Sadness blankets our area

For the second month in a row, we have lost a former outstanding athlete from RCHS. Rumor has it that an OD was the cause in both cases. Both these young ladies spent time in our home and were welcome parts of our lives, truly, we considered them part of our extended family. What message are we not getting out to these young people? Both were in their twenties and had their whole lives before them.
If you have any influence at all in the lives of young people, warn them, caution them, exhort them to stay away from these damaging activities.

Amen Kay. Its truly sad, especially for the families, especially this last one. I was sandwiched in between both age wise, and knew them both. Its bad enough when a disease takes a life, but senseless drug use is even worse.

I'd really like to hear more of this story. I know it's really nosy for a complete stranger to say that, but lessons could be learned from these two OD deaths. I think the thing that frustrates me the most when I watch media coverage of tragic events like this, is that the majority of the people act shocked that it happened. That means we are blind, apathetic, or need to do a better job of looking for the trouble signs that may seem insignificant. Yes, we need to educate kids about drugs, but kids turn to drugs for a reason. Peer pressure and mystique certainly jump out as reasons, but I think that there is always something deeper that causes severe usage and risky habits.

Was this young lady in today's obituaries?

I agree with 82abn. Not so much for the gossip factor of it, but to me it just seems like if its not out of sight out of mind, maybe more would realize the chances?

Probably not but it just seems like there has to be solutions

Plenty of drugs to go around in the Duffield area....I went to DB and thought I had been around alot of drugs, until I started hangin around over in there....

Me either. Its ridiculous. The worst part is, it really isn't being prosecuted, or tracked down much. Of course you see the sheriff with some pot plants if they catch someone growing it, but thats about it unfortunately.

Did anyone see where the Damascus police chief was caught dealing meth? Just a sign of the times.

It baffles me also. I've heard so many excuses. One is "Life is so hard my parents dont love me, I don't have stuff" etc.

Well, if a certain person gets elected in Scott Co., look for there to be quite a bit more activity on the drug bust front.

Problem now is that the person currently holding the position is more involved in drugs and other illegal activities than those who would be arrested.

Yep. I think both individuals that are running against Broadwater are highly qualified and would do an excellent job. I know where my votes going, but I will be happy if either one wins for that matter. I hope they possibly work together if either one gets it.

I do know that here in Wise County, that the Drug Task Force is continuing to look at situations and individuals. It seems to me that the Court System is the problem. Whey they get to Court, oftentimes they are placed on probabation, and even unsupervised probation. What is that? Nothing. Just my two cents worth.

I agree teach. I have a friend who is a probation officer in Lee,Wise and Scott and although he is covered up with probationer (maybe that is part of the problem) it baffles me the way some things are handled.

I always hear that the prosecutors and/or the police don't go after the small fish, trying to catch the big fish.

I understand the idea behind that, but it doesn't seem to really be working. So wouldn't it seem like its time to start killing off the small fish and let the big fish die off of starvation (so to speak).

Why not prosecute all if its against the law? You always here they are after the pushers, not the users. Go ahead and bust both.

For the type of drug abuse that is so prevailent in this area, the "big fish" to blame is Medicaid and Emergency Rooms (with the exception of methamphetamines).

Come election time in Scott Co, there will be another pic of Sheriff B. posing with a throng of pot plants...always seems to be anyways. I don't think that there will ever by a tried and true solution to the drug problem. But, it seems that the residents (voters) have the power to demand to know what is being done about this problem and the law enforcement politicians tend to listen more in election years. Yes, more needs to be done. Unfortunately, most drug offenses seem to be nonviolent, so they get pushed to the backburner as far as punishment goes. I am concerned over the fact that there seems to be newer and better ways to get and use drugs. Whether they are illegal, prescription, or fall into another category, the use and abuse of drugs is the biggest concern to me. I'm a drinker, but what prevents me from being an alcoholic or moving on to more powerful modes of impairment? How can some of us that were party animals in our younger days slow down and be reasonable while others can't or won't? Just makes me want to throw my hands up and concede that there is no answer and that there will always be tragic stories like this one and that people will continue to make poor decisions that may end up killing them or someone else. I haven't even mentioned the psychological toll that this problem causes to those who live with people who are substance abusers. I'll save that for a different sermon.

There is no solution fighting drugs. But, in this country, everyone is always whining about overcorwded jails, payin for convicts etc. I think the solution is to legalize drugs (let folks kill themselves with them if they wish, but at the same time tax them heavily but not so much that dealers can still compete), set standards in accordance to what can constitute a lawsuit (to weed out the friviolus), and set the age of consent at 16 or 17 (so we quit filling our jails with 20 year olds that got with a 16 year old thinkin she was 24..lol..at the same time make stiff mandatory penalties for any offense with someone under the age of consent)..these measures alone would decrease our jail population by almost half IMO, and would provide revenues to be used elsewhere in our economy. I'm not trying to sound insensitive to this thread, just my practical view of how to solve these problems.

I just think it is time that crybabies get handcuffed from suing for every little thing, and then ya have folks being set to jail to be housed over using drugs...not to mention guys going to jail for getting with girls who dress like sluts, look twice their age, and entice them. Lawsuits should have to have merit or the person that brings them should be penalized. Drugs are drugs...take the taboo away and many prolly wouldn't use as much..and at least they would be regulated and taxed. And as far as the thing about girls go: I was always taught that if it looked like a slut, talked like a slut, and behaved like a slut...it was a slut. Society seems to almost condone the way young women dress and act nowdays, so they shouldn't penalize young men for falling for it...just my opinion.
