Wal Mart

I'm beginning to wonder how the Norton store stays in business. Over the last couple of weeks, they've lost around 40% of their 'associates'.

Why?

Bad management. The stories I'm hearing about not only the store management, but the regional management makes me sick. I knew the manager of the Norton store was about as useful as tits on a boar hog, but I figured the regional people weren't bad. I was wrong.

Instead of addressing the problem, it seems the region is going to attempt to force everyone else to quit just so they don't look bad.

Don't be surprised if the Norton store gets a lot worse over the next few months. As long as the current management team is in place, that place is going to hell in a handbasket.

They treat their valued 'associates' like dogshit, then wonder why they quit.

Sort of like Applebees. My wife ordered out up there the other day and found fuzzy stuff and a fly in her salad. Called back to ask for a refund and they were okay with it.

I went to pick it up before work, and was given the run around wanting to know exactly what was on the order and then refunded in cash. First, their policy is to do it on a giftcard. Second, if someone found junk like that on their food, wouldn't you think you would try to make it up to them a little may give a $20 GC or something. If it wasn't for reffing buddies wanting to eat there, I wouldn't fool with them again till management changed. I reckon they have had people walking out on them as well.

I've eaten at that Applebee's twice. The first time was about a month after they opened. I had been on the lake all day and they were the only thing open when I got off the water. Perhaps 20 people in the place, the service was horrible.

Went back a few months ago, had the same ordeal. Almost ate there again a month or so ago, went in, sat down, took one look at the menu and realized that they had nothing that appealed to me.

A friend of mine, her husband was an assitant manager there, but has since switched to Lebanon because of how bad his direct management is in Wise. Heck, they live in Wise, and he can go to Lebanon, work and be home faster than he could when working at Wise because the rest sat around, and didn't do much apparently.

I avoid both places....but the Applebee's is the WORST I've ever eaten. Went there about 4 months ago and ordered Steak, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables...and it came with a dessert that had chocolate syrup on it, and finally a margarita. First of all the drinki was undrinkable...like they didn't dilute the mix or something...nasty..so i sent it back. I ordered the steak medium and it was charred...and the potatoes and veggies were both cold. When the dessert came out it they said they were out of chocolate syrup..so they just laid it down and left. But, I refused to pay for it and I'll not go back....

Sounds like my last time in there. Ordered a burger medium, they sent it out well done with more char than an Alaskan river.

I've stopped sending food back if for no other reason than I don't feel like eating some [censored]'s spit.

I've been known to get up and leave the food on the table on more than one occassion...I don't send back either...but I don't pay for it as well.

Both places are absolutely horrible...Applebee's food is just bland and the service sucks at most of them...and I haven't been past the front door of the Norton location.

Walmart...gosh, thats enough...I better just shut up now...

I never have had a problem at either place, maybe thats me.

I have never had a problem either. Beer is cold and the food is normally good when I eat at Applebee's. As for Wal-Mart, you just gotta pick the right times for it to be a pleasant experience. I normally go around 7:30 or 8:00 on Saturday or Sunday and it is practically empty.

I think some of you guys go into walmart with road rage. Practice a little patience and understand that it is what it is.

As for applebees, I think they hire too many college kids that while may be pretty and presentable, they dont have the work ethic of other people that may be a little rougher around the edges but will bust their butts to make customers happy.

As far as Bart getting transferred to Lebanon, puhlease, he owned his own business and sat on his hands while watching it go out of business.

I havent had too many problems with applebees but I have had friends that have had problems, especially when it gets busy.

I have a great solution for those who are complaining about both places......DON'T GO THERE ANYMORE!!

That would solve a lot of problems for both, the patrons and the businesses.

I really am dreading the reactions of the posters on this board when Sonic opens up.

As much as I like Sonic food, I'm going to do my arteries a favor and stay away!

I wouldnt say that, I go usually once a week and only once was a problem and that wasin the to go portion.

The only problem with wal mart is leave the one attendant for the self check outs, that would solve the only problem I have with that place. They close those to early.

So far, I've not really had a problem with Applebee's. I've had a few slow servers and such, but its generally been decent.

Walmart is Walmart. Honestly, they understaff the registers a lot of the time, but like someone said, that could be fixed by keeping the self checkouts open more.

You got that right, brother. The most of the times I've been in the Norton WallyWorld I've made the comment that they must be trying to be just like K-Mart. You know, the place that tries to get by with at most one cash register open regardless how many people are in the store or standing in line trying to checkout. After Ol' Sam passed away, customer service in general at his stores have literally nose-dived. Its all about the almighty dollar now and since they are so big it doesn't matter if they offend some customers 'cause they'll just go down the road a few miles and build another store just to spite you. OK, maybe that last part was a bit over the top and not all stores are as bad as others, but this would never have been allowed to happen when Sam was running the place.

Another aspect of you get what you pay for.

I guess that's a reasonable response, but a reasonable excuse? Don't think so. I'd love it if Target was a bit closer -- Good quality products at reasonable prices without most of the WallyWorld negatives IMO. Until some other retailer decides to come into this area and give this Walmart some real competition, they will have no incentive to improve customer service. But, I know this is probably unlikely. I don't think too many people actually complain about the pricing for the merchandise they handle, but I don't hear many positive comments about THIS Walmart in particular nor the entire chain as whole. Even the Magic Mart in Pikeville, KY (i know the one in Norton is way too small and with a terrible location) is a fairly decent alternative to the big chain stores, but I don't see them improving their presence here any time soon either. So, I guess we'll just have to "grin and bare it" so to speak since I don't foresee too many new options presenting themselves to this area in the immediate future.

And Walmart knows that they don't want any competition, which at least if talk is true, is why they prevented Target from even getting a snip on their old building.

It's the local way, build a new stripmall when you run out of space at the old one, let the old one turn into a dump.

I don't believe the talk is true.
That building is significantly undersized for Target - and they build their own (as wal-mart does)

But I agree - Target is better all around.
We've driven to Bristol more than once already to shop there.
And when Petsmart, Books-a-Million, Bed Bath & Beyond, and TJMaxx open, that'll be the last we see of Kingsport shopping (VA tax!).

I don't have a problem shopping at Wal Mart, my problem is with the way the company is run.

I think Target is run now the way Wal-Mart was once many years ago.

Now if there was a store I would ever profess hate for, it is Target.

I had a co-worker that stated she despised Target also. Turns out she only had the JC one as an example.... bad example! She likes it now that she has a newer one to go to.

I've been to Targets all over the south. I hate them all. If a store doesn't sell ammo or have a decent selection of lures, then I don't shop there.

Needless to say I spend a great deal of time at Colgard and M&M.

If they dont sell what you want, then you have no reason to shop there. Quite reasonable to not be a Target shopper.

And, it shows. Walmart's problems (and it ain't makin' money) begin with management at several levels including at the top and then trickles done to the pions. So, the customer service we receive or don't receive locally is a direct reflection of how the Walmart corporate entity now views its customers -- they no longer feel that its the customers that have built them up to where they are today and deserve some degree of respect. We are only herds of dollar signs to them now. Sure Sam was driven to be successful, but he went about it the right way and they've definitely lost sight of that fact. Shades of the fictional "OCP" corporate mentality from the old Robocop movies comes to mind. That may be a bit harsh, but if left unattended, who knows what the future might hold.

No reason for you to "hate" the place. It's just a place that doesn't carry some things you shop for a lot--that's all. As for clothes, other sporting goods, home stuff, some food, and electronics--it's a good store.

I don't shop a lot at Colgard or M&M because I don't shop for a lot of the things you shop for, but I don't "hate" those places.

You actually can afford to shop at Colgard? Unless the prices have dropped, you are better off ordering through Cabella's or other catalogs.

Yeah people on the internet have to hate on anything. Everybody hates on Walmart, so the sheep have to hate on something else.

Simple logic is Target is competition (something Kmart isn't) and its about the only thing that can cause Walmart to straighten up a few issues, lord knows that the customers complaining doesn't.

That may be the case. I have no idea on that side of things, but the manager now up here just isn't management material. The guy wouldn't even come up to me to apologize for what had happened or what. He had the person seating people handle it and just give me cash, which is pretty much a no no everywhere.

I wasn't necessarily defending Bart, just showing how pathetic things are up there now. I didn't have a problem with the place till now. Although I hadn't eaten in there much.

I guess it depends on who you are and what you need...I usually get great deals at Colgard, but don't know much about M&M...I know the Powder Keg used to be sky high...

Cabela's is rather high for my blood. Try the auction sight http://www.forthehunt.com for some of your ammo and other gun related needs, not to mention, great gun deals

Only problems I've really had with Norton walmart would be very minimal time an employee at the register was talking to someone and didn't acknowledge that I was ready to be checked out and that guy she was talking to had already checked out.

Another had nothing to do with the company. Just customers who run over ya. You will get that at times.

Other than those minor things I haven't had really any problem. It's not a bad store. Every store--both good and bad--has its flaws. If I really had a problem with a store then I just wouldn't go there and I'd go somewhere else.

If you all think that your WalMart is bad, try going to the one in Colonial Heights. They never have anything in stock, never do they have more than 4 registers open on either end, and they dont have self checkouts because their is so much theft. You all are lucky to have a Super Wal-Mart and all you do is complain. Would you rather it shutdown and go to the Wal Mart in Lebanon or Kingsport. It could be worse you could still be going to the landmark that is still in Big Stone.
