Kelly Fans

I was really shocked to see the majority of the JJ Kelly fans still sitting down, in a tie ball game, in the 4th quarter and the PA announcer and the Kelly players on the sideline begging for the fans to get into, and yet most of the wise fans sat there like they had corn cobs up their butts! And what is with PV fans, they don't bring half as many fans to the games as they use to?

I think the the Kelly fans really let the team down by not showing anymore enthusiasm than they did.

And I can not believe that no one has posted anything about the no call on the pass interference when Lawson clearly hit Chris Strouth in mid air, long before ball got there. This was a crazy game, bottom line, Kelly was out-coached and may have had one call that should have gone their way, go the other. The stripes were tuff on PV tonight, but were easy at the end, there should have been a flag.

If anything, that was interference on Strouth, Lawson had position on the ball. Strouth ran into him

In HS football, you can't get yourself in a 4th and long hole and hope the refs bail ya out. The ball was up for grabs and both made a play...could've gone either way. I thought it was a good no call.

where you sitting? Strouth was in the air with ball coming, he was facing the ball, and lawson jumped up and hit strouth, before the ball got there, PV's coached admitted the got by with one an that one

Kelly fans and PV fans are the LPD's biggest embarrassment. They are 2 peas in a pod. Seems like church more than football to them.

Actually I was at the fence in front of the scoreboard...and it happened right in front of me. You can't hope the ref bails ya out come desperation time. Both made a play...and the refs let the players decide it...something they should do more often.

Actually i was setting on the 35 yard line top bleacher and the play was right in front of me.. Lawson was in front of the defender and against him... then strouth pushed off on lawson and that is why the ball went over his head... He had his hands down.

But here is the worst call of the night... It was both the officals and kelly's coaching staff's fault.

Not pulling #2 after he was tackeled on the bootleg on kelly's last drive of the 4th. The kid was very shaken up, twice he stood bent over trying to clear the cob-web's after each play. He should have been pulled for his saftey.

Matt is tough, if he had needed to come out, he would have. BI knows this, he would NEVER endanger one of his kids. And as far as our announcer goes, we like him. He is a parent and a huge fan. He gets very enthusiastic when it comes to football, and if he can get some of those dead heads off their butt, so be it.
We did not get out played, or out coached. We have the best coach in the county, and in the years to come, everyone is going to know it. Enjoy your pathetic, unearned victory, we've got a lot of good years coming.

pathetic unearned victory? Seems to me anytime a teams wins a close one they earn it...Pv played a hair better it seems..why u ask...They won.

Thats fine to get enthusiastic...but sit in the stands and do it. Announcers are supposed to be UNBIASED and not try to give the home team an advantage by calling out the plays and fumbles DURING the play.

and concerning injury...I thought there was a VHSl rule or something that if I player got hurt, they had to sit out atleast one play...or is that something coaches/refs do on a personal option?

There is, IF time is called to assist the player. The JJK's QB took a hard hit, and was shaken, but got up and proceeded to the huddle. The officials stopped him, im assuming to ask if he was ok, and play continued.
Even though it wasnt in the rules to make him leave the game...i agree, he should have left or the coach should have had him come over for one play at least. It was obvious he was a little fuzzy on the next play.

Wise's PA guy is the most annoying I've ever heard.

This is exactly what happened to Hunnicutt from Burton, no one caught it. The film shows that he took a blow to the jaw, his knees buckled and he continued to stay in the game for another play. He did not answer the Ref. and stayed in for another play. Now his parents, Coaches, and Doctors are not even sure if he can come back this year or not. He spent two days in PICU at JCMC, after having his "Bell Rung". He had no clue what his his last name was, where he was, only that he needed to finish the game. Often with hard blows to the head that person is not aware of what has happened and will continue to do what they are "programmed" to do so to speak.

I do believe there should be some sort of rule that the officials stop and have a member of the coaching staff come out and speak with the player in question. They will know better than the officials if the kid is fine or should be pulled for a while.

I recently read an article on the "myths" of helmets. Too often these days kids feel invincible when wearing football helmets. They feel and are told they can not get hurt on head to head contact while wearing a football helmet. This is completely false, too often the helmets are poor fitting and are unable to protect players to the fullest. Kids will hit harder when they feel they are protected, they feel like nothing can hurt them. They fail to realize that this jars their brain. It causes the brain to roll to the front of the skull and then back against the back of the skull.

"Getting your bell rung" can have serious complications and can lead to early retirement from High School Football. I think there should be more precautions on the part of the Officials on the field, Coaches are depending on them to notify them if a player is a little dazed or fuzzy after a play. Because the effects of a blow to the head are not often readily visible, I feel it should be the duty of the Officials to remove a kid from play for at least two to three plays, no matter the circumstances.

That is just my view on the situation.

Of course no coach or official would purposefully put kids in danger.

There's a lot they (coaches and medical professionals) don't know about when it comes to head trauma (there's even a fresh field of study regarding brain injuries in war vets). Unless they're unconscious a kid will almost always tell their coach they're fine and try to shake it off. Like in the line above "Matt is tough" - this type of thinking doesn't help at all. Kids know people think this of them and will do everything in their power to act like they're not hurt (because they're 'tough').

yankeefanz4life is absolutely correct - that helmet may protect a kid from injuring their head/skull to some degree but it in no way shape or form protects the brain. Brain injuries happen when the brain is jarred and hits the skull. The thinking that the helmet is protective encourages the kids to hit harder, which in turn causes more brain injury.

I've read some articles on concussion/brain injury recently. If I can dig them back up again I'll post them.

Where is it wrote that a PA is supposed to unbiased?

Put a doctor on the sidelines with each team, put an end to a lot of this. When I played we had normally two to three doctors on the sidelines there was never a question of whether somebody with a concusion went back in the game. The doctor decided, Spurlock got a concussion in the state game and wasn't allowed to play anymore. To this day that is the worst thing I've ever seen in sports, never felt so sorry for a guy in my life.

That is right I can remember when Burton had a doctor on the field a few years back. Whatever happened with that?

That is an excellent idea, I had forgotten that they used to do that.

When #2 got hit last night he was on the way down when he took a helmet shot to the jaw...and his head bounced off the turf. He was in lala land. He got up and was walking towards the endzone when one of his teammates walked him back towards the huddle. Surprised me that PV called a timeout before the next play.

Oh my gosh, well I will certainly pray he is OK, I hope they get him checked out and keep a close eye on him over the next few days. I heard Hunnicutt was still having headaches and began throwing up three days after.

At that point someone should have stepped in and made him come out especially if he was that disoriented. If they see it happen on the sidelines then the coaches should also call time if the officials do not.

I read an article about a kid from Texas who recently collapsed on the football field went into a coma and then died, the cause of death was a bleed on the brain he received two weeks prior during a head to head collision.

It's a really scary thing. If you hear anything about that kid let me know.

Clintwood has had Dr. Alderman on the sidelines for over 30 years now. When he takes a week of vacation every fall Dr. Lyall always fills in.

By rule if we suspect that a kid is hurt or unable to perform we are to stop the game and get the kid out or have a coach attend to him. If we feel that a kid has been knocked out due to a hit to the helmet we are required to have a doctors signed statement releasing the kid to come back into the game. I always error on the side of caution. If a kid takes a nasty shot to the helmet I always check him. If I feel that he is the least bit incoherent then I get him out of the game. I had a kid at the Cove get hit and it knocked him out. I informed the coach that if he were to return I have to have a signed statement from a doctor. An MD not a dentist or other doctor.

The kid last night brought to mind a kid at Pound 2 years ago when they played PV... Don't know the kids name but he wore #12. He got hit on a kickoff and was visibly dazed. He stayed out for O and put the ball on the ground after another hard hit. And he kept coming back...but you could tell he wasn't all there. And I can't remember his coach pulling him. And he appeared to be in bad shape. In a case like that, if a coach isn't going to pull a kid, the refs should.

Some articles on concussions (cant yet locate all the exact ones I had read recently - some dealt with concussions in females, and in other sports such as basketball and soccer).
In summary, what these articles are saying is that concussions are often looked over or dismissed, especially if there's no loss of consciousness. There just needs to be more head-injury education for all those on the sidelines, kids included.

We use to have a dr. on the field with us. Don't know what happened to that. I know Dr. Basham's son plays little league, may have to talk him into being on the sidelines.

At one time PV had 3 on the sidelines...I can remember being stitched up and seeing others get the same thing right there on the bench.

There needs to be more done, so often it is over looked. Waved off as "getting your bell rung" shake it off and you will be fine. It is more life threatening than anyone knows. It's definitely life altering.

If you have any doubt, just ask someone who has had one, if you know the right questions to ask you may even surprise them at how serious it was.

It doesn't really get any better in college football. I'm watching the UT/MSU game and they confirmed that MSU's qb has a concussion, they still put him back in the game.

See I do not understand that. Is it best not to pull a player, even if it means losing that game? Would it not be better to take a minor set back right now than to risk any long term loss?

Do they think that the opposing team is going to take it easy on the guy with the concussion? No they are going to go after the weaker player and take him out of the equation completely.

Looks to me like this question should not even have to be asked.
