Cane fans, this is what youve been waiting for

Robert Marve has a full-time job.

The Hurricane quarterback signee is working out and studying the UM playbook anywhere from five to seven hours a day.


He's even forcing his high school coach, Robert Weiner, to quiz him on different plays.

One recent evening Marve waited patiently as Weiner finished up his team's high school spring practice session. At 8:30 p.m. Weiner arrived in his office.

The two sat down and went over Hurricane plays together for more than an hour.

"I'm definitely learning, am trying to get a head's up on it," Marve said. "Miami's playbook is a college version of my playbook. Our playbook is a lot greater than a regular high school playbook -- we do a lot of audibles, so I'm used to that. But I have to get used to more audibles, more protections, and translating the language from what I know to what I need to know for Miami."

Weiner says, "I quiz him, and Robert's been able to go through and understands every formation."

The ultimate goal is for Marve to know the playbook so well by the time he arrives at Miami that he will make a seamless transition.

And, Marve hopes, get immediate playing time.

UM offensive coordinator Patrick Nix has already said that Marve will get a shot to compete with Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman for the starting job in the fall.

And Nix has gotten used to fielding Marve phone calls at all hours of the night.

"If I have any questions I call him," Marve said. "He answers my questions.

"He says the best player's going to play. Kyle and Kirby are both great quarterbacks, so whatever I can do for the program I'll do. If I need to redshirt, I'll redshirt. If they need me I'll be ready."

Marve is coming off a record-breaking senior season at Tampa (Fla.) Plant High School in which he had 4,372 passing yards and 48 touchdowns. He was intercepted 13 times.

His coach watched in amazement throughout Marve's career as he grow from a freshman and sophomore that struggled (he threw only seven touchdowns as a sophomore) into a star.

The secret to Marve's success?

"I've never been around a player in any sport who has more of a command of exactly what we're trying to do than he did," Weiner said. "And he kept wanting more. We got to the point that I couldn't feed him more because the rest of our team couldn't keep up with it."

It's rare for a true freshman quarterback to play college ball simply because the mental load is too great.

To expect a high school player to be able to pick up the nuances of a college offense is somewhat farfetched.

But Weiner says if any incoming college player can do it, it's Marve.

"If what Marve has done so far is any indication of how he'll continue to develop, I don't think he'll have a problem," Weiner said. "It's absolutely positively a strength of Robert's. He's already taken great strides, as many as he possibly can, to learn everything about Miami's offense. There's no substitute for experience. You have to go out and do that. But to get the terminology to spill out of his mouth is real important, and he's done a significant amount of studying for that already.

"At our high school what we run is fairly complicated. As Robert grew and developed I gave him more and more. And I explain it this way: What I asked him to do I never have and never will again ask a quarterback to do in terms of him truly understanding high school defenses. In the playoffs defenses weren't high school defenses -- we were seeing zone blitzes, safety blitzes and things like that. What Robert does amazingly, and you have to do it in about five seconds, is he'll diagnose exactly what the defense is doing and the threats, will know the play we have called and what the best possible avenue is to attack that defense with this play. Or, and this is what makes Robert great, he has such a great catalog of our plays in his mind that he knows six or seven plays that he can check to if it's better.

"Miami does it a little different, doesn't have checks, has sight recognition between the quarterback and receiver, which is a simpler way to do it. Of course defenses he'll be seeing are much more complex than what he saw in high school, but the process of doing that will somewhat be easier for him because of what was put on his shoulders already as a high school player. In the end he is a player with tremendous physical talent, is a fierce competitor, but most of all his strength is his intelligence. He's the smartest player I've coached."

In addition to learning UM's playbook, Marve is also concentrating on getting faster and stronger.

He's certainly on the right track.

He's working with a trainer, and his body fat is down to 5.4 percent from last fall's 13 percent. He's added 19 pounds of muscle, recently weighing in at 204 pounds.

His 40 time, recorded three times consecutively at his gym recently, was 4.55, 4.56 and 4.57 seconds.

It was a 4.65 during last season.

"His physical shape right now, he's a completely different human being than at the end of our football season," Weiner said. "His footwork, I've never seen a high school player's footwork as incredible as his is right now. I do drops with him and let him go through his footwork. I think, to be honest -- we had Miami coaches up here to visit the other day to do their spring recruiting. They've seen film and recruited Robert, but I think even Miami doesn't know what they're getting."

One thing UM does know it's getting: A tireless worker.

Marve is one of those kids who won't leave the football offices until late at night, and he'll be back there early in the morning.

"Right now I'm working out three hours a day just doing footwork and throwing with the [college] Nike ball," Marve said. "And I try to get an hour-and-a-half in the playbook. Some days I get more hours in.

"I'm concentrating on my diet, conditioning, how many carbs and proteins I take in a day, and I'm running."

Those hours are in addition to his school, and the hours will go up after he graduates.

The hard work is all for one purpose: To be ready.

"I haven't played down there, but I'm trying to get as ready as I can," Marve said. "I know my footwork has improved dramatically. My five-step drop, three-step, bootlegs are all so much quicker. The ball's coming out quicker. My footwork's been the most improved."

Weiner is asked if he'll be surprised should Marve wind up as Miami's starter this season.

"One thing he and I talk about all the time is that's not in our control," Weiner says. "And you don't want to go in talking like that or saying that. He wants to go in and compete because he knows competition makes everyone better. If he competes and gets the job, he'll make the most of his opportunity. He knows Miami is a tremendous place, and he has a great opportunity in front of him.

"He's like any kid. No one wants to sit on the sideline. But he's a consummate team guy."

* Marve says he has already received his acceptance letter from the University of Miami. And he expects to be assigned No. 12 when he arrives this summer. But that won't be his ultimate number.

"I'll get my high school number, 9, when Lance [Leggett] leaves," Marve said.

"UM offensive coordinator Patrick Nix has already said that Marve will get a shot to compete with Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman for the starting job in the fall."

Competing with those two shouldn't be that hard.

Read that earlier this morning. Marve's the truth--I have next to no doubts that he will play and play well this year--forget the redshirt. And whoever comes in behind him is going to be sitting for at least 3 years unless he gets injured.

Give Shannon time to get Marve some more weapons & protection around him and Miami's offense of the past few years will seem like merely a bad dream.

I think if they can get Franklin, Gunn, and Morse into the interior part of the line, the line will improve dramatically. Rutledge is another guy that could help. I gave up on Bain a long time ago.

Go compare UT and Miami in two ways:

1) arrests and charges against football players since 2000

2) graduation rate for football players since 2000

Then tell me who "Thug U" is just by straight comparison between those two schools. It's obvious you haven't done your homework on this one and are just perpetuating what the TV media & sportswriters have to say regarding Miami football.

Honestly I had more respect for MIami last year then I did for my own team.
But if I recall correctly they got in a brawl on NATIONAL TELEVISION!

And I am not judging by what i saw on TV and in the newspaper. I saw the fight go down and I have watched many times since.
For god sakes a player took his helmet off and was on top of a guy smahing his head in basically. And he only apologized when he was told by Miami officials to do so because they thought that it would get him back on the team.
I know what I am talking about here and you can compare all you want to to Ut but they are about equal.
Oh and compar eUT and Miami in one who has got in a brawl on NATIONAL TELEVISION and who has not?
And since 2 thousand the arrests and charges against UT football players have all been thrown out.
What about the charges on Miami?

Guarantee Miami's trophy case stretches a little further down the hall than UT's.

I am not comparing UT and Miami in wins, losses, ne of that stuff.
I am not even saying that UT is not a school of thugs.
I am just saying that since the brawl last year on National TV I have lost respect for Miami.
You will have to ask Coeburn Cane why UT was brought into the convo. I was just giving my opinion on what I think about Miami since the brawl.

Reddick is who you're speaking of, and he issued the apology before Miami took action against him for his actions and suspended him the rest of the year. He's out this season too because of he popped an ACL in a pickup bball game.

I guess you need to make sure you know how the sitch went down before you point to it man. Reddick apologized of his own volition, and Miami still suspended him. Not the ACC, not the NCAA--Miami's coaching staff took action and suspended him.

jesus christ, reddick has the worst luck ever.

Thanks for the laugh. Miami turning down character risks and worrying about grades! I thought those were required before getting accepted. Can't wait for the 4 SWVA Miami Hurricane fans to chime in on the greatness of the U and then bring up stats from 30 years ago.

Perpetuate the stereotype, go ahead. That's always easier than looking at anything positive that's happened in the past 10 years at Miami. Miami did some things to earn their image back in the day--never have defended that, never will...but lots of the stuff nowadays that's happened have been brought on Miami by someone else.

FIU Brawl - James Bryant bows to the FIU fan section after scoring a TD, then 2 of FIU's DB's jump our kicker & 3rd string QB on the PAT to touch off the brawl. FIU players were swinging helmets, kicking people, and trying to hit coaches/assistants. But that was all Miami's fault, and FIU's guys were just trying to protect themselves...sure...whatta copout.

Pata's death - Dude gets shot down in cold blood and it's somehow Miami's fault? I've heard people say that it wouldn't have happened if he weren't a Miami football player--I beg to differ. When someone wants to kill somebody randomly, they kill them, Miami football player or not. That'd be like me trying to link the Korean guy to the VT football team somehow...ridiculous.

Meriweather returning fire on a burglar - There was an intruder at the house that Meriweather & Gooden were living in. Gooden gets hit, Meriweather returns fire with a gun that he has a permit for--yet he's a gun-toting thug. For doing something that tons of people wished were possible during the VT shootings--owning a weapon and returning fire on an assailant.

Lots and lots of double-standards when it comes to how people view the stuff that's happened to Miami in the past year or 2.

BTW--Coker and Shannon flat out denied Devine. They said unless he could get his stuff together to qualify under what they require in admissions, not just NCAA, then they wouldn't even offer him. He told them he didn't know if he could do that, so they pulled his offer. Coker kept it on the table for a while, but once he was gone, Shannon pulled it.

Trust me--keep thinking & believing the stereotype guys--Shannon's about to blow that all to pieces w/the type of ship he's going to run at Miami now that he's calling the shots as head man.

Miami's the better school anyway.

lmfao, wtf are you talking about man. You keep putting national television into all caps and the game didnt even have regional coverage, let alone national television. Do you know what national television even is? The game had 2 scrub annoucers, 1 being a Miami graduate who announced the game for sunsports. DTV and Dish picked it up as part of their ppv package. gtfoh, if youre gonna talk smack at least get everything straight.

As for ol' Wet Vag!na fan, ya gotta laugh. The neers had their shot at the canes every year in the Big Least and couldnt get it done but 2 times out of 13 tries, once while the canes were limited to less than 50 scholarships. Then the canes leave the crappy conference(there really isnt a conference without miami,vt, and bc) and the eers cant even beat little ol' Louisville.

Then a kid who was a canes fan his whole life decides to go to Morgantown, which obviously wasnt his first choice. It wasnt the first choice of Tarus McKinley for that matter either. Devine lived in a crack house(true story, I'll provide the link if needed), cussed out his coaches after the state game, got suspended from school multiple times, and stole his guardian's vehicle and left the state without permission. That doesnt include having multiple children, but I'll stop there. Miami did not recruit Noel Devine during his senior season. Aside from grades, there was the character issues. To play football at Miami, its a bit different than UF or FSU. They dont have a sliding scale so you have to have a 2.5gpa and an 820sat. At FSU, if you have a 800 and a 2.6 you are in, its an "either, or" type thing, but not at UM.

You really gotta love the eers though. They won what??? what was that theyve won??? I wonder how many times the canes dusted them during the last 34 game winning streak? Notice I said the last streak because its not the first 30 game win streak that Miami has ever put together. How many first rounders did Wet Vag put in the draft last year? Yeah, aside from beating a decent Rutgers team last year and beating a so-so Georgia team a few years ago, Wet hasnt had a significant victory in the history of their program. Not one. Talk about character, sheesh Jerry Porter and Chris Henry, nuff said. Miami has never had a player tear a team apart like those guys. I got first hand reports on how big of an arsehole Porter is.

When you think of the U, you talk about Jimmy, Jim Kelly, Ray Ray, Sapp, Playmaker, and 2-0 E Reed the best DB.

Anyway, no, there will never be anyone to ever dominate a national title game like that. They were very good and at the same time, Miami was using 2 guys that were TE's and converted them to tackles to get through that game. Im thinking Carlos Ethridge was about 230 pounds trying to block Curry on the left side.

I just hate that Miami didnt take the game seriously man. It could have been a good game at least. Erickson was the ring leader too. He stayed drunk the entire week leading up to that game.
