Good Radio Stations

Coming home for my 20-year reunion this weekend and need a good 80's, 90's, and today radio station. The ones I listen to fade out around Marion. Any suggestions?

99.1 fades out closer to Abingdon sometimes. After that it's 98.5 and 94.9. Not the best, but it's about all we've got!

Usually around Marion you can pick up 98.5 WTFM out of Kingsport for that type of music. Around Bristol 104.9 out of Kingsport starts to come in clear. Same format.

Q99 out of Roanoke comes in almost to Abingdon.

What kind of music are you wanting to listen to, country, rock or what?

Channels 7, 8, 9, 23, 54

For classic rock 101.5, 103.5, for more modern rock 95.5 or 99.3

We need a good rap station, seriously though have fun for the reunion. I've only been out 3 years and I could imagine seeing some of the people I went to school with.

Yeah, that format would get great numbers in this market. ;)There are some 'urban' stations that fade in and out occasionally.

This area has become something of a radio dead zone. 104.9 used to have a strong signal, now it is barely audible once you cross the TN/VA line. The same goes for 94.9.

In this area, if you aren't listening to 98.5, 96.9 or 101.5, you might as well forget about good reception. Not that satellite radio is any better...

Get satellite radio, terrestial radio is awful now.. You want rock you got rock, rap, sports county, talk whatever you want its there..

XM the only way to go. Took me a while but finally talked Bob into getting one now he is talkin about getting another.

I've never found one station on either Sirus or XM that I could listen to for more than 15 minutes...same ol mainstream BS on nearly every station..even the ones that don't play "pop" still don't play anything hardly that appeals to me.

As much as I hate rap, a station that carried it would do well among young people around here.

I hate being in a vehicle that doesn't have satellite radio for very long.

Radio around here is atroshish (don't know how to spell that but it sounds appropriate). I have had an XM radio since they first hit this area, thanks to a buddy of mine who worked at Crutchfield at the time, I think he still does actually. The radio stations around here don't play the music I generally listen too so I am either listening to XM (30% of the time) or my iPod (70% of the time) in my car.

I've considered getting satellite now that I travel between the Tri Cities and the New River Valley more often. I always start listening to a program in one place and lose the signal halfway up the interstate.

Aren't there reception issues with satellite if you use an FM frequency or something like that?

I have never had too much trouble out of mine. The only time my satellite goes out is around Speers Ferry in Scott County or anytime I am right up on a high wall or large mountain.

You may be referring to the wireless FM modulator 89bluedevil. You do lose sound quality, but in this area it isn't that bad for being run over by other signals. When you go to Atlanta, or even PF/Knoxville you can get some interference. The best thing to do is get a hardwired FM modulator if you don't have an auxiliary input, or a direct connect tuner. You wont have the interference issues then.

As for the satellite signal, is very rare to lose it. I lose it for a second in Clinchport everyday due to the foliage overlapping the road, but only heavy foliage or driving up against a cliff or something tends to block the signal.

I don't have any problems with the built in FM transmiter on my XM. If you find that you don't like it or have a problem you can go to Adams Friendly Tires up in Wise and they can fix you up pretty cheap compared to most places.

Well, the newer units are worse than the old ones. The FCC made them tone down the strength of the transmitter.

My XM is built in my car, so i don't know anything about transmitters..

but I do hate the FCC and i'm glad that XM is not sanctioned by it.. Terrestrial radio just can't compete with Cds iPods and satillite radio.. its just fading into the darkness
