Wise Little League Football sign-ups

We will be having our football signups for the Crunch Bunch, Div I, and Div II on Saturday July 28th from 12-3 or 4 at Carroll Dale Stadium. The Crunch Bunch is for kids in 1st-3rd grade (depending on age). I encourage anyone who has a child of age wanting to play to come down and sign them up. If you have any questions, IM me or ask on the forum. I had about 17 kids on the team last year. It was also our first year in the league with a Crunch Bunch age group. I would like to have about 25 to 30 kids on my team and the other two teams this seaon. I have no info on the schedule yet. We will play Appy, Norton, St. Paul, Clintwood, and Pound. I have been informed that Coeburn is no longer in this league. I've heard that they are starting a league with Cumberland district towns. I don't know the validity of this however. Once again, bring the kids down on the 28th and sign them up. See you there.

It's that time of year again! My very favorite. I never thought that I could enjoy anything any more than LPD Friday nights, but watching my boy play blows FNL out of the water.

Just a quick update. The sign ups are from 12-4 on July 28th (Sat) at Carroll Dale Stadium. We will also be passing out the fundraising information. So if any of the Wise kids come to you wanting to sell you a pizza kit, buy one please. They are only $11. This money will help us buy some much needed equipment. Thanks in advance.
Also, if you have never been to any of the little league games I would encourage you to come. There is a $1 gate charge and the concession stands are opened. Come have a hot dog, popcorn, and a drink while you enjoy some of the purest football you will ever watch. These kids are so much fun to watch. And I sure you will leave with a funny story about the game to pass on. See ya'll out there.

I saw in Thursday's Coalfield that the soccer league is having sign-ups on the same day, same time. It said at the high school, so I'm assuming that it will be at the football field. What is up with that? Are they still mad because we are now playing on the same fields they do?

I think there was some feelings hurt over us using the fields up there last year. I think it's garbage that a quack (doctor) from BSG can come up there and gripe and grumble about Wise kids using the fields instead of his group of kids that are from TN an everywhere else. I'm over all that. We will be there teaching our kids real football. Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the sport of soccer. My oldest played it until he could put on the pads. My youngest will play until he can too (if he chooses). I do think that the soccer program is good in that it gets the kids out for exercise and being with friends, like all other youth sports. Who knows, maybe this year everybody can get along. Our signups will be at the field house. See everybody out there Sat the 28th.

I'm looking forward to it, so are my kids. I hope things are better this year. It got to be a mess, and at times dangerous, last year. I think this year will be a good one. We've got some great kids going to div II, and div I should have some good ones too. I know of several that are already working out getting ready for it. They are really excited. So am I, I get more enjoyment out of watching the kids than I do high school, and I really enjoy high school ball, so that's saying something.
Question though, do you know if they are going to have the schedules ready, or will we get them at first practice?

I'm fired up as heck for it. My eldest is ready to roll. The little one decided after trying it last year that it wasn't his thing, so he can help me cheer for his brother. I agree with you as well on the enjoyment aspect. As much as I love Friday night lights, I enjoy watching my boy belt folks on Saturdays even more.

I am waiting for the Commissioner to email us a copy of the updated rules and game schedules. Idealy, I want to pass out the schedule (I will make one that will have our Camp, practices, pictures, and games on it), fund raising stuff along with the registration. If you have any more questions, just let me know. Also, a change from last year, No six year olds will be playing and all games will be on Saturday. In the event of a rain out, we will make it up the following Tuesday.

Just an update on our sign ups. We had 69 kids sign up! We will be having sign ups again on August 11 (Sat) from 12-2 at the Carroll Dale Satdium fieldhouse. YOu can also stop by the fieldhouse and sign up anytime prior to that date. Our goal is to have 100+ kids on the three rosters. Thanks to everyone who came out. See ya'll next Saturday.

Gotta love the good ol town of Wise, once again giving B.I. and the Little League the shaft (ordered my ridiculously overpriced fundraiser goods today). Folks, I don't mind fundraising, but when you give softball $10,000 for a batting cage that is not being used, and the football program gets 500-1000, you have to scratch the ol noggin'.

Did the town really give softball $10,000?

If you are referring to the batting cage at the airport the reason it isn't used is because they forgot about this thing called electricty. the building doesn't have any. and its kind of hard to hit in the dark.

Those funds were given last year at the request of Marty Adkins. But it's still not being used, and all the little league baseball kids are trophy-less. Welp, somebody dropped the ball (pardon the pun) getting 10G and not taking care of the juice issue. We'll have to rank that one beside our town pool as far as blunders go.

I worked with Little League for several years and I know how hard it is to maintain the fields at the ballpark, much less fund the league.

I think it is a shame that Little League has to pay the electric bill at a town facility. In my opinion the entire park should be maintained and funded by the town of Wise.

I believe the town of Wise has tied up their funds in yet another study on how they can continue to keep paying for studies and not do anything with the results but still retain their jobs. I think by the time they add up all the money they've wasted on town studies you could have rebuilt the Wise Inn by now.

What is sad is the little league all stars had 9 kids out and thas it.
And Wise is supposed to be the Baseball Mecca on this side of the state (to Bristol anyways).

Have to agree.
A trophy is: "A prize or memento, such as a cup or plaque, received as a symbol of victory, especially in sports. "

I feel that there's just too much coddling of this sort throughout kids lives, and ultimately it sets the kids up for failure. By the time they get out of college (if they even get that far) they're going to wonder "why didn't I land that $100K/year job? Everyone in school always said I was fantastic, always did a great job, wonderful. There was no room for improvement."

If sports are supposed to teach teamwork and discipline and growth, then telling everyone that they're all equal and all winners defeats the purpose. Why work harder or why try to improve when everyone says you're good enough as it is...

Winners get trophies.
Losers get a certificate of participation maybe, and work harder to get trophies next year.

There's too much need for instant gratification. Kids have no need for goals anymore. Everything is handed to them.

That 11-12 group that I saw play was dreadful. I kept thinking that I had to have been watching Ervinton or Thomas Walker. I couldnt believe that it was a group from Wise that was that bad.

...and folks are trying to blame soccer for the decline in baseball at Wise. It is simply a different age IMO. The kids aren't willing to work as hard to exel. Working on the field is harder than playing video games/watching TV. The passion, drive, and work ethic is not there.

And this is derived from the parents, if you do not instill it in them they won't have it, or at least they won't develop what is naturally there.

I used to believe that, but no more. I am seeing alot of lazy kids that come from families where mom and dad hustle and bust ass to make a living. I see alot of kids that are spoiled and coddled, and stand with their palm out waiting on the handout.

Those are great numbers.....I do wonder if Wise might be better off playing "in-house" with those kinds of numbers (Like PV and GC)

I was trying to infer that as well. Even the parents that are go getters and bust their humps are responsible for their children not having it, by just handing them everything and not making them earn it. If they want to play the Xbox make them earn it, mow the lawn, rake the leaves whatever get to play. Don't use these games and such as a pacifier to get them to shut up and stay quiet, shoot you could even use it to get them to go outside and play spend an hour outside playing earn 30 minutes on the video game.

Nowadays with the cost of living way up, and the correlation with pitiful wages, most have to multi-job to make ends meet. Parent-child time is down, and what the kid does when the folks are away is sit in front of the PS3 while the babysitter gabs on the phone. It is just the way it is.

Very very true, my S-I-L and B-I-L are perfect examples of this, they don't give any guidance and let their 2 boys just set at home and do whatever they want. Money isn't a real issue for 2 people with doctorates and great jobs but they just don't make time for their kids, my wife fusses about them all the time.
My other S-I-L got them a Wii while they were in for the summer and put restrictions on it, they could only play like 2 hours a day and had to do chores around the house to earn that.

We played in house up until last season. I coached in it, but never liked it. My biggest complaint was this: You play the same team every week. If you won or lost, you worked on the same thing and never found your true weak spots or strong spots. We may have been able to run quick pitch left all night, but what if our opponent didn't have the ability to contain. Does that mean we were blessed with speed? Not really, because we were able to scrimmage other teams a couple of times and had it handed to us because they were strong were our opponent had been weak. I'm a big fan of our "little LPD". The kids get a charge out of playing at other places like the high school kids. There were about 90 kids last season, so the 100+ is not out of the real of possibility. The more kids we have, the less that are at home on the computer of video game consoles. I love video games, but you need some physical activity.
As for the batting cage, how many state titles did Kelly win WITHOUT the batting cage up there. I think it was a bad idea and the money could have bought some new equipment to replace that "rag-tag" garbage we had this season. I had to super glue our catchers helmet twice. But who knows.

I know from watching my eldest play that playing "The other Wise" after the second time kinda lost its luster. He gets considerably more fired up playing kids from other places. I like the way that it is now much better (plus it removes some of the stupid internal bickering)

1. We parents pay for the trophies, that's part of the fees that we pay.

2. Our kids earn those trophies, I don't care if they win every game or none. They are out there doing the job, not us.

I can see your point 2 teams would not be enough I think 4 teams would be the magic number.

The Little League baseballers are still waiting on their trophies. The league says it is broke. I wonder where the $35 reg fee that we paid went? That money is for insurance AND trophies.

And another thing. You try looking into the faces of 5, 6, 7 year old kids at the end of the season, and tell them good job and that's it. Not too many kids would want to play.
When they get those trophies, their little faces light up, they think they've really done something. Yeah, when they are older, they have to work very hard to get any awards for their efforts. But I guarantee, when they become parents, they will remember what it felt like when they were young, and just starting to play sports, and how it felt to get their first trophy. I would hazzard a guess to say that the joy a 5 year old feels with his first, is pretty close to a senior getting the MVP.

Why make them THINK they've done something when in reality they've not earned a winners trophy?? That's teaching them absolutely nothing. This is supposed to be a learning experience.

And if "good job" isn't enough for a kid on a losing team, then that's really sad. It goes back to the instant gratification and the development of the "me me me" generation.

When I was in school if a team/group I was in didn't win, then we just didn't win and hoped for better next time around. It made us work harder. It encouraged teamwork and hard work. And for the winners, their win is greatly dimished because even the losers are told they're winners.

Kids are being ruined and turned into horrible people by being told they're entitled to everything and they're always great and perfect and wonderful.

Why not have them EARN things anymore??
Is it worse to raise an earner, a goal maker? Or a kid who thinks he's prince of all he sees, with his hand sticking out all the time?

I've heard college coaches talk about the best strategy for little leaguers is to play the entire regular season maybe 20 games...and thas it. no all stars, no travel team. the philosphy behind this is, everyone is an allstar, thus everyone comes back next year.

but i dunno.

Why don't you play 8 man football at Wise then? You would have alot more teams, and you would not have to travel. With 8 men football it forces people to make tackles. It forces people to pick up blocks. And it forces coaches to let everyone play.

But what do I know?

Exactly why would you want to instil false hope and deceive them into thinking they've done something when they haven't.

I agree.....what do you know? Just kidding big guy.

Not a bad idea, 8-on-8, make the field a bit smaller too. Ever watch a basketball game between players between ages 5-9? Everybody flocks to the ball, 10 players in an 8 foot radius. I've always said youth basketball programs for K-3 should not be 5-on-5. They should be 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 at the most. You can't develop much skill if 7-8 other people are trying to take the ball away from you.
