Hawks win regional championship

Gretna settled its account with Goochland Friday night and earned a berth in the Group A, Division 2 football final four.

The Hawks, ahead only 12-7 at the half, scored early and often in the last two quarters to cage the Bulldogs 52-14 in the Region B final.

The win ended Goochland's 25-game winning streak, and earned Gretna (12-0) a trip to King William High School (7-5) for a state semifinal game Saturday. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.

Gretna's win over the defending Group A, Division 2 champs paid the Bulldogs back for last year's 6-0 win.

"I would have taken 15-14," said Gretna coach Chris Thurman. "I'm happy with the score."

Gretna wasted no time putting points on the board. Ten seconds into the game at Lester Bond Field, Gretna had a 6-0 lead, thanks to Theo Miller's 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Taking the low, angled kick on the Gretna side of the field, Miller found an opening and sprinted to the end zone.



"To open up the game like that, it was huge for us," Thurman said.

Tyon Bennett said Miller told him he was going to run the kick back.

"He made a statement on the first play," Bennett said.

Goochland coach Joe Fowler said special teams hurt his Bulldogs, who finished the year 11-1.

Miller, a senior, was hurt later in the game. He was on the bench with ice on an ankle. Whether he'll play Saturday wasn't clear Tuesday.

Gretna increased the lead to 12-0 in the second quarter as freshman quarterback Nick Miller dove into the end zone from two yards away. Miller had hit Stephon Jennings on a 24-yard pass to open the drive.

For the game, Miller completed 12-of-17 passes for 147 yards and one score. He ran for 65 yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns.

"He was a good manager," Thurman said of Miller. "Now he can come out and lead."

"It feels great. I have a lot of seniors around me," said Miller, when asked about being a first-year quarterback of a team only two wins from a state title.

Gretna's second touchdown came after Bryant Vennable pulled the ball out of M.J. Cox's arms and recovered the fumble.

Goochland had several scoring opportunities ended by turnovers. Kevin Dale intercepted a pass in the end zone. Devonne Keen and Kell Stone also recovered fumbles.

Fowler said the turnovers were uncharacteristic for his team.

Thurman gave credit to his defense.

"We played like we normally do. Our defense has been pretty aggressive and physical all year long."

The Bulldogs scored just before halftime when D.J. Coles, who's bound for Virginia Tech, went around left end for a 10-yard touchdown. Cody Simmons added the extra point.

It didn't take the Hawks long to take control after halftime. Only 19 seconds into the third quarter, Gretna scored again.

After Goochland couldn't handle the kickoff, the Hawks took over at the Bulldog 43. Miller passed to Zach Dalton, who caught the pass, spun around and headed to the end zone. He was caught at the four. Miller then ran into the end zone on the next play to make it 18-7.

Stopping the Bulldogs, including a two-yard loss by Coles on a hit by Tyron Haskins and Kwame Berger, the Hawks needed only five plays before Miller scored again, this time from a yard out.

Five minutes into the third quarter, Gretna was up 24-7.

Coles sprinted 71 yards to cut the lead to 24-14, but the rest of the night belonged to the Dogwood District and Region B champion Hawks.

Bennett broke through the line and ran 18 yards for a touchdown. Jennings caught the two-point conversion pass to increase the lead to 32-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Bennett finished with 118 yards on 13 carries and two scores.

The senior back said he'd gotten a lot of rest and ate a lot of turkey for Thanksgiving.

"Think that's what did it," Bennett said with a smile.

In the fourth quarter, Miller's pass was tipped by Goochland's David McKenna into Dalton's arms for a 28-yard touchdown. That made it 38-14.

"Zach played a heck of a game," Thurman said.

Dalton, Jennings and Jayme Barksdale had two catches each, while Bennett had four. Vennable and Theo Miller had one each.

The fumble bug hit Goochland again as Lloyd Taylor coughed up the football and Bennett recovered at the 15.

Miller scored on the next play and Stone kicked the extra point to make it 45-14 midway of the final quarter.

Bennett scored the final touchdown with about two minutes left on a two-yard run.

"365 days we waited. This one was sweet," Keen said.

Saturday's semifinal opponent, King William, was runner-up to Colonial Beach in the Tidewater District. The team started 1-5, and is on a six-game winning streak.

"This team has come together and is playing as a unit," Dan Jones, the school's athletic director said.

The Cavaliers use a mixture of pass and run on offense. Players to watch include quarterback Lewis Redman, receiver Michael Williams, running back Clinton Hill and tight end/linebacker Kevin White. Head coach is Roger Brooks, who has more than 250 wins at King William.

King William High School is about 35 minutes northeast of Richmond on Route 30.

Tickets are $8.

Hawks receive regional awards

The Gretna Hawks' football team continues to rack up awards.

Devonne Keen was named the regional Defensive Player of the Year. He also received first-team linebacker honors.

Chris Thurman was named Division 2 Coach of the Year.

Tyon Bennett was named to the first team as a running back. Theo Miller was awarded first-team wide receiver, defensive back and kicker returner.

Tyron "Tootie" Haskins was named to the first team as an offensive guard and a defensive tackle.

Bryant Vennable was also on the first team at defensive back. Bennett Fulper was named the first-team center.



Nick Miller was named the second team's quarterback and Ethan Winn received second-team honors at offensive tackle.

gc may very well lose, but they alot of tradition in that program. they will not lay down for gretna. if they lose, i'll say it will be by no more than 14 points. i look for a good showing from the devils.

35-0 Gretna, it will take a miracle for GC to stay in this game. When was the last time a Region D team beat a Region B team? I know we've lost 5 in a row and it very well could be more.

Gretna blows GC away.

According to the roster, the QB Miller is only 157lbs. It'll be interesting to see how he holds up when GC pops him a few times.

One must catch before one can pop.

If Gretna's team thinks this way they could easily get beat. Gate City will have a ton of pride.

Pride will get stomped on Saturday.

This game seems to be David vs Goliath, but what happened to the unbeatable Giles?? GW beat them. What happened to the unstoppable Burton Raiders?? Cwood stopped them. Gretna CAN be beat, will Gate City do it?? They have to play perfect and hope for some help with turnovers mistakes etc.

Looks like he has the line to protect him and have done a pretty good job at it so far....

I hope all SWVA teams bring back the gold. With that being said, there`s a difference between those games listed above and the GC Gretna game.
Giles everyone should have seen coming. They are so one dimensional that it had to happen. A team finally got smart and lined up 10 people on the line of scrimmage.

And the Burton CW game really wasn`t a david/goliath matchup. Everyone I talked to leading up to that game said that they thought Clintwood was actually the better team.

With that being said this game is not like either of those 2. This Gretna team is truly a goliath, and they are definately not one demensional. GC will have to get on them early and keep pouring it on. Anything can happen in one game though so we will just have to wait til Saturday to find out.

i think GC will run through that 'dog soldier' D like it was a wet cardboard box - just like they did to all those over rated LPD schools. just my opinion.

Obviously you care because you continue to respond, I just don't think they have much of a chance. If I'm wrong I'll be on here Sunday. Your right I didn't pick GC to get out of the region, I was wrong on that one. I do still have 4 of my 6 state championship teams still playing with all 4 favorites in their game.

They beat PV fair and square. However they didn't exactly run over PV. PV ran all over them in regular season.

I'd like to see 3 state champions but I don''t think GC will beat Gretna.

I don't think people are giving GC the credit they deserve, They've lost 3 games, one early in the season to the D3 state contender and 2 games to Play-off teams, which they avenged.

Gretna may beat Gate City, I do not think they will do it though.

GC ran all over PV in 6 of the 8 quarters they played. like i said, just my opinion.

I watched both games...and GC did exactly literally RUN all over PV...they couldn't cover the pass in game 1 and lost...but they ran well in both games..dominatingly well in game 2.

I think PV has more talented players than GC. I think Gretna may have more talented players than GC. But GC just found a way to win vs. PV and made the plays when they had to and honestly wanted it more. Teams that play hard and play together have a chance. That is why this team has a chance Saturday.

That being said Tyler Parks has carried this team on his back the last part of the year. That is not saying the other kids haven't played better. They have. Starting up front on both sides of the ball. But to win Saturday someone else will have to come up with a play or two. But I look for that to happen. I don't see GC getting blown out in any Championship game.

If GC can grind it out..talent is out the window...at that point it's a battle of wills.

I havent seen either team play but it sounds like GC is big and strong and Gretna is small and fast if GC can grind it out on offense and force a few turnovers they can win

Nope..and I'll tell you why. One game in no way shape or form dictates the best way to win a football game. I have my beliefs set in tradition and experience...and wheter GC beats Gretna or not, that isn't going to change. PV has tried to "evolve"...and all that has happened is that they "evolved" into a regional power where they were once a state wide power.

agreed, no single games does show the best way to win a game, however, one shouldn't be like biggin and boast about a 40 point win, and when/if they lose, come back with excuses about how they were wronged(much like some leb fans did when we stomped them a few saturdays ago). I'm not saying biggin has done that or is doing that, just as to why I will say I was wrong if GC loses, however large or small the chance of that is.

Yeah..and the spread won't get em back there either. A good O doesn't have to be 3 yards and a cloud of dust..but hell, I'd take that even over the spread. The reason PV has no linemen that can run block is because they have not been coached to run block. Why?..because of the system they are in which totally ignores the importance of good run blocking. If ya ever get a chance, look at some PV films from 82, 85, 89, 90, 94, 95, 97, or 98...and tell me that O is 3 yards and a could of dust....that o was nothing but an impending a$$kicking.
