A Month Away!
Last night/early this morning walking though, inspecting the rec cages at work with a co-worker, I had to smile just a bit because for the first time this year for me, the cool air reminded this ol' boy that in just a month, it's going to be my favorite time of year. The Twin Springs Titans will make the trip from Nicklesville to the Reservation to battle my beloved Indians, and for just a few hours, all will be good in this world. I have plenty of comp time to burn, and unlike last year, I'm not going to miss 6 JJK games :). Now for the serious question: I have 3 co-workers who seem to think that Haysi's Tigers will thump my Tribe at Sandlick, and are willing to give me 14 points. Should I take that? I think I will (can't pass up a free dinner at my place of choosing-just need to remember where the most expensive eating establishment in the next 100 miles is)
Is everybody else getting stoked about this season?

Re: A Month Away!
I can NEVER read Haysi I THINK that is a reasonable bet IF Kelly is a improved team but Haysi will have alot of time to prepare for that game......Right now I think Haysi is the Fav but by 14 points I don't know
-
Re: A Month Away!
I think playing in the LPD will pay dividends when we head to Sandlick.
-
Re: A Month Away!
A month and 2 weeks from now, PV gets to renew their rivalry with Richlands.
-
Re: A Month Away!
I would take the bet if they gave me 28 points, Kelly still cant make a 14 point spread with Haysi.
-
Re: A Month Away!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
-
Re: A Month Away!
I kind of think even if Kelly is vastly improved, be it fundamentals or whatever, that doesn't really prepare you for Haysi. You never know what they are going to throw at you, and normally you think that teams are pretty 'vanilla' at the beginning of the season, then you play Haysi and they come out with a playbook the size of several small European countries
I'd not take the bet with 14 vs them at Sandlick. I'm kind of like Counts in that I can never read them, and almost every year we say they should have a fall off, but then they turn around and don't.
Don't take the bet, then if you win, you still get to gloat

Re: A Month Away!
Kelly might, and I say might win 3 games this season, its a stretch.
-
Re: A Month Away!
I'll gladly take that bet Chubzfan. How much you want to put on that one?
-
Re: A Month Away!
I know what you mean about never being able to tell with Haysi. The Tigers had me shaking my head last year when they lost to Lee. We played the Gens last game of the season and made them look bad (was worried about them based on Haysi game). That's the wonderful part about high schol football I suppose.
-
Re: A Month Away!
I'm a big LPD advocate - but based on my knowledge of both Kelly and Haysi (I saw both teams in action last season) I expect the Tigers to win by a wide margin. Also, the Sandlick field gives them one of the most significant home field advantages in our Region. I think Haysi finished 8-3 & was the BDD champions with a relatively young team. (I think they'll have the best placekicker in our area.) I'll put the final score at 31-12 Haysi.

Re: A Month Away!
If the schedule is the same as last year, kelly that is,,I see them beating Pound, Cove, and Coeburn. The rest of the teams they play should take them.
-
Re: A Month Away!
Haysi lost some very significant players to graduation this past year. They had a couple of really good lineman graduate and they will also have a new tailback and quarterback. They will have probably the top fb/lb in the region though and have one of the area's top tight ends and also one of the best kickers around. With their schedule I would say they go 8-2. The Lee game last year was an aberration and I seriously doubt that will happen again. I think they lose to Clintwood and Honaker but will be competitive in both games. I don't see that playing at Sandlick really matters that much. Traditionally Haysi has been about the same on the road record wise as they have at home. Their field is middle range quality and maybe even slightly above average when you compare it to other teams in the region. About like everybody else it is in good shape in september and october and not so good in november and beyond. It's a pretty fast track though because it doesn't have alot of lumps or divits like you will find at alot of schools in the area.

Re: A Month Away!
I actually think Kelly has a shot to get off to a 5-1 start. I don't think it will happen though because I think they will most likely lose to Grundy but I think they can get a win over RC(should be a good game) and atleast be 4-2. They will probably lose their last 4 though by pretty good margins.

Re: A Month Away!
Wise has a ways to go. Their QB is real good, but he can't win the games by himself. Haysi-35-14
-
Re: A Month Away!
I wish Kelly all the best this season, hopefully they catch a few breaks and win some big ball games.
-
Re: A Month Away!
If Kelly doesn't win at least five games, I'll probably eat my hat. I think people will be surprised, if I know B.I. the way I think I do, and I think I do.

Why will people be suprised in the way you know B.I.? (That is how rumers get started you know)
Honisly though I am not sure what kind of suprise Wise has up there sleave becouse
#1 everyone expects them to be a much improved team with experenced players and several talented transfers to boot
#2 No one looks for Wise to stay in the wishbone IMHO I think they will line up in the Wing T ( Now I might be suprised if they come out in a 4 Wide Out PV type offence or the single wing)
-
Re: A Month Away!
It's about time somebody bring the single wing to the LPD, speaking of that offense. I have always enjoyed watching Ragsdale's crew run it.
-
Re: A Month Away!
Its easy to reun that when you have a Behemoth like this opening holes.

But if you get behind in a game, its tought to come back.

Re: A Month Away!
Top fullback over Miles? He was 1st team all state last year.
-
Re: A Month Away!
Giles has ran that offense for 30 years. Big or small, they have made it work. The drawback, as you said is it has little "rally-power"

Honistly I would have to say yes Powers was a better FB (Not taking anythink away from Miles both he and Bright from Coeburn and Appys FB were as good and any team could hope to have)
-
Re: A Month Away!
Miles is tough. I would give a very slight edge to Miles as far as FB goes but I didn't say just FB. I said FB/LB.

I agree that Miles is a heck of a RB But the fear of the Jet sweep opens up the middle for him much more than anything Powers saw. as far as open field running goes Miles IS the better runner but as far as the 4th and 2 got to have a 1st down I would take Powers

Re: A Month Away!
dont forget about robbins from cwood hes a good fb also
-
Re: A Month Away!
Robbins ain't bad. He isn't the caliber of Powers or Miles but he's a good ball player. He is an excellent kicker though. He and Owens are two of the best in the state. Have to give it to Robbins right now though since Owens missed that crucial, clutch extra point in the playoff game last year. I believe he will redeem himself though and be the top group A kicker in the state before he graduates.
-
Re: A Month Away!
Word is Lebanon may have a kicker better than eather of them
Given that Robbins is a Jr this year i did not add him however as far as being a lead blocker and pass catcher he is as good as any of the other top FBs
-
Re: A Month Away!
robbins is played very well last year to be just a sophomore this year i think should be a very very good year for him at fullback.my family in clintwood told me that he had been working very hard this summer on both kicking and punting
