Gate City coach confronts Scott School Board
GATE CITY - Last month, the Scott County School Board terminated Hugh Godsey's contract as softball coach at Gate City High School. A few weeks ago, Godsey learned he would not be recommended to return as girls basketball coach.
Godsey said he went to Tuesday night's school board meeting seeking answers from board members and Superintendent Jim Scott, and came away empty-handed.
"If I thought for one second I'd done anything wrong, I'm man enough to accept my punishment and go. But I've not done anything wrong. I just can't accept what they've done," Godsey said after the meeting. "It's just not right. To me it's an issue of right versus wrong."
Godsey, who has won two state titles in softball and one in basketball, said he was informed of the decision regarding basketball April 13 by Nick Colobro, Gate City High's football coach and athletic director.
Godsey said a principal from Weber City Elementary, where Godsey teaches, was present.
"There was no documentation. It was just a conversation," Godsey said. "He just indicated that I would not be considered for any coaching positions in the next year.
"I asked him why, and he said if I had any questions I need to call the Central Office, which indicates to me that it's coming from over there. Then when (parents) call over there, (the Central Office) says that the principals give the recommendation."
Contacted at home Tuesday night, Colobro declined to comment, saying questions should be addressed to Scott or one of the school board members.
In March, the board met in a closed session before voting to terminate Godsey as softball coach. Insubordination was cited as the cause.
Prior to the closed meeting, supporters spoke on Godsey's behalf for more than an hour. Tuesday's meeting transpired far differently.
David Kindle, who replaced Beth Blair as vice chairman at the beginning of the meeting, asked the group of Godsey supporters to pick one speaker, who would have a maximum of five minutes to speak and could not pose questions directly to Scott or any individual board members.
Godsey ended up speaking on his own behalf, and cited a March 23 meeting with Scott. Godsey's assistant coach also attended the meeting.
"It's been in the papers that I was supposedly told to do something," Godsey told the board. "In our last meeting, and there was a witness there besides myself, so that can be confirmed, he indicated to me - first that "?I should've known what he meant.' My question there is, which was it? You told me to do something, or you didn't tell me and I should've known what you meant to tell me. That's pretty vague if you ask me."
Scott, who would not comment on Godsey's remarks to the board, said the contracts for coaches are renewed on a yearly basis. The vote on softball was necessary because it required voiding a previously approved contract.
Principals from the three high schools will hand in lists of recommendations on June 1.
The school board can either accept those recommendations, make changes or ask they be sent back and re-examined by the school administration.
Scott said any notification Godsey had received on basketball "would have to come from the school people. I wouldn't really know until I see their list in June."
Reached at home Tuesday night, Gate City High Principal Mike Brickey said he and Colobro meet to discuss coaching retentions every year. Colobro hands out a form to incumbent coaches in January or February asking if they wish to return and whom they request as assistants.
"Hugh has said he wanted to return as a coach," Brickey acknowledged.
Brickey would not discuss specifics of the Godsey situation.
"There's no reason that I can give. It's a personnel matter. Most personnel matters come from the superintendent."
Brickey said he had not handed in the official list but thought Scott had received a tentative list from Colobro.
"Coach (Colobro) took one over this week, I think so," Brickey said.
Godsey said he "probably" would return to teach in Scott County rather than take a coaching position elsewhere.
"I've had those opportunities in the past and passed on them," he said. "This is where my heart is."
Legal action in the matter also may be an option.
"Right now, that's a definite possibility," Godsey said. "I will say we're not done with it. They know that. They should know that by now."
Scott hopes to name full-time replacements - along with all coaches in Scott County - at the June meeting.
Possible candidates to replace Godsey could not be named to coach until they have been hired by Scott County Schools to teach.
Amy Bledsoe currently serves as the interim softball coach.
I've stood up for godsey from the beggining but right now it seems as though all parties involved are trying to skip around something and no one wants to be the one to give it away. Guys, if something comes up, I sincerely appologize to everyone on the board for my earlier posts on the situation
I've said from day one, there has to be more to this story.....I think he is gonna push and push until they are forced to go public with whatever it is...You have to think that the school board has heard of lawsuits before, and would have never done this without solid reasons.....He might as well tuck tail and run, you can't win them all, and he looks worse and worse the more he talks

I think you are right on this one.
go coach godsey. fight the power
why should he tuck tail and run??? I think if Coach Godsey had anything to truly hide he wouldn't be pursuing this so much...I think when all is said and done you will find the School Board really has nothing, and that being said they will never go forward because there is nothing to go forward with. Before this is over though all of those who have complained to the school board will have to come forward so let's just wait until then to decide if Godsey really has some skeletons in his closet...I think if anyone understood the working of Scott County they would know that the powers that be do what they want when they want with or without reason and up until now no one has questioned that...
So, since you are from NoVa, how are you getting all your info on SCSB and etc. concerning the matter.
maybe I shouldn't have said i'm from NoVa though I wish I was...I am a GC grad, but NoVa is home now...so yes I know all too well how it goes...
He didn't do anything. The entire ordeal has been talked about on this board for a couple of months. He was asked to do something and he didn't do it. End of story. There's "nothing more to it". Like I said, it's been talked about on here over and over.
Quincy - you are exactly right - he didnt do anything. He didnt do anything when he was asked repeatedly to do so by a superior and when he refused to he lost his job. End of story. He and everyone else needs to get on with their life and put this issue to bed.
Yeah it does, but you know, sometimes people are too close to things to allow that to happen.

To good for the south west Virginia? This is the greatest place on earth IMO, not just Gate City. Anywhere in the general area.
It's stuff like this Godsey situation that makes me glad to be gone from there. I mean is it right for people to be afraid to stand up for him for fear of losing their job? It's not right...And in response to those of you who said he did nothing, you're right he didn't because it's not his JOB to police the school. That falls in the hands of the principals and school board. And i've seen on these boards where people are saying that there's a restraining order out against the assistant involved, well that's FALSE, there is no restraining order just a letter recieved from the school saying he couldn't be on school property, which by the way without a solid reason they cannot enforce. I believe and I may be wrong that Mr. Johnson is in the process of fighting that order anyway. Because, well it's not legal. And might I add that several times this year Godsey spoke with both Colobro and Brickey and they said as far as they knew he was doing everything he was asked...so try again

Did Godsey tell you this himself? If not it is hear say.
No actually i'm pretty sure it was published in a newspaper...actually a couple of them...but it was Godsey's statement to the press that included all of this information...
I think you're closer to this Godsey situation than what you lead us to believe. Just because you're currently in NOVA doesn't mean you don't have a close connection back down here.
Just my opinion.

Oh.. Okay you are probably right about this... I really do not keep up with it... only when it is on TV or something. I wish him luck... remeber this if he is innocent then he will be vindicated... in time. THe same though if he is guilty.
You are exactly right! The truth will come out eventually...
Maybe there is more to this story than what has been said so far. Maybe its possible that he was let go for other reasons....... One might be that the girls programs are taking money from the boys programs....

Come on now that is a low blow to suggest that the football program is mad..
In the last couple of years.... Which programs have have had to use the most money out of the budget at Gate City? Im just saying that politics might be involved here. Maybe Godsey was asking for more money for the softball program, new lights, a decent press box, etc.... He might have mentioned title IV and the rest is history...... Before you scoff at this.... Think about it.....
omg...girls sports have always used the guys money...there are only 3 self-reliant sports at GC...football, boys basketball and volleyball...that's how it has always been, the other sports, boys sports included take money from the pot that those 3 sports create...so no, no one got fired for taking any money....jesus christ
and youre probably thinking of Title IX
who said anything about him taking money? I never mentioned that. I said that it was and is taking funds away from the programs that have been dominate in the past. When was the last time the football team made at a trip up the road. Maybe you should look into title IX before you blow a gasket next time. Its a touchy subject and its not the first time a coach has been let go because the issue had been raised. Maybe he wanted to upgrade the softball field and mentioned title IX. Judging from the actions of that school board and their ignorance, I wouldn't put it past them to can him for him for raising the title IX issue.

That is a good assumption.. I must agree.. but I do not think it is that... the football coach and the former softball coach have a pretty good relationship... trust me this decision was delivered from the head person.. I grant you that.. because if not they will face some major repurrcutions.

Let me clear something up here... In most schools the football pragram carries the other sports.. v=because it makes the most money... but think about it it takes more money to operate a football program because the stuff is a lot more expensive. But the football program does not disperse the money. It is given as there is a need. Do I think that the Gate City softball team deserves a better field and lights? Yes I do.. they have an outstanding program... just because it does not draw the crowds that football does does not mean anything. Trust me if the program is good.. it will get what it needs... if it is not it will struggle. It is sad but it is true.
If you arrive at a GC softball game and dont see a whole lot of people there...just look up on the hill at the church or in the Credit Union parking lot!!!!! It has been like that for years now..just image if those people up there over the years had come down and paid to get in, it might have made a difference...sorry!! Just as everybody on here says its my opinion...There is no way I would sit on a hill far away and not be down there helping cheer the girls on....and yes it is parents sitting on the hill..I have watched them for a few years now.

Well... I would rather be inside watching the game also... but some people are either to cheap or just like sitting at the church watching the ballgame. I understand your concern about this I think... But everything will work its self out... remember people are different in a lot of ways... but what must first be weighed is their motive for not paying to get in.. and we do not know that for sure.

It'll help when/if the new softball/baseball complex is built. I haven't heard a word about that in awhile though.

What are they waiting on? It should have been up years ago
You honestly think they are gonna pay the money to build a new softball field??? I don't think so. The softball team had has offers of donations for them to put up lights and Colobro wouldn't let them. (Even though according to law that is illegal) But you mark my words i'd bet the girls don't even play at that field next year, they're gonna get moved down to the little league field now that Godsey isn't there to stand up for them, because the football team has been trying to do it for years now. And that softball field will be a full time football practice field...

Well lets jsut wait and see... If this happens then I will believe some more stuff that has been posted... it is not up to the athletic dirictor/asssitant Principal to decide whether or not the light go up.
Let me sum it up it just a few words.........SCOTT COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD and SCOTT COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS......

If the majority of Scott COunty feels that way then just remember not to vote for them come election time
I have a feeling...we may see a difference come NOV...Even if they dont have anyone running against them..I dont think you will see the number of votes they normally get. I heard about Coach G about 6 weeks before it happened, and it came from a School Board member now you tell me what right did he having talking to the public about a personnel matter.
