officials
Is it just me or are the officials just terrible. I mean honestly how do you miss that many obvious calls. I was at the Gate City Rye Cove game last night and the refs called a foul against gate city every time rye cove put the ball on the floor it was insane. the only calls gate city got in the second half were make up calls. it was just a terrible job all around

Re: officials
...you won...who cares....

Re: officials
I just thinks the refs should call a decent game for once

Re: officials
There is the ask a ref board
http://www.hostboard.com/LDPforum/ub...&Board=REF
If you have specific questions about the calls in a game post them.
I did not see the game so I can not comment however I will say that the in GC games I watched this season I did not belive GC was called for enough fouls.
So it could be that the Refs just called a tighter game last night
-
Re: officials
It's not that i'm complaining about the fouls called against us I just want the game to be called both ways.
-
Re: officials
I think we all have done some complaining this year over calls I think the ref can do a better job and while I missed alot of games down the streach this year it did seem like the refs did step up there game a bit and call better games near the end of the season and strangly enough when that happened the ask a ref board seems to die LOL so I sort of wondered if it happened else where as well.
-
Re: officials
If the refs did their job I for one would be content.

Re: officials
I was there, Gate City can't complain about fouls, they played very aggressive defense, and just about tore Hood's jersey off several times, there is nothing wrong with that, It's what they had to do to win the game, stop Hood, you beat Rye Cove...Just don't expect to get zero fouls called while you got a saddle on Highest scorer in the western end of the state

Re: officials
Gate City is a team that does a lot of hand-checking. plain and simple. i for one am glad someone a ref is finially calling this. i mean for the pointguard to go up the floor and get dogged with hands flying into your stomach and hands hitting th pgs hand causeing him to miss handle the ball. its crazy. i am finally happy because this was called
-
Re: officials
It seems to me that the refs nowadays seem to want to be noticed more and like trying to dictate the outcome of the game, instead of just calling fouls that are obvious fouls and letting the kids play. Last nights game with GC and RC seemed to be alittle one sided. I think RC was in the bonus shooting 2 fouls early in the 3rd quarter which I believe GC had 10 fouls to RC's 1. The crowd started yelling constantly about this and then the make up calls started to be called to make it not so lopsided.
-
Re: officials
I have to agree about the refs. Grats to Gate City. I think the final total in the 4th quarter was Rye Cove 11 Gate City 10 on fouls. Or thats close. Another thing. Rye Cove how can you allow someone to dribble the ball the length of the court and score a layup in 4 secs? Anyway GOod luck to GC in the region and beyond. Great season to Hood, Shup, Detriot, Franklin, Anthony and the rest of the seniors if I missed one. Best of luck.
-
Re: officials
I really think it is ironic that GC is complaining about the refs. I know kids are taught you have to overcome bad refereeing, but ever since GC came back to the LPD, I would dare say 75% of the games called in the LPD both for boys and girls have been PRO Gate City!!!
-
Re: officials
To WarEaglePride..I thought it showed alot of class from both schools as both met at half court after the game and kneeled down and said prayed together. I thought it was a well fought game and Scott County was well represented. Good luch to Hood and Coach Mullins as they both went out with class....
-
Re: officials
Hey,
To those that are complaining. You got what you wanted. Altizer is in full control, Many of the officials that are out there to get noticed are in the Regions. Your coaches picked them! All the regions are is a thank you from the coaches to the refs that have sucked up to the coaches all year. Is very amusing that officals that were not picked to do the regions are picked to officate the state finals. Ever since they changed the format on picking officals for the regions the VHSL seems to think that the officals that are sitting at home during the regions are good enough to be picked for the state finals, but not good enough for the regions. I find that very ironic.
-
Re: officials
I find it funny that people get on here and gripe about the officals myself, If they call too many fouls people gripe, if they don't call enough fouls people complain. You have to deal with the hand you are dealt. Whatever that might mean, officals never lose a ball game for your team there are several plays during the course of the game that could get a win. And from personal experience, in my own judgement basketball is the hardest sport to officiate even with 3 refs. So the next time your team loses and you want to blame the refs just take a look back and see what you could have done better as a team to win that game. It's pretty simple.
As far as the gate city fouls go, i wasn't at the game, but i have watched them play a few times this year. They are very aggressive with the hands and defensive play in general, the refs probably didn't do that bad of a job they probably called what they saw since that is what you are supossed to do anyway. Referees will get together before a game and set standards if you will to determine what they will look for throughout the course of a game. Maybe hand checking was one of those things, since gate city is notorious for it. I think once you get further up the line (Regions, State) games should be called tighter it forces teams to play DEFENSE so maybe it wasn't a bad thing for them to get those fouls called, next time they can play better defense and it will more than likely help them up the road.
I am not in anyway on the officals side because i agree with most of them are pretty bad this year, but you just have to deal with it and go on. Lucky for Gate City they were able to move on.

Re: officials
Good post!
Funny you bring up a lot that is not ever mentioned. Other night I was doing a game and a coach was telling me how the officals cost him the game..... My response was " Oh Really". I said... Coach, how many foul shots did you miss in the 4th quarter? He said 4 why, I said, and how much did you get beat by? One was the answer. After a moment of uncomfortable silence he excused himself....
Yes there are bad officals that have no business officiating. But, to put the whole lump in a basket and call all of them bad is just plain wrong. Officals dont miss lay ups, foul shots, they dont foul players, they dont miss defensive or offensive assignments. The players do! Officals dont get out coached, call wrong offensive or defensive plays. There are times that officals would love to call a play since the coach is spending all of his time officaiting. The boys coach at JJ Kelly is the worlds worst. Its to the point that no offical wants to do his games because he acts like an idiot.
When I first got into officating. Coach Bently was at JJ Kelly. In my eyes and other officals eyes he was and is the best coach in SW. VA. After years of officiating his games I asked him why he always ran illegal screens? His response was, I run them till you all call them. Hey, that is smart coaching. He would tell me that he didnt want to see me doing his games b/c he knew I would call them. I took that as a compliment. So as for GC. The coach is doing what all great coaches do. He does things till its called.

Re: officials
Isnt your job as an official to call fouls fairly and the same all the time, regardless of how much somebody fouls?
No official will do that against Gate City because they all know they will be there all night. Gate City just has the advantage of being deep enough to foul until the officials get tired of calling it.
As for Coach McAmis, Bentley complained just as much from what I understand, he just wasnt as loud as Coach McAmis about it...Bentley had probably twice as many Technicals in his first few years as Coach McAmis has.
There is nothing wrong with voicing your opinion and sticking up for your team.
-
Re: officials
When Coach Bentley complained he was 99% of the time correct. TJ just complains and 99% of the time he is wrong. I wacked Bentley many of times. Just like TJ yelling 3 seconds... He doesnt have a clue about the rule.
I always called hand checking against GC early and it was stoppped by the 2nd quarter.
No there is nothing wrong about sticking up for your team, but bereting an offical b/c of the lack of talent or lack of coaching ability is no excuse to act like and idiot. He needs to focus on coaching his team and not the officals.
-
Re: officials
Valid point on calling Gate City on that too. When its called, they can adjust and will adjust, but they know that most don't want to call it all night.
-
Re: officials
How can someone not have a clue about 3 seconds? Doesn't 3 seconds just mean that someone has a foot or is in the lane for more than 3 seconds, and that time re-sets each time a shot goes up?
That is how I have always interpreted the rule. I'm sure TJ and most other coaches understand 3 seconds.
-
Re: officials
Depends on the Ref Some will not call it if both feet are not in the lane and some reset there count when someone from the crowd yells "3 seconds" He probably means that the coach does not understand how that particular official interprets the rule
-
Re: officials
Thats just it..... some coaches including TJ keep yelling 3 seconds after a shot. They dont understand the rule. I used to think he had a deep passion to win the game. Now I just think he is out of control. He bereted an offical one night and even went as far as telling the offical to look his kids in the eye and to explain to them why he was cheating them. To me that is unprofessional. He is supposed to set an example to the young men. With the attitude he displays, do you actually think he is setting a good example to the young men? I dont. He always blames the officals for his defeats. When is he ever gonna allow his team and hisself to be held accountable?
-
Re: officials
I have posted this before, calling three seconds is a chicken crap call. If a kid is moving around the lane, one foot in, one foot out but still moving and not CAMPING or standing there with the ball, I will not call it. NEVER! I hear people scream "3 seconds" even though shots are being made on goal. You can stay in that lane until the cows as long as there are shots being took on goal.

Re: officials
As far as hand checks and playing more physical ball, that's what you get when you play teams from other Regions, especially after you advance past region D. IMO that causes "culture shock" for our teams who are used to having some of the officials calling too tight. It's hard to adjust but the other team is used to it because this is how they've played all year. I think for the most part we have some pretty good officials. Some aren't as good. And I think some may even show some biases. But if you're going to call it tight or let them play do it from the get go and be consistent throughout the game and call it even between the teams. I know some calls will be missed but in a good called game it usually evens out.
-
Re: officials
i gotta agree. ive seen several final fours and some of them were called about as lax as a playground game. anybody planning on winning up state better be ready to be harrassed with hand checking and all around aggressive play.
-
Re: officials
The girls are not exempt from this "lax" calling either. I remember Gate City's Brittany Rogers having a black eye last year in the finals action. Those girls games were some of the roughest I have ever seen.
-
Re: officials
You mean they finally called all those hand checks on Gate City? My God, I wish I'd went to have seen that, I didn't think it was possible for refs to actually call those fouls.
-
Re: officials
Gate city does play agressive defense but that's no excuse. I can remember a moment in the lpd championship game where Cody Salyer rebounded the ball under our goal and was mobbed basically by three Burton defenders. I also don't think refs understand the meaning of a walk. I mean if a player has the ball on the ground and he's rolling around it's a walk. I also say a ref allow burton to call a timeout while the ball was loose i mean ir's pathetic.
-
Re: officials
GC gets away with murder every game they play, two hands on a mans back is a foul. The refs here dont call it so they get away with it, when they go to state they call it and they lose. I remember when TS beat GC in the Regional Final a few years back when good ole Chucky Starnes called those fouls on GC and this place went nuts.
-
Re: officials
If I am not mistaken you CAN put a hand or both on the player with the ball so long as you do not hold push (I do belive that GC does hold and push ALOT until they get a few fouls called then they seem to back off still playing pressure but within the rules)
I think everyone would just like to see more consistantcy in seeing that call made
-
Re: officials
They foul every possession, two hands on the back pushing/holding. They get away with it so I cant blame them, I think it's sad the refs around here let Scotty V make the calls for them.
-
Re: officials
Weel said Counts - I think GC does hand check more than most and I think they see whats gonna be allowed and adjust from there - nothing wrong with seeing what you can and cant get away with from game to game. Absolutely no different than a pitcher seeing what the umpire is gonna give him and what he's not gonna get that day.
-
Re: officials
Yea, I dont blame them at all. Other coaches when they play them should play the same way and soon as they called a hand check on their team pull a Bob Knight/Stan Wilson might put a stop to some of this.

-
Re: officials
I am starting to wonder why more team do not play more of that type of game since it is rare that this area has a big guy that can score from the paint and hurt you lessening the effectiveness of the zone (i am not Basketball expert so there is probably a good reason I just don't know about )
-
Re: officials
Truth hurts, GC by far the best team in the LPD but that defense is foul happy.
-
Re: officials
2 hands is automatic hand check foul. forearm on the torso is automatic. Leaving a hand on is automatic. Bacically if you impede the ball handler in anyway with those I mentioned above is to be called a handcheck. But the officals that do call it are not rewarded by the coaches for calling the game as the book say too. But as long as coaches are voting who works the region that is the type of calls or lack of calls you are gonna get.
-
Re: officials
Exactly, let Scotty V tell the refs what to do and the Blue Devils will put the hand check on you.
-
Re: officials
That's right. Like I've said before there needs to be a better way of evaluating and rewarding officials. I do not think that coaches should have any say. How are you suppose to call a game fairly and impress a coach at the same time?
