<span style='font-family: Arial Black'><span style='font-size: 11pt'>JI Burton vs Powell Valley</span></span>
This is my pick for Game of the Season. The 2006 Region D Div I and Div II champions head to head. Both teams are going into this game following open weeks. Lingering injuries hopefully have healed. JI Burton goes into the game 3-0, whereas Powell Valley is 2-1 following a disappointing loss to a very good Richlands team. Someone commented recently that this game would be won in the last two minutes of the game, and I wouldn't' be surprised if that is the case. I'm really not expecting a blow out for either team here. I think the edge goes to JI Burton. I would be surprised to see either team's secondary on the field Friday night. Regardless of the outcome, this should be an LPD classic.
<span style='font-family: Arial Black'><span style='font-size: 11pt'>JJ Kelly vs Grundy</span></span>
JJ Kelly bounced back from a crushing loss to JI Burton with a decisive win over Coeburn this past weekend. But the loss to JI Burton is still lingering on the minds of many in Wise. This past week, I had a conversation with a long time JJ Kelly supporter who was quite honestly disgusted over the fact that JJ Kelly didn't make a better showing against the Raiders. His comment to me was, "I know Norton is a better team, but I don't think they're 42 points better."? I think just about everyone can agree that JJ Kelly has improved and is still improving. The question remains: "how good is JJ Kelly?"? Grundy is a AA school, but has a lower enrollment than JJ Kelly. I've always thought Grundy was a difficult team to predict. I'm not sure how much of a challenge the Golden Wave will give the Indians, but I think JJ Kelly has the edge here. If Kelly can get another decisive win, this could be a confidence-boosting game for them. But, regardless, The Indians have to move on past the game against Norton and focus on the rest of the season.
<span style='font-family: Arial Black'><span style='font-size: 11pt'>Lebanon vs Clintwood</span></span>
It seems some people have lost confidence or changed their opinions about Clintwood after the 42-0 loss to Volunteer. I think a lot of people are still in shock. If Robinson is back and the Clintwood team is ready physically and mentally, I would give the edge to Clintwood. Yes, Lebanon has some talent and can challenge any Div II team in the Region. I'm probably putting too much emphasis on a pre-season Jamboree, but I wasn't overly impressed with Lebanon's performance against either JI Burton or William Campbell earlier this year. Now, they may surprise me and end up in the Region D Div II playoffs before its over. I think the game can go either way, and it depends on how prepared Clintwood is for this game. If the Wave are focused and motivated, they can come out on the other side of this game 3-1. If not, its going to be a long ride home from Russell County.
<span style='font-family: Arial Black'><span style='font-size: 11pt'>Gate City vs Appalachia</span></span>
When these two teams last met in 2006, it was on a muddy field on a night when most every other game in the LPD was cancelled because of heavy rains. Appalachia won the slobber-knocker 20-7. 2006 wasn't a good year for the Blue Devils. Gate City goes into this game following a tough 13-33 loss to Lebanon. Appalachia has been up and down with a tough loss to Norton earlier and a good win over Rye Cove last week. Momentum would seem to be going Appalachia's way again. But, I think Gate City wins this one in a closer game than many might think.
IMO, most of the games are tossups...but,Ok...here goes..
PV 21 - JIB 20 ..an LPD classic to be decided in the last 2 minutes.
Appy 15 - GC 14 ..Just have a gut feeling that Appy will find a way against a mediocre GC team.
Lebanon 22 - Clintwood 21 ..I hope Clintwood proves me wrong.
Kelly 35 - Grundy 28 ..could go either way, but I think Kelly has what it takes to win this one.
TW 15 - Coeburn 14 ..TW mashed up Ervinton while Coeburn struggled to win there. Plus, Kelly beat Coeburn like a drum.
I think you are right beast, all the games are close to a toss up. You bring up the TW/Coeburn game and mention Ervinton. The Ervinton/Coeburn game was played pretty cleanly, and then the Rebs turn around and fumble 9 times against TW. That gets you beat every time.
Yeah, but most of the time, fumbles can be attributed to the pressure or play of the opponent. So, I still give TW the nod.
True, but in mud and both teams being below average, usually the weather is a bigger factor than the opponent.
Burton 28
Powell Valley 20
Gate City 35
Appy 18
Lebanon 42
Clintwood 21
Kelly 32
Grundy 24
Coeburn 13
Thomas Walker 12
Well then, to make a comparison between the 2 games, both had to be played in mud. But, when the weather is sloppy, an opportunistic D creates more turnovers than the weather does.
True, thats why I am saying its not a completely even comparison. TW does like to rip for the ball though it probably lead to a few of those Reb fumbles.
JJK 42 - GRUNDY 14
BURTON 36 - PV 18
GC 63 - APPY 7

J.I.B 28 PV 14 -speed kills, and nobody on this end of the state (at very least) has as many burners as the Raiders. PV makes a good showing, but joins the others by the wayside.
Clintwood 21 Lebanaon 20- The Wave got a wakeup cal last week at Volunteer, and will be ready to go Friday night. They will certainly benefit if they have their ballcarrier back in the lineup.
Gate City 21 Appy 20- man this week is a brutal one to pick. I'm gonna miss a few I fear, and this one may be one of them.
VHS 21 Chilhowie 14- another tossup IMO
Coeburn 21 TW 14 -Bright will have a big night
JJK 42 Grungy 14-if you are picking the Urine Showers, I mean Golden Wave to either a) win this one or b) be a close game, then you are in for a letdown. Kelly by a bunch.
Im finding it hard to believe that so many people are predicting gate city over appy.
Leedy looked like a man against boys at gate city last year, and after seeing the blue devils practice a few times, I dont think they can tackle him. I've always respected gate city, but in all honesty, they looked better last year.
This is coming from a dawg fan who has been very unimpressed with our team so far this year. I may be wrong about this one to, but I just believe the dawgs will be able to pound the football up the middle and control the clock.
JIB 27 PV 13 the vikings are over rated cedric is way over rated and they dont give pinkston the ball enough
JJK 20 Grundy 14 should be a good game but having seen both neither can pass but kelly has a better running game
APPY 35 GC 17 the dawgs took it to the devils last year same thing this year
Clintwood 35 Lebanon 14 last week clintwood bit off a little more than they could chew but they are still in my opnion the best team in Div 2
Haysi 35 Honaker 21 red is better than everyone thinks and orange is average
