What kind of support are you seeing at games you attend? I really felt sorry for Coeburn tonight because the stands were almost empty. I am also sorry for the fact they have no band.
High school football should not be the primary focus in life but it does provide alot of fun memories for people. It was sad to see so few supporting the Blue Knights. I commend the fans who made the effort.
Oh lord, please don;t get me started on our sorry fans at PV again. Never get off their hands. I get so mad..I feel like its me and Chris are the only ones cheering sometimes.
Yeah, it was very sad for Coeburn, there were a lot of Burton fans commenting on the lack of turn out from a town that was only 10 miles away. The fact that they have no band is very sad. I feel that county schools should share equally. If you look at the band programs of pv, appy, wise, for example and then think about the fact that another school in the county can't even find a band director is very sad.
When you're winning, the fans are out in full force. When you are losing.....its a different story.
If I didn't go to football on Friday nights I would be lost. Yes I need a life but it is fun to support my team. Win or lose I am a fan and I think that's the way everyone should feel.
Well said 2019...... People come out from everywhere when you are winning. Norton is the same way, I remember about 4-5 years ago you would be lucky to fill the stands for the important games.
PV has decent attendance, but as Sam Cassell said about the Carolina fans, "They're a wine and cheese crowd".
Not trying to start anything....But PV fans seemed dead from the start tonight...I was scratchig my head wondering, they are usually supportive of the Vikes..
PV fans are always dead from the start...tonight was no exception.
Another piss poor road turnout from the "Kelly fans" in Clinchport. We were few and far in between.
Don't you know it takes 6 hours and two ferry rides to get to Clinchport?

I noticed the same thing last week when we played PV. I posted something on it last weekend. It is really odd because I remember when I was in school the fans were always so loud and supportive of PV. It was not like that this year for some reason. As for Coeburn I mentioned to someone else tonight that it looked like the only the parents of the players showed up tonight. As for the band or lack there of, I recall Clintwood was the first school last year that did not have a band. That is so sad, however I do remember reading in the papers a few weeks ago that there was a shortage of Band Directors in this are and that several schools were being forced to share Directors. It was in the Coalfield. It's such a sad comment on this area and the priorities of so many around here. I felt so sorry for those boys from Coeburn as they started out looking quite good in the first few minutes of the first quarter tonight. Especially when Burton fumbled the ball on their first possession. The Coeburn side was so quite. They made noise however due to the lack of people in the stands on their side, it was like a group of kids yelling at one their friends on the other side of the field. Perhaps we need to start getting adults involved more in cheering and supporting the teams in person, not just on here.
How was RCs crowd?
It was their homecoming and I thought they had a good fan support there.

Dickenson Co. schools made the regretable decision almost a decade ago to do away with all county band programs.
I am sorry I was mistaken then... I just remember last year at the Norton - Clintwood game I asked a CW Fan where their band was and they told me that they did not have one "this year" so I assumed it was a recent decision. It was the first time I noticed a band missing at a school. Do they plan on trying to get a band back together or is it completely gone?
When it comes down to it (and this is coming from a former band dork) band just isn't cool at all the county schools.
At Burton a lot of us weren't the coolest kids in the halls by any means, but the band never got ridiculed like they apparently did when I talked to people from other schools. I always felt like our athletes, especially the football team would be pretty supportive of us - even telling some us they loved it whenever we played certain songs and how much it pumped them up. I remember my 7th grade year when we won the Lonesome Pine Band competition, we had fans rolling out to football games just to see the band at halftime.
It's sad when you look at the situation across the county b/c when you'd talk to some of the old timers the LPD used to have days of big bands and whoa could you imagine that kind of atmosphere - it must have been like a college football games back then.
I can remember all during my time at Coeburn the band had 40-50+ members regularly, even had an electric guitar a few years and 2 one year.
At Burton now we have cheerleaders in the band and last year we even had football players as well. I remember being shocked when I saw the band at the Burton Wise game, I remember when Wise, Powell Valley, and Burton Dominated in size. There were more people at the Band Festivals than football games, some how it seems less important these days. It's truly a sad comment on this area. I fear that by the time my child reaches High School he may not have a choice, my oldest was able to do both at first, but when he got old enough to march they needed him to play football so he chose to do that only, but he did perform in concert band for a year or two. I never understood the ridicule that some kids received in school for being in the band. They work hard, they practice just as hard as athletes, they are just as dedicated and now halftime is simply dead. I pray that Burton does not lose their Band, the stadium would not be the same.

I don't think Burton will ever lose their band. Fan support is great, band parents are everywhere. There is no laughing at the band geeks, kids are not ridiculed for being in band. Cheerleaders love band, football players play in concert band, it's really great at Burton.
The Kelly band was the pride of the state back in the 80's and early 90's. When Lucian Priode got the shaft, the program went to hell in a handbasket. Way too many band directors to keep anything consistent. Donnie Sorah was doing a solid job, and he got screwed. It does seem that this director they have now has them turning in the right direction. The Pride of the Tribe sounded better this year (although the #s are still embarrassingly small)
At GC the drum line are the studs.
I remember Stpaul had a bass guiter. They would play another one bits the dust. It was killer. They only had about 10 band members in the band nd look ragtagged but it was cool to see.
I remeber back in late 70's the band was always big. Pretty much every school. I did not know some schools now dont have even a small band. Sad, for all. The band brings alot to all school functions.
Be cool to see each community have community bands. I would much rather see the school have bands and students be in them. But if whether do to lack of interest or support a school doesn't have one would be cool so see ex band folks set up shop and play. A football game without the band is very odd. Not talking about them marching and stuff just setting in the stand and playing.
pv fans are the best....cowbells and airhorns everywhere
We played PV for there homecoming in 2005-we had more fans there.
Last PV game I was at--last year playoff game vs. Clintwood--at some points it seemed like me and Chris Kelly were the only ones yelling for the team.

They're the best at walking out of a game and leaving your team with 2 minutes left down by one with two timeouts. Just like last night.
As for the Dickenson Co. bands, they weren't cut because of a lack of interest. The last band I remember Clintwood having had a decent amount of participation. I'd say 30+. The school board made the decision based solely on money.

But Yeah I rememeber a couple of times the band playing for us at practice. Of course it was certain songs, but it was cool. Also whoever made the comment about Burton having football players and cheerleaders in the band, well we always have had that. Is Stewart still the band director there?

indeed he has! I want to say since the late 80s perhaps. I think Mr. Tipton was the director there in about 1985..
Tipton left after my first year, so about 88, Mr. Stewart has been there ever since.

This was not always the case when Tipton was Director there weren't any football players marching in the band, I believe this came about when Stewart took over. When I was in school ( I am showing how old I am) you had to make a choice either football, cheerleading, or band...I think it's great they allow the kids to do more than one if they choose.
