Has anyone heard anything about a PV football player getting caught prom night with Mary Jane and a DUI? I heard this was his 2nd drug offense in the past 2 or 3 weeks. I am not posting any names not sure if it is even true.

i have no idea, but this is not a good topic.
Heard from several people this is true.
I would really take biggin's advice and stay away from this topic. High school atheletes and drug use are "taboo" on this forum
its just classless, is what it is.
why divulge this kids' personal business on here??

I do agree that unless it is in the papers (and it will not be given that if an arrest is made the kid is a minor) I say we steer clear of speculation.
That being said anyone who thinks drug use is not a big problem in all of our schools is liveing under a rock IMHO we need to find a way to help these kids stay Drug free.
I think that Random Drug testing would be a great start (Not saying to throw the kids that are caught useing under the bus but try to get them some help)
Well, even a kid arrested will/could be in the papers (they just aren't able to give names).
So thusly, no names better be given or even hinted at.
Sorry I don't live up to your expected standards. This is not personal business if it is happening on streets and in the school my kids attend. I did not name anyone and had no intentions of it but I am interested in what is going on in my community and at the schools my kids attend. We do have drug problems in this county and it is in the schools, if someone is repeatedly violating the laws something should be done. If you think it is classless then don't participate in the conversation.
No one will particiapte in this convo. cuz it is classless...if you are going to speculate about particular HS students and drugs, you'll be posting to yourself.
For your info, the drug problem is all throughout SWVA and SEKY, not just in our schools...

I argree lets talk about what we can do to fight it IMHO Drug Testing while not the end all answer is an excelent place to start
I agree that random drug testing in the schools is a place to start.
I agree drug testing would be a great place to start. You also need admins that will enforce punishment as needed. The testing would be useless if there were no corrective actions taken. I am not saying students should be immediately removed from school, counseling and other corrective measures should be first taken.
It was mentioned in a committee meeting, for things to be addressed to better our schools, recently that one school was given a 2 day notice when the drug dogs were coming for searches. That is not working to make the situation better.
wah wah wha
Testing is a tricky issue in that you CAN NOT test the entire student body however you can test anyone involved in extra curricular activity (Sports, Band ect.)
This leads some that may need help that play a sport or in the band to give up there past time since there usage would come out otherwise. While this is not idea since these kids will not get any help and will lose an influence that could possibly be a great alternative, it does serve the purpose of taking there influence away from non users or users that have made the dission to quit in order to continue there activity.
IMHO the biggest benefit to the Drug testing IS that it gives the kids that are on the fence that may be greatly influenced by peer pressure an easy out (I would but I might get tested Monday)
Now after a kid fails a test there HAS to be some type of counseling (it can't all be about sitting out games or being kicked off a team) or the whole thing is pointless
That is my opinion on the subject
Counts, do you remember what the Dickenson County policy is? I agree with most of what you say. You'll have some not play because of fear of being caught, and you're absolutely right, that it gives kids an easy out, if they choose to use it.
I'm still of the mind one great solution to the drug problem (and this isn't sports related but since this topic is veering in/out of that), is anybody who gets benefits (disability, welfare, etc) is subject to being random tested as well. If a person fails a drug test, they don't lose their benefits then and there, but they are assigned to a case worker, have to undergo counseling etc. If they refuse, they lose whatever rights they had for a minimum of 1 year no matter if they turn around next week and want to be tested. If a person fails a second time, while undergoing counseling, rehab, whatever the case is. They then lose all their benefits for a year minimum or until they successfuly pass 3-4 random tests in a row.
No I do not remember it is something like
A percentage of kids in the programs are tested each week at Random (However if a Coach/Teacher/Parent suspect anything they can request a test)
1st positive 2 weeks off the team + Counceling + Tested every week
2nd positive miss the rest of that season (if it is a different sport/activity then 2 weeks) + Counceling + Tested every week
3rd positive No extra curriculer activity for the rest of the school year + Counceling
I am SURE that what I have posted above is NOT 100% correct but it is something like that.
I think testing people on disability or welfare is a great Idea but I am not so sure what the unexpected reprocussions of that type of program might be
Thats about what I was thinking it was.
Not sure about the unexpected issues with that would be either, guess thats why they are unexpected
Are teachers and faculty tested?
That would actually be the place to start. Then the students. Always start at the top when incorporating a controversial and invasive act / rule.
teachers do not get test...but they should be
Do not think so (bus drivers are I think)
IMHO Teaching is a profesion in which there probably should be drug testing (not saying that teachers are a bunch of druggies but 1 could do ALOT of damage)
By testing teachers and faculty first you also defuse many of the complaints that might arise from students and parents ahead of time.
Testing faculty and admistration could prove interesting. Bus Drivers are tested at the time of their physical at the beginning of the school year and are also subject to random testing. Have known a couple that lost their jobs.
While everybody is able to be educated (something along those lines is the reason you can't test students), a teaching job is like any other job, and that can have testing applied to it.
Shouldn't be a problem.
To teach in NC, you DO have to submit to a drug test. I know of one county that also gives a breathalyzer to you as soon as you walk into the office where the test is administered! I know of a few teachers that may get into trouble if this is put into effect in VA!
i'll vote for it
I would, too!
It would be easier to implement any form of student and/or athlete testing if all faculty were to be tested as well. As far as students in general being tested couldn't you (and I know this may be a reach but for example) test any student that attends a ballgame, school concert, goes on a field trip, goes on a trip with a school club, etc. as this could be viewed as participating in activities. I also think it is correct to assume that some would not participate so they would not be subject to the testing, but I think that would be the exception.
I think testing for <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">any student that attends a ballgame, school concert, goes on a field trip, goes on a trip with a school club, etc. </div></div> could be done with the exception of attending ballgames since the general public is also there and it would be VERY tough to cull out only students at your school
Yet another nameless poster who gets on here talking about high schoolers. Go pat yourself on the back buddy.
I personally dont see anything wrong with the post. the poster didnt mention any names, and from what I read didnt intend on doing so. I think ppl are jumping the gun just a little by bashing the poster on this.
absolutley not.
no other school EVER has anything like this posted on here.
its always powell valley.
its ridiculous that GROWN ASS PEOPLE get on here and ask about teenagers ordeals when they have NO BUSINESS KNOWING IN THE FIRST [censored] PLACE.
Agreed. As long as no names were mentioned, I do not see a problem with it. Being a parent of a student at PVHS, it helps to be informed of such things that other students are into. You may say that's none of my business since that occurred off school grounds, but the person was still a student there and I want to know what kind of people my son may have interactions with. I'm sure other parents would feel exactly the same way. And it may seem like people are constantly downing PV, but if this had happened at any other school, I'm sure this post would still have been made.
This is my one and only post on this topic. If this had been any other school, would the same stuff be posted on here about them? Maybe, maybe not. But the one thing I have learned is that instead of talking about what someone (a child) has done, why don't we as adults step up and see what we can do to help prevent the rampant drug use in our community?
I understand some people being upset, because if I recall correctly, they have admitted being friends with players, and that can make it a tough line.
Be upset at the kids who mess up and not the people who dare discuss it (vaguely and without names).
I mentioned this the other day, and our protective communities is a big reason that we have the drug problems we have around here. Everybody is somebodys friend. Everybody knows them, their daddy, their family, etc. They know they are good people, etc.
You know what, when I was growing up, my dad knew everybody in it seemed like a 10 state area. If I messed up or did something stupid, he knew it before I got home. He had told people if you ever see him messing up, tell me. I made the mistake of speeding going to Norton once, and when I walked in the door, he was asking me why I was going so far up Norton. And make no mistake, and I know a lot of you don't know him, my dad sure didn't keep it quiet. Good, bad or ugly, everybody knew anything/everything about me. Did it stop me from misbehaving or doing stupid stuff? You bet it did. Even if I didn't get in trouble legally, I knew or felt like I'd be in trouble anyways.
Now again, we don't want kids names on here, and I sure as heck don't wanna throw any kids under a bus, but I also don't think we can constantly sit here and say hush up and pretend it doesn't happen. How many good kids do we have to lose because we want to protect them, nobody wants to get them in trouble, and then they either end up dead by drugs/alcohol? How many great people have we lost, and by lost I don't mean dead, I mean just turn into for lack of a better word 'scum'. I mean I'm sick of it and instead of trying your best to make sure that nobody dares discuss it and that someone might be the slightest bit embarassed, jump the people who have golden opportunities, second chances, etc and mess up again.

We can't because even the vague discussion of drugs turns into a rant how about adults shouldn't be discussing it.
One point that I didn't mention
Ok, we're informed that it was a player from PV. Thats as much description as we need. Nobody needs to provide anymore information.
To pretend that this only happens at PV is a joke though.
Someone asked why don't we discuss adults and all. Well we did, to a point, mentioning how it would be good if teachers and all were tested.
I guess one point to me is, I don't care as much if an adult screws up. I dont consider that as much of a waste, or as much of a thing to be upset and/or sad about. Adults know the repercussions (sp), quite often kids don't.
A truthful dialog.
I know that kids grow up, kids drink, kids make mistakes, but how do we stop making it such a common occurance.
Parenting starts at home. Rock you were raised knowing right from wrong. Most of todays kids that get into trouble come from homes that their parents have no discipline, and they perform 'wrongs' in front of their kids all the time. So when todays teens get out in the world, everything that goes on in their home is OK !!
I don't see anything wrong with the post. Had he mentioned a name then I'd understand the problem. I don't agree with minor's names being mentioned when somethin like this happens, especially on an internet forum. Unfortunately, when football season rolls around, if it was a well known player ( and I have no idea who and don't wanna know) then it'll be public knowledge. That's just the way things are. Not saying it's right, but that's how life works.
why should older people, who have no connection to the previous mention, think its okay to discuss a younger persons mistakes on an internet forum?
its not hush hush because of drugs, its hush hush because its none, NONE, of your business.
