J.I.B. VS. GATE CITY

RAIDERS improve to 1-1 in the district and 4-1 overall with a 5-1 win over the devils.Pat Begley pitched a 6 hit,2 walk,6k,complete game to improve to 3-0 on the season.Ethan Stewart went 3for4 with 3rbi's,Pat Begley and Skylar Peters added a rbi apiece.Martinez Miles and Doug Jacobs got a cople of hits also.Stewart also threw out two runners attempting to steal 2nd.Peters made 4 putouts at 3rd.Will Hamilton had a hit and 2 putouts from his 2ndbase position.The Blue Devils drop to 0-2 in the district.The RAIDERS continue play tuesday against the Kelly Indians 2-3 overall and 2-0 in district play..

they couldn't hit or field worth a crap and came out not ready to play while coeburn did and coeburn jsut put it to them

J. I. Burton came up with big hits at opportune times and Gate City did not. That was the difference in the game as the Raiders (4-1, 1-1), defeated the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-2), 5-1 in a Lonesome Pine District game at Hunter Wright Stadium Friday evening.

Gate City loaded the bases in the first innng with only one out and had the heart of the batting order up, but could not score.

"We've got to change our mental approach. We're leaving too many runners on base," said Gate City coach Shannon Carter, "When Burton got an opportunity, they scored. We are also missing signs, but we will get better. Our defense improved tonight."

Burton took the lead in the third inning when second baseman Will Hamilton singled to left field, stole second and center fielder Jay Coleman bunted for a base hit and stole second. Catcher Ethan Stewart drove both runners home with a shot to left center.

"We can compete with anyone in the District, if our pitching holds up," said Stewart. "We are a good hitting team."

Winning pitcher Pat Begley drove Stewart across with the Raiders' third run in the sixth with a single.

"I felt good out there tonight. This is a fine place to play baseball," said Stewart. "We've got good athletes on this team that have a lot of speed. We have high expectations for the season."

Gate City finally got a run in the sixth inning as right fielder Joseph Riner reached on an error and left fielder Ked Byrd drove the only Blue Devil run home with a single down the right field line with two out.

Stewart led the Raiders at the plate going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. Stewart also gunned down two Gate City runners attempting to steal second base. Jay Coleman and Will Hamilton had two hits each for Burton.

"I thought we played well, pitched well and played good defense," said Burton coach Mack Shupe. "We got some big hits from the botton of our lineup and Skyler Peters made some fine plays at third base. Baseball is alive and well in Norton. We've got kids with a lot of baseball knowledge. Gate City always gives us a tough time. They are real competitive and well coached."

Gate City had seven players, Buck Eldridge, Cody Salyer, Jordan Estep, Joseph Riner, Trey Clark, Luke Kirk, and Ked Byrd, all with one hit apiece.

All right there wyattyap, we all know that your son plays for Norton but you also got to realize this is Norton baseball, I don't give a [censored] who is coaching. You are not born to play baseball at Norton, that is Wise. You are born to play either Basketball or Football at Norton. How many winning seasons have we had in baseball in the past 20 years. I bet I can count them on one hand so don't get too cocky about this baseball season. I hope they do well but I don't expect them to win state.

I also remember the only winning season we had when I played baseball we started 6-0 against non-conference and then ended up 12-11 on the season.

my junior year we was playing norton, and Coach Austin gave Shupe a plaque during the pregame ceremonys congratuatling him on getting win no 500 earlier that week. as soon as the national anthem was over he walked in laid the plaque down and said we should give them one for letting us beat them the past 50 times now lets get out of here in 5.

It was a wee bit harsh (I have no clue who they are so no idea if thats based on fact or just a general insult) but even harsh, Cane's didn't have to be edited.

I'd dare say that its a bit of frustration, the same kind I stop myself from doing most of the time (not all mind you) when people who post 10 times a year come on and rip into people who post near daily.

Norton/Wise should be a good matchup. What's the old saying though, if you can give it, you best be able to take it. It appears that wasn't the case.

May have been a little much, but just like Rock said--after recent events in the past few weeks, I'm admittedly touchy. I've been told by SEVERAL how this board has went down the drain, and I'm tired of hearing that.

Yeah Kelly wins...Burton has athletes and really great ones....but Kelly has Baseball Players...and that will give them a win.

JIB has some good athletes in football, everyone knows that. Maybe they are the same ones playing baseball right now I don't know. But you are being arrogant when you try and say we beat everyone in football so watch out we are going to do the same in baseball just because of what athletes we have.

You got a reality check coming when you face Wise with that attitude. I would bet they will show you who they are and what they got. What they got is one of the best group of athletes in baseball, followed by one of the best in the state pitching (Cody Bently). That is just the truth like it or not. Sounds like you have a BIG EGO because of football, kinda immature if you ask me.

Not sure that Bentley is even the best arm on the staff. Wilson and Sturgill are solid. Even Dotson can throw a little.

I've seen them all pitch and IMO Bently is the best around in the LPD.

Welp regardless, it's a nice argument to have. You can never have enough pitching.

cody is without a doubt the hardest throwing one out of the 3 but imo wilson is better jsut because his off speed stuff is a whole lot better then bentley's
but all 3 are great pitchers

Me and Ronnie Turner were talking at the PV game, and we were saying that its been awhile since I have seen a curveball like Sturgill's. As that youngin' matures, that badboy is gonna be hellish for the opposition. Bentley does throw harder though, no doubt.

The short-stop that you guys have...I think 46 this year...1 last year...can freaking throw wow...hes manly all around.

What I would like to know is why cant one team razz another team for the fun of it with out some one getting mad and saying you are too cocky you shouldnt make posts like that! I have a slew of friends from Norton, as well as know alot of those kids on the Burton squad. Yes, we and the Raiders are bitter rivals, and I sincerely hope we pound them in 5 Tuesday (the same as they hope), but the kids seem to be able to get along better than the adults sadly. I'm not going to sit around and fret whether anybody on this board likes what I do for a living or not. Public criticism comes with the job, but I am going to be decent enough to respect the fact that, like me, others on here work for a living, and you'll not see me take a popshot at their profession.
