Things are not like they used to be.
Things around powell valley just isn't like they use to be. Talking to a gentlemen today about how when he played at wise just the color of the jersey was intimidating, they knew they had a tough, hard hitting game to be played.
These seniors from this team their record together has been very hard to swallow.
0-3 vs Burton
1-1 vs Breathitt
0-2 vs Seymour
2-2 vs Clintwood
0-1 vs Richlands
4-1 vs Gate City (including losing a 6 game win streak to this team)
They have managed to not win one LPD title, lost 2 Region D titles, and gotten the "mercy rule" enforced against them before halftime in semi- state.
Were truly not what we once were and it's not looking like we are going back anytime soon. Congrats to Region D Div 1 Clintwood Green Wave and also to Region D Div 2 Gate City Blue Devils. Your hard work has paid off for you, good luck in the state playoffs.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
i was thinking the same....no championships for pv this year.
the vikes had very good skill people, but lacked the size and athleticism up front. i don't think you can blame the seniors though cause they just didn't have it up front and championships are won the line of scrimmage. they did give it their all, but face it....this team was not one of the teams of old, nowhere close.
i can't see any possible state titles in their future. same for burton, losing stewart will be huge, huge, huge.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
IMO, PVs loss today will help the program IF it moves them out of the spread offense. GC got down and rolled the PV O and D lines...and that goes back to the philosophy that the low hat wins. And, you can't be the low hat when you start a play from a 2 point stance as a lineman. GC did it the old fashioned way...proving once again that a run based offense is the way to win championships. PV will reload and be back...but hopefully not in a finesse based incarnation.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
The seniors on that team did what not seniors since the Jones brothers teams had done. Play in 4 consecutive Region D finals, they won the LPD in 04 and went 6-1 against GC. Played in two state final fours. Pretty comparable to what Norton has done and it's viewed as their greatest run ever, some people need to tone the expectations down a bit. I dont see Thomas or Julius walking through the door up their at PV, or Forty Jackson either for that matter.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Forget the spread, get back to basics, and find someone who can motivate the kids.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
The truth is, until about 12 years ago, PV had no 4 year seniors, cuz you weren't varsity til 10th grade. Before the teams that featured the Joneses, PV played a hard nosed game with half the talent of this year's team but 3 times the football players. Maybe you can't remember that, or teams stepping on the field against teams from upstate that were bigger and faster...and overcoming and winning. I cut no slack to PV cuz they have been to 2 state final fours or anything else. I played with a group that couldn't compete with this year's team in a track meet, but would destroy them on the gridiron. Hell, my bunch only had 3 varsity years, and brought home 2 trophies will less athletic talent. So, I cut PV no slack...but that's how it is.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Since 05 we've had the smallest teams I can remember, granted I've only been following PV football since 94. Realistically to me we should contend for the LPD/Region D title. Which I think we do, winning state titles require great skill and luck. How many teams have done what PV has done since Julius left? PV people complain about we've done since then but really is there another school in D2 that has done that in Region D? D2 is a different animal today, for the kids today to win they have to beat teams that were in AA back in the 80's. Dont get me wrong they should be A but we were it, back then. Today Giles/GC/Gretna/etc are down from the AA ranks to single A.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
There has been a definate change in the PV program since Barry Jones left. And not a change for the better.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
I wish PV fans would lay off that, Coach Jones in my opinion is a great coach. However at the same time, if we so great wouldn't he be GC's Defensive Coordinator?
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Realistically what do you guys expect out of our program? As in how often do you expect LPD/Region/State Titles?
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
we love coach jones but we hate zone blocking ...You all know and I know that FB teams can be measured at PV and GC regardless of the coaches.

So, you're oblivious to Scott Co. politics, huh?
But speaking of Barry: Intrinsic qualities he brings to a program: rapport with his players, and a definite relationship; the ability to motivate a team; the desire and ability to teach the fundamentals. All these factors have been missing since he left, and will continue to be missing until he, or someone with his skills, is added to the PV staff.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Gas used to be cheaper. PV Made the LPD proud. For alot of years.

That zone blocking looked pretty good tonight!
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Im not oblivious to anything.. But the kids are the ones who play pv has a coach that knows how to win and so does GC both Hall of Famers I think COach Jones is OL up here and I played against Him 89 through 92
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Dude, check and see who the reply was to before responding. Never said you were oblivious.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
yeah everytime we play like we shoud .we win .GC blocking not zone. That only works when people dive at your linemen
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
So, let me get this right boney you feel that fundamentals are not being taught at PV? How much motivation does one need for a Region D title game? If one needs motivation for that do you really think you should send that player on the field? Everyone on here from PV has complained, well what is the solution?
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
No, I personally know the fundamentals aren't being taught at PV. All one has to do to know that is attend a practice. Secondly, and this is probably where lots of folks may disagree, but I believe it to the depths of my being: a coach absolutely must build a relationship with his players. Such a relationship must be outlined and developed from the beginning, and is absolutely necessary before a coach can effectively discipline a player. A coach must care more about the academic and overall well-being of the kid beyond the ball field or court. This is needed before a kid can/will ever have any respect for a coach. Did you witness any emotion and excitement from the PV players tonight? Any tears when they got beat? Any excitement before the game? Merely going through the motions. Sideline looked like soldiers tonight - no expression of excitement (from both coaches and players). To me, it's all about RELATIONSHIP, as is all of life. Mutual support, mutual discipline, mutual respect. And the above hasn't been a tirade againsy PV - I see the deficiencies throughout society and families. That's my 2 cents worth. Sorry for the preaching.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
PV does the same drills today they did 20 years ago. The only thing I wish they did more, and I'll be honest I've not been to a practice since 2004. I just dont have the time/desire to be there, I would give anything to just be allowed to go and ask questions. As far as learning the game I dont know of a local high school coach that could teach you more. Things must have changed a whole whole lot in three years, because when I was there coaches were easily accessible to talk to about anything. I personally had very personal talks with Tim Thomas and Fred Crabtree a lot. The PV coaching staff works as hard as any staff I know. The film study/Sunday Meetings/weight room after and before school. Go by PVHS and during football season I can bought guarantee you some coach will be in that field house.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Can't/won't argue with you, but life's far more than wins/losses, performance on the field, etc. Teach the kids character, motivate them to always strive for the best, teach them to be a team player, the importance of mentor/mentoree, etc. These lessons are for life, and can effectively be taught through the discipline of football. And even though you've only been out of HS a few years, trust me when I say that the lives of our teens are changing daily at an almost exponential rate - and these changes are for the worse in most instances. You played with one young man who was a stellar player, and IMO, the coaching staff allowed him to fall through the cracks. And that's the crap that really sets me off. And the reason I'm so adamant about teaching these young men the lessons that are bigger than life - just use the practice field as the classroom.

Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Central of Lunenburg was the Giles/Gretna/GC/Goochland team of their day...they dropped in 80 and for a 10 year stretch, I don't know that they didn't go to the finals. Saying so and so dropped is no excuse...D2 hasn't changed much...but the heart and want to of the players has...along with the coaching philosophy. Look at the 10 years prior to the Joneses and the 9 years since...there is no comparison. BTW Thomas and Julius came to be after PV was already a dynasty. As far as Barry goes, he was the best coach I ever played for...and if PV is teaching the same things they were 20 years ago, the Oline would be lining up in a 3point stance and drive blocking...and they haven't done that for 4-5 years.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
He's right about the teaching part.Life can be like fb in alot of ways.IF you ever played YOU KNOW.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Oh yes, I agree 110% heart and work ethic has a lot to do with it. At the same time if your coaching the group of guys that were on that team, would you really be wanting to line up and run the ball? I wouldn't, we went to that offense because we had the best QB we'd had since Duncan and great skill players. If we get a line a fully support returing to the running sets. As for boney some responsibilty falls on the shoulders of the parents, a coach can only do so much.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
That's the smallest PV line I've ever seen. They don't have a single dominant OL that you'd imagine ever being a better than average run blocker.
A side note, that game tonight changed when Pinkston went out.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
True, a coach can only do so much...but do that "much" and nothing else can be expected of him. Yes, the bulk of the load falls on the shoulders of the parents, but parents aren't invited onto the field, and that's the jist of this discussion.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
PV has never had a QB to compare with Duncan. But yeah, I'd have taught them the ol I and option out of it...along with the bootleg passes, and potshots down the field. You have a QB built for it, a good FB..various options at TB and WR..and you'd have an aggressive OL...there is no doubt they would have went farther that way.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
pvfan, good talking to you today and thanks for supporting us
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
I know of a PV OL that averaged 225 tackle to tackle...size means nothing.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
It means a lot when you don't have any tenacity and not a lot of skill. You were on and played with an average line that was 225 that had talent and some get up and go. They don't have that this year. They're about middle of the pack in the LPD as far as OL goes. I know what it means to play small. I was all district at guard in a year that PV and Appy both won state and I weighed 180. I'm in no way saying you can't be small, Appy alone has proved that, you just have to have some talent and a lot of desire.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Lol...you were 25 lbs bigger than me as a Senior..and I was a center...I know all about gettin your head across, putting a shoulder pad on a thighpad and driving..lol
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
You need to go show some of those fellows in the Carolina blue some techniques.

Really, I thought everyone who put on cleats knew that stuff...lol
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
I agree...apparently they don't teach it anymore. But, in all fairness it's had to do from a 2 point stance..lol
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
I'd say. I'd have hated playing out of a 2 pt stance.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
Unless you're 250-300 it'd be damn near impossible in the LPD to do it and be good.
-
Re: Things are not like they used to be.
PVFan, to compare what Pv seniors did to norton is atrocious. I can tell you what Pv fans expect, we expect what he got from the time Coach Boling won the first state title to when we won our last in '98. We expect to at least get to state every four years.
And with the current coaching staff it is simply not a reality. Coach Thomas, Coach Chandler they are both probley really good people but they are not the quality coaches we expect. When you have coaches that are humiliated at times during games when the head coach sends them to the sideline during critical timeouts insted of letting him coach his defense. When that coach walks back to the sideline with his head down like a scolded child, how do you expect these young men to respect and look up to these coaches?
This year we have had the most natual talent that we have had in years at PV, and none of them knew anything about playing football! Our receivers did not know how to run complete routes, our offensive line was getting blown off the ball against any good team we played, and out qb or lack there of could not make a read on defense coverage if his life depended on it. One can go the this years 4 int clintwood game and saturdays 3 int game against GC for conformation.
We need a coach like Barry Jones to get PV back to the storied program that we once where. A coach that as a player you work so hard to earn his respect and a pat on the back from him is worth way more than any newspaper or highlites tonight time. A coach that makes you be in the weight room all during the summer if you want to play, and dosen't give over starting postions just because of who you or your family are. You earn your position on first day of pratice in pads.
This group of powell valley seniors have soley relied on what the PV teams of the past have done, the legacy that we all left behind. They have truly tarnished the programs reputation with their lazyness, off the field antics, and their unaccountabliy of representives of the school.
