There can be an argument made

..as to why we had a 3 team playoff just for a tourney seed (still think it was money racket and folks had best hope that JJK and Appy don't pull "upsets" tomorrow,thus totally blowing things out of the water),but good luck convincing me that there is a need for consolation games. Both the Lady Raiders and Lady Green Wave will play for 3rd place in a meaningless game. The game was rendered so when both teams were eliminated from postseason play tonight. What is there to play for? The only argument that can be made is to give the girls (especially #24 for the Wave-been a pleasure watching her play over the last few years) a last hurrah,but we all know this is about money. J.J.K HS will benefit from 2 more communities paying for tickets and concessions on championship night, but that 3rd place game is going to be 2 teams with nothing to play for hitting the floor. I don't mind the bigger and better tourney deal,but it's hard to argue for a consolidation game.

Also, congrats to the Lady Indians from the Reservation for doing their usual thing and punching a ticket to the title game,and the PV Lady Vikings for continuing to show that they are arriving as a program by stunning the Wave. This league is not going to have a bad squad next year. We are lucky to have the quality of coaches that we have in the league (even Ol' Goforth,even if he doesn't see eye to eye with me here :/. Him and Day at PV have really made an impact)

i'm not sure how single A works...but in AA in the River Ridge District, Pulaski Co. finished tied for first in the season but lost tonight in the semi's to Blacksburg so we're having a consolation game with Salem to see who moves on to regionals

I completely forgot about this new mess that we have. My bad friends. The Wave and Raiders are still kickin' (guess with this new deal,pretty much everybody and their little brother gets in)

There has to be a third place game because there has to be a clear cut 3rd place finisher to determine who gets the 9 points and who gets 4.

I think I have gotten a pretty good grasp on it, the 3 way ties in the LPD and CD make it a little tougher though.

Seems that this new system is going to reward alot of mediocrity.

Yeah, someone didn't think it through.

When a tournament of 6 is increased to 16 and there are only 23 teams competing, somebody needed some money.

It reminds me of the TN football,where you have weak teams with losing records rewarded with berths. The only difference is they have too few in regions and we have too many.

Although I am not complaining because I'm glad Clintwood is getting the chance to play in the regional tournament, I just don't understand how they qualify? I understand the Raiders are in in a different division, so I can see that but I don't have a good enough grasp on this point system thing. Which brings up another question: how is Clintwood in one division in football, but a different in basketball. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.

She is the best player in the league (shot is as good as it gets),and she stepped up big when her team needed her tonight (what a leader is suppsed to do). Is she drawing college attention?

I'm not in the area anymore but I used to play ball at Clintwood and still have connections there. I've seen her play a couple of times when I'm back in town and she is perhaps one of the best in southwest VA. I read in a newspaper article not long ago that there was a couple of schools interested: uva wise, VCU, Emory, and maybe Marshall. Don't quote me on that though.

Hope she goes to UVA-W. They certainly can use her.

Clintwood , Castlewood, and Coeburn are all Div 2 schools BUT due to the "Rye Cove" Rule they are allowed to petition to play Div 1 for football only.

The RC rule could be tweaked to cover other sports or done away with all together. IMHO the best fix would be to scrap the divisions go to a 4 or 5 A system allow mixed districts and not allow playing up or down.

She would have a better opportunity to grow and learn at VCU or Marshall. VCU has an great women's basketball program. If I'm not mistaken, they offer their players the opportunity to play overseas during the summer. She probably wouldn't get the playing time there though.

But why would there be a rule that would only allow football teams to drop down and play in D-1. What would be the reasoning behind it.
Also, I still haven't figured out how the Clintwood girls would qualify for the regional tournament.

The rule was made to even out enrollment disparities. Football has had divisions for 20 years now, and is the only sport that has them for all levels, so the modifications only apply to football.

Div. in b'ball is a Group A EXPERIMENT this year (and I can't stress that word enough). Each Region has their own point system and # of qualifiers. They're learning "on the fly".

I figure the reason for allowing drop in football is that it takes so many players to field a team, and if your numbers are low, so is your talent pool...where as, in basketball 5 good players can win a state championship (see Council), as opposed to football needed atlest 20 good players... Hope that sounded right....

I am prolly the only one that likes the new setup, it allows more chances for upsets, and less chance of one bad game sending a team packing after the district tournament, especially with the way coin tosses decide seeding in SWVA...

Look at the Cumberland for example, TS could easily be picked as the D1 favorite from the Cumberland before the tourny, but because Coin tosses decide how a season will end around here, they ended up in a bad place in the bracket, and under the old rules they would have had virtually no chance of going to regions...However, under the new rule, they are going on to regions, and will probably have as good of a shot as anybody to make the top 2...

IMO, basketball should not have divisions...and after district tournaments, regions C and D should be grouped together and A and B grouped together. Then seed the 2 qualifying teams from each district (reg. season champ and tournament champ only qualifiers)according to rating with record as the tie breaker. Then, have a SINGLE elimination tournament. Cuts out all the BS, and teams that need to just be gettin ready for spring sports...and can be over and done with in a week or so.

That makes sense. If Kelly wins on friday, where will they be seeded?

I believe they will be 1,2, or 3...Va High, Lebanon, or Honaker will be right there also...will also take into account regular season wins I believe.....

Castlewood will be in that mix as well

What other team will be in the tournament:
Wise, Clintwood, Powell Valley, Honaker, Castlewood, VA High, Lebanon and ????

I personally think the whole points system is a terrible idea. Being a successful team is all about stepping up when it matters most....in the tournaments. However, if the points system stays in place then the rules should apply across the board. It should apply to all sports and there should be no exceptions. In my opinion that's the only way to make it fair to every team.

Lebanon is out, Lee and Gate City are in. The only thing left to decide in D2 girls is the seeding 1-8.

Top 3 seeding should prolly be:

1) VA High
2) Castlewood
3) Kelly
