... I know many won't care but I'm stressed about it, so I'm venting. (For me, my dogs are my kids.)
Our youngest dachshund stopped eating on Saturday. She got progressively worse Sunday, and overnight (vomiting, dehydrated).
She couldnt even keep down Pedialyte.
My sister has taken her to Dr. Donna and I'm waiting to hear from them now. (She puked the whole way down there and then layed down and stopped moving.)

I hate when a pet is sick.
I mean they tell you so much by actions, but unfortunately they can't tell you whats wrong.
I've been paranoid about any food/treats that I give mine lately, especially with the constantly increasing list of tainted foods and such.
Do you think it might be parvo? Sort of sounds like it to me I am afraid.
She's fully vaccinated. Her next parvo/distemper booster isn't due until September. It's similar syptoms though, I agree.
The first thing I fear is a blockage - she tends to eat non-food items. We're very careful about what is kept within her reach, but those dogs are smarter and sneakier than we give them credit for. Next thing I worry about is did she catch something from the creek she was in Wednesday & Thursday.
I'm waiting to hear from my sister at the vets - she doesn't have a cell phone signal down there so she can't update me easily.
Just got a little bit of an update
Don't have a lot of info yet:
They're keeping her overnight (not a shocker).
She's very Dehydrated (this we knew).
Xray showed no obstruction.
Had to spin her blood twice to check for electrolytes.
They're giving her something for vomiting (she still vomiting tons). If she continues to vomit after getting her IV they'll give her barium and check for obstruction again. Blood work is being done. I'm going to go there and give her a quick visit at lunch.
Supposedly, a dog that we used to have (got too big, it was my parents dog, and they couldn't deal with it, was knocking them down which isn't good), died of Parvo even though it was fully vacinated and everything.
Had a cat that we had forever died recently with its system shutting down, and while dad didn't have any of the cans, he had fed it lots of the different types that have now been itentified as contaminated.
Hopefully yours is just something minor
Sounds like parvo, I had a "mexican ankle biter" once and it contracted parvo and died. He had all his shots. It just about killed my daughter.

Well we now know it's not parvo - had the full blood work done.
But what it IS hasn't yet been determined.
She wagged her tail for me when I went to see her. She hasn't vomited in about an hour and half so far.
Keeping our fingers crossed.
None of the food she's fed is on the recall list, but as we all know that listed is updated with new brands and types daily.
Donna is very good at what she does. The IVs and meds should be kicking in soon.

We had one that had it. She was a rescue from the Sullivan County Shelter. She had vaccinations before she came home to us, but apparently the vaccinations were given too late.
She got parvo, spent 5 days at the vet and actually beat it. Came home for Thanksgiving, and had to go back to the vet the next day, where she died of distemper.
That's one foul nasty facility.
Just got an update on my pooch:
Since 2:00 pm no vomiting.
She will continue to receive fluids and anti-vomiting meds through the night.
Vet believes that she has gastroenteritis. However, if they see much more vomiting they'll go through with the barium test (as a just in case).
Will know if she can go home tomorrow about 10:00 or 10:30 am
My parents bought several Pit Bull puppies when we were kids. I'd say at least 3/4 of them died from parvo. It's a horrible way to die.
How is the dog today?
She still feels rough, but looks better, has a little more energy.
She will be staying another night on IV fluids and meds. She vomited a few times last night despite the meds, and refused all food offered (boiled chicken, dry food, canned food). She hasn't eaten since Saturday morning. Even though she's not as bad as she was Monday morning, she's still feeling very bad (I saw her at lunch time).
Sometime during the night she attempted to burrow (a dachshund trait) but only managed to rub her nose raw & bloody (she has a little OCD).
They did more Xrays this morning to check for blockages but didn't find any. Right now they're thinking it's gastroenteritis.
My mom will go check on her soon and will take her regular food and one of her favorite treats, a bed and blankets (no she's not spoiled [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img] ).

My daughter had the intestinal bug a couple of weeks ago, you know, the nasty one where both ends end up sore. Well, one week later her shi-zhu came down with the same thing. Surely the dog didn't catch it from her!!
Well, Saturday night a friend told me about her dad's shi-zhu's episode that was identical to my daughter's dog. Guess what? Her dad had the bug two weeks ago also. Coincidence?
Sounds like a conspiracy!!! lol
It's the cats. The cats of the world are the head conspirators.
This morning's update
As of 9:00 am:
She's still not wanting to eat.
She didn't vomit overnight - her last vomit was yesterday before closing. They're going to do the barium test on her today (I think).
Best time for me to check back would be around noonish or so.
I probably won't be able to go visit her, because I've been late getting back to work the last two days, and will have to make up my missed time. Mom said she would visit with her a couple times today.
She's acting pretty much the same as she did yesterday - lethargic, droppy, but wagging her tail when people speak to her.
She may not come home again tonight.
Did the dog eat any potpourri? Our dog about died when she was a pup because she decided to take a piece under the couch and eat it. She stayed at the vets for several days with some of the same problems your dog is having.
She hasn't eaten any of that, but she IS a chronic non-food eater. They've xray'd and xray'd, and will do a barium test next.
My mom said she got up and walked around some today, went to the lobby door and wanted to leave (still attached to her IV pole). She barked at noises she didn't like, and is drinking water on her own now. She still won't eat, is vomiting, and is still not acting like her full self.
I wouldn't wanta eat yet either after all of that!!!
Well, it sure is helping with her diet! She needs to lose about 9 pounds as it is...
Good news!
The whole family went to visit her this afternoon.
She gave us kisses (first time all week). Seemed to be in fairly good spirits, but still very tired/weak.
She was in the midst of her barium test during this.
We went home, and got the news at about 6:30 that Miss Pickle pooped the poop of all poops, the mother poop, poopzilla, mondo poop (diarrhea type).
It would appear that she has either or found and eaten a forgotten (yet forbidden) rope toy, or has eaten a mop.
We thought we threw out all the rope toys a year ago (because she was eating them). But dachshunds are slick and will get what they want one way or the other.
Glad to hear she is doing somewhat better. I know this has to be a huge relief to you.
5/17/07 Update
She is now vomiting up whatever those fibers are that she pooped out yesterday. She did drink for them this morning, is acting pretty decent. Eating still doesn't interest her (day 6 without food).
They saved some of the fibers for us to see if we would recognize what it was. Our mop is still there and in tact. We have no carpet or throw rugs. We have no rope toys.
The vet is out of the office until about 1:00 today. I take my lunch at 1:00 so I'll go down there then and talk to her then. Exploratory surgery may be an option if the barium test does not conclusively show where the offending fibers are residing. It would appear Miss Pickle may not be home again tonight.
Update. Pickle has a pretty rough blockage. She apparently has eaten an entire washcloth, maybe more than that (considering her habits). She will be going into surgery soon.

Pickle had a couple hours of surgery this evening.
About 12" of dying/dead intestine was removed. There was a small perforation. There was a wad of the stuff in her stomach too, so there's a second incision there. Vet said it looked like she'd maybe got hold of a dish towel too (not surprised).
She had been on antibiotics all week, and will be on more IV antibiotics for 48 hours. She definitely wont be home this weekend.
Only thing we can figure out is she grabbed these things during laundry time - dropped from the dryer or something.

You'll have to pardon me not being amused by your poor attempt at humor. The vet bill is the least of my worries at the moment. Money is no reason to allow a companion to suffer or die when treatment is available.
When I got each of my dogs they were intended to be companions, and not disposable property.
Those not willing to provide proper care shouldn't be pet owners in the first place.
Wow, I would have never thought of such a condition even existed for a dog or other housepet.
No animal is worth that much money. I love my cat to death, but if that time ever came, I could deal with taking him to the taxidermist.
That's your personal choice, but for my own pets I feel otherwise. For example, you may wish to spend $2K on fishing equipment and the like, I prefer to spend mine on my companion animals when necessary. (And at least you didn't resort to poor humor when commenting on someone's pet).
This pup is only 3 years old and in otherwise great health.
Will I have a $2K bill? Likely, and I was aware of that from the beginning. However my convictions will not permit me to kill an animal over money, especially when the condition is highly treatable.
Hope the dog gets better.
Guess my hounds constant barking isn't so bad after all. I'd hate to think I'd have to keep anything out of his reach that he might eat. Only thing other than his food that he wants to eat is whatever I'm eating [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

That's a really good way of expressing it.
I've seen people have pets that died and the person died shortly there after. Seen people die and there pets die right after.
While I wouldn't wanna spend that much on a vet bill, if I could, I'd pay to keep something I love as family alive.
Vets understand that people aren't normally able to pay huge chunks of money at once, they'll work with people, because why they do want to make a living, they do have a general love for animals, or they wouldn't be in the business.
My mom had to put her pomeranian to sleep a short while back. The vet ended up doing quite a few of the services for free or next to it, taking care of burying the dog (not destroying it), and even sent my mom a condolence card.
We all, or almost all, spend money on frivilous things, things that we don't need or have to have. I'm sure over the course of a year I spend 2k on wasteful junk, so why is is such a problem to spend it on something that you love?
We have a long, good history with Donna. I have no doubt that she'll do us right with a payment plan. We give dogs what little time, attention, and patience that we can spare (along with some kibble and treats). In return, they give us unconditional love, devotion, affection, laughter, and joy. It is the best deal that man has ever made.
