30-50 lb drums, try wearing your 50 lbs all over your body along with a helmet 5 lb helmet all of which just intensifies the heat. As soon as the band memebers start wearing full padding and run (not march/walk) around hitting one another with their instruments you will have the start of an argument.

Let me also say I am not just saying this a football player, I did join the band for a while in 8th grade and am doing my comparisons having experienced both.

Football teams exert more energy in stretching and agilities then they band exerts in a day.lol...there is no comparison...it's like comapring a competitive swimmer to a fat old guy doin the backfloat...yeah they're both in the water but that doesn't make them comparable...If we are gonna compare band to a sport, let's compare it to somethin other than FB...

Ok...I've got this great idea!...Maybe next year after FB season wraps up all the schools can have a grudematch game to benefit both the band and the FB programs. Dress the band out in a uni and let em go 20 mins with the football team!..lol...and after it's over all the football players can use the bands instruments to play taps for the fallen band members..if there's any band dudes left to teach the players taps...then the football teams can buy some new equipment or what not with their share of the proceeds...and hopefully the bands will have enough money to pay their hospital bills...uh, this one time at band camp...lol...i kill me

I think Schools can elect not to have teams in particular sports.

Council High School dropped football several years ago. It may be purely coincidental, but after they dropped football, they had a really good run in basketball for a few years.

It is a bit controversial to consider dropping a sport, but I've wondered why some schools in the LPD continue to compete in some sports, including basketball. If you don't have a genuine interest from the students, parents, coaches, and fans in a particular sport, then it's not likely you're going be competitive.
