Yep.
However, I'm holding out hope that Martz will believe that Gore is the next Marshall Faulk and that Alex Smith can turn into a young Kurt Warner under his tuteledge.
But my hope is weak so...yeah...you're right.
please draft a qb. Martz is a great qb developer. Dont use the 1st rounder on a QB but take a guy like Henne in round 3 and see if Martz can groom him. I have no hope for Alex Smith. There are late bloomers of course and I still dont believe Derek Anderson is worth a shat but they should still draft a QB at some point in the draft.
I agree whole-heartedly man. Smith's a great story, pretty decent guy, and has in his head what it takes to be a great QB. I just don't think he's got what it takes physically to be a great NFL QB (ala my hero Ken Dorsey).
Martz doesn't have to have a dynamic playmaker. He just needs a guy with good touch on the deep ball, accurate and strong short/mid-range passing, and patience in the pocket to let plays develop...that last one leads to a problem that SF has though--they run block like crazy for Gore, but they can't pass block to save their lives. A sound pass-blocking tackle and a pocket QB w/a big accurate arm are musts in the later rounds.
Their first round pick this year should be an elite type of WR. Their first round pick is going to be at #29 most likely this year, and they could be in position to get a guy like Early Doucet/Malcolm Kelly/Mario Manningham. If they got one of those, any of them could step in right away and play in the slot as the 3rd WR to complement Darrell Jackson/Arnaz Battle and push Ashley Lelie to the 4th WR role where he needs to be IF he's even going to be on the team next year.
Now being a Skins fan doesnt seem so bad.

What would put the nail in my coffin is if I'm watching the draft this year, and I hear Goodell or whoever's announcing the picks at that point say "With their 3rd round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select......Kyle Wright, quarterback, University of Miami."
I'd commit Harry Caray.
Why not stick with the Hill kid who played the last 3 games. As good of a QB developper Martz is, the Hill kid showed a lot of potential.

if i heard his name mentioned in any round id probably die from shock
no chance he gets drafted
UFA......maybe
Good point. Hill did have a 101.3 QB rating and only 1 interception all year, completed 68% of his passes. However, he only averaged just a little over 6 yards per pass completion and his longest pass was for a 26 yard gain. Martz's offense is predicated on getting the ball down the field, I'm not sure that's Hill's strong point.
Kid's a winner--back when he was a senior at Maryland, he led them to the ACC title back in '01. If he can show some arm strength to get the ball down the field, he's got enough athleticism at his size (6'3/226) to elude the pass rush if need-be. He even played some WR on scout team in the preseason when he wasn't battling Jesse Palmer for the 3rd QB spot.
I like him, but I still think they need to grab a guy like Henne in later rounds to let Martz groom for the long-term.

one of the worst hires in SF history.
