Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Where they asked to move to the LPD in 09. John Battle is also asking to be moved to Region C. Both are pretty crazy requests imo, why should Grundy play in the LPD when they have a single a district in their own county? I dont understand why JB would be granted a move to region C either, if that happens the whole CMD could just go up in smoke. Lebanon and VA High are as close to Region C as JB is.
I dont see the LPD supporting this to much, thats asking a lot for kids to travel 4 hours on a bus in the middle of the week for a game. In a bus to Grundy is right around 2 hours for most schools in this district (with the exception of Pound and Clintwood). Outside of Football I dont see much attendance of a LPD game in Buchanon County. BDD seems like a much better fit to me, not sure how the Hurley's and Councils of the world would accept it but geographically it makes sense. It would also give the BDD another school that competes in football and would make the district somewhat more competitive in that sport.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Another thing I just thought about, Grundy could go from a AA school to a D1 school. Not sure of their exact enrollment but could they petition on the same basis that CW and others have?
I just looked it up they have right around 500 students, a pretty set D2 school.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Just an opinion. They have other sports that they could compete with in the LPD like wrestling, girls basketball. I would want to move to a power district like the LPD instead of the weak BDD. Haysi and Honaker...that's it. Oops sorry, is it Twin Valley? They are supposed to be pretty good in basketball. That is it. I guess they want to do it for competition in other sports.
I heard Haysi had trouble scheduling outside their district and that is why they had to play those weak teams from KY and W.Va and it hurt their power points. Another school in the LPD would mean one less team we would have to worry about scheduling. Clintwood also had trouble with scheduling that is why Volunteer was added.
That is a lot of traveling for Grundy, but I guess they already figured out the logistics.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
I'm not really looking to drive from Big Stone to Grundy on a Tuesday night for an LPD game. You'd have to leave school early on a bus to play a conference game.
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
The LPD is big enough as it is. If they did join RD, there would be no reason for them to go anywhere but the BDD.
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
It's going to be interesting I dont see how the Southwest can stay as it currently is. Grundy, Tazwell, and Grahm can all play A ball, Richlands is not far behind. If those 4 schools drop down Coeburn, Castlewood, and Clintwood will no longer have to petition to play down and Honaker would join D1 as well. Which would lead to the same problem we currently have, Grundy would then become the only D2 school in the BDD. I wish they'd just take the current single A schools and split them down the middle on enrollment for D2 and D1 you'd have a weird setup but at least it would be a more fair system than what we are currently working with.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
When these schools do drop I would like to see Richlands and Graham or even Tazewell join the CMD. But would these three schools even join Region D? As for John Battle it wouldnt hurt my feelings at all for them to go back to C. Let them go back and give us Graham, Richlands, and Tazewell though Bluefield would be a long road to travel for any sport but football.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
remember - the Grundy AD's been around long enuf that Bristol & Marion were District trips, so Wise is no biggie in his mind.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
"Fair" and the VHSL cannot be used in the same train of thought, without risking burn-out or legal action.

And Marion is back on that district list for them again now. So which would be closer for them?

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Who cares who is closer for Grundy, we could put about any team in the district including Richlands and it be a better/closer option. F Grundy. Let them play Hurley 10 games a year. We dont want them.

Hell you need them! We (CMD) wouldnt want them either. They actually make a great fit for the BDD Power and size wise.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
If Grundy joins the district, Im starting a barf bag business. I'll be able to retire in a weeks time. Ive never ever felt good by the time I made it to Grundy. The 96-97 Raider basketball team filled up a whole box of treat bags that the cheerleaders made us with vomit. We had nothing left to drop on Hurley, it was the dry heaves the rest of the way

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
I had heard Grundy was dropping but I figured they would join the BDD....I don't mind them joining the LPD the trip there is closer for Clintwood than the trip to GC was

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Only team in the LPD that might support this at all would be Clintwood. Grahm "supposedly" is wanting to drop down soon and petition to play in Region C. I think in 5 years we'll have Grundy/Tazwell/Richlands and Region C will have Marion and Grahm as new members in Single A. It's going to be really hard for the LPD to compete at the Region D level in anything other than D1 Football. Agreed about Grundy on a school bus it's rough the only time we went over there when I was in high school was 2001, and needless to say I felt like barfing when we got there.
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
Graham, Tazewell, and Marion are natural matches for Region C. Richlands is iffy (seeing as how Hurley is RD).
I would like to see consistant geographical boundaries for the regions. Battle has absolutely no reason to be C.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
There just upset that they cant compete in the CMD.

That is my thought as well
I have heard that all the Tazwell schools will stay in the same district (Not sure how Pocahonas fits into it though)
IMHO Grahm/Tazwell/Richlands would fit well in the CMD if Lee were somewhere else
But the BDD needs at least 2 new teams so who the heck knows......could be that the Region needs to redo all its districts
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
i heard from 2 lpd principals that they voted grundy down for the lpd
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
The BDD needs to at least get one more D2 school involved, it's not fair to the rest of the Region that Honaker can get into the playoffs by beating 3 D1 schools. Two of which who are normally two of the worst in the state. Geographically it would work out better if Clintwood moved to the BDD and Lee moved to the LPD. It's hard for me to imagine the LPD without Clintwood though. The system in general is terrible, especially if you look at it from a non football viewpoint. The VHSL is currently asking St. Paul to compete with Lee High in every sport but Football and starting this season Basketball. That alone is terrible, and that is not even mentioning the problems you have in the numbers from Region B compared to Region D.
Buffalo Gap would've been the largest school in the LPD yet they get to play CW for the state title, while Clintwood has to petition to play D1. The VHSL is poorly set up, to me the purpose of the VHSL should be to provide student athletes with an equal opportunity to compete. They should imo do whatever is needed to make the Divisional Setup fair or remove the setup all together. Anytime you have a system where a team can win a state title in one division and that school be larger than a team in another division it's a flawed system. The population gap in this state poses a so called huge problem yet Region A schools such as Coloinal Beach with less than 200 kids are playing D1 in Region A and WC a legit D1 school is playing Region B, both schools were beaten this year by Buffalo Gap in football a school that is pushing 600 students.
To me it would be better if they did a 1-16 system. I understand the travel problem in football but at least student athletes would be able to compete on equal footing.

Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
The declining enrollment of a lot of SWD teams (Richlands, Grundy, Graham (sort of), Tazewell, Marion) is proof that the VHSL should change the classification system.
-
Re: Anybody else see this about Grundy?
The VHSL has been saved for years imo by these schools "playing up". Just 5 years ago they had two AA districts in SWVA, 5 years from now they will have zero. I feel sorry for Abingdon and Carroll County, the only other AA district is in Roanoke. So, if all these schools play accordingly does Abingdon and CC get a hardship like Lee did? I don't see how you could say no to these two after you have already said yes to Lee. Which if that happens your D2 in Region D is basically going to be the old D3 Region 4. Schools like Powell Valley and JJ Kelly could then petition to move down on the basis of the Rye Cove rule if they wanted. The VHSL has set themselves for one big mess in SWVA. I'm sure everyone at the VHSL is praying for consolidation because if not the athletic situation of Wise Co schools will be one of mass chaos.

Well if no district wants them does the VHSL deside where they go since they have the right to drop down.
IMHO Grundy, Clintwood and Ervinton SHOULD move to the BDD Lee to the LPD Tazwell and Richlands (if and when they drop) to the CMD and I have NO CLUE about Graham (I would THINK CMD or region C)

Re: Going on those enrollment figures for 2007? I'd do this......

Re: Going on those enrollment figures for 2007? I'd do this......
I don't believe you will see RC and TS consolidating any time soon. Too wide of an area. The most central location would still have kids on a bus for over an hour at times.
-
Re: Going on those enrollment figures for 2007? I'd do this......
I don't see how Wise Co. consolidates without doing the whole county. Leaving out PV and Appy wouldn't fly imo.
-
Re: Going on those enrollment figures for 2007? I'd do this......
PV Fan -- How does Battle in Region C not make sense? They were in it for like 10 years and two other schools in their county are in it. It's an Interstate District anyway and they are on the interstate.
-
Re: Going on those enrollment figures for 2007? I'd do this......
If JB is a Region C school so is VA High and Lebanon. Thats all I'm saying and if you put those schools in Region you dont have a CMD.
