Re: Best Actor..
Don't tell me you enjoyed Titanic. Worst date of my life and I had to sit thru a 15 hour film.
I am going to have to think about this one and get back with ya.

Re: Best Actor..
Denzel Washington
I also like Gene Hackman, but his resume doesn't compare to DW, imo.
-
Re: Best Actor..
Johnny Depp...without a doubt. I'm not crazy about him, but he can play any part and he is the best of his generation...and that includes Leonardo DiFagglio...lol
-
Re: Best Actor..
-
Re: Best Actor..
I think they are talking about younger actors...but IMO Costner, Connery, Hopkins, Hanks and Sam Jackson are all better than Morgan Freeman...Freeman is limited in his parts.
-
Re: Best Actor..
Well, Im 28. Dicaprio is 32.
Denzel is in his late 40's if not his 50's.
I love Brad Pitt as well, he is in his 40's.
I was taking age into consideration here.
And yeah Titanic isnt a bad movie.

Re: Best Actor..
deniro
pacino
SLJ
three of the most diverse actors of this or any era
lock the thread.......this ones over
-
Re: Best Actor..
Really? Im a huge fan of the first two, but neither one has really done anything outside playing a mobster/gangster that stands out to me. I dont think they are very diverse, they make or were in the best movies ever, but I think The Godfather when I see them, even when its Jake Lamatta (sp).
Ill stick by Dicaprio in the argument, especially of his generation.
-
Re: Best Actor..
deniro.....mean streets.....taxi driver.....ragingbull.....meet the parents/fockers......heat.......men of honor......sleepers.....cape fear......ronin.....jackie brown
all movies he killed that were mobster flicks
pacino.....serpico.....cruising......dog day afternoon.......scarface......scent of a woman.....glengarry glenn ross.......carlitos way......heat.......2 for the money.....any given sunday......oceans 13
some of his best where he didnt play a mobster
and theres another movie coming out later this year where they star side by side and are featured together for much of the movie......its called rigtheous kill........see it......its a cop flick
to say that those two arent very diverse is just downright dumb
they can do much more than mobster flicks......thats just what they do best
godfather......casino......bronx tale......donnie brasco
mob movies are only a very small part of their respective resumes

Re: Best Actor..
My favs: Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson-oldie but goodie, Samuel L. Jackson,
Don't know if he's the most verstaile--but I love Adam Sandler in anything-he mostly does comedy but I loved him in Spanglish.
I like John Travolta, but I can remember all the way back to Saturday Night Fever and Welcome Back Kotter.
George Clooney, Mel Gibson, even though he has done some wacko things in the last few years-Braveheart was so good.
Tom Hanks is probably the most verstaile but there are just some actors like the others I mentioned who just bring a certain presence to the screen, whether they are considered the best of our time or not.
I guess most of mine have been around for a while...Alot of the young actors today don't do as much for me as the ones I mentioned.
-
Re: Best Actor..
I stick by it, they play much of the same characters. Mobsters/Gangsters. And scattered in other roles. Meet the Parents was good, Meet the FOckers blew. For Deniro. Pacino is the same way, their mold isnt very different, I have seen every movie you listed and it still hasnt changed my opinion on their diversity, granted their movies and the ones you listed are prob some of the greatest movies ever made.
-
Re: Best Actor..
I think my favorite is Harrison Ford.
Don't worry Coach, I actually liked Titanic as well. Surprisingly my wife hates it.
-
Re: Best Actor..
I know women are supposed to like Titanic...but I really didn't like it...maybe it was because I knew what was supposed to happen haha....Harrison Ford is very good...and Sean Connery-shew I have too many favorites...what can I say? I am a huge movie buff!

Re: Best Actor..
Most the guys people are mentioning are in their 50, 60's and 70's. I think Dicaprios work stans well being 32 or 33, I cant remember which. I think The Departed is my 3rd fav movie of all time behind the first 2 Godfathers.

look at their resumes and you will see that they both have very few mob movies to their credit.......most of their resumes are everything but......the only reason you think that is because what most people remember are godfather and casino......and forget about flicks like scent of a woman and ronin
to say they arent diverse as actors tells me you dont undersatnd the definition of the word

Re: Best Actor..
the hell I dont, it was Tony Montana as a blind guy. The reason people remember those, is its their best work. What about that movie Deniro did with Eddie Murphy, thats a high point. Look, I dont disagree with you as a whole, I just dont think they are as diverse as you do. Just like I think Linkin Park is for teenage girls and you dont. Deniro and Pacino are the lead actors in my two favorite movies ever, period, bar-none. I just dont see them as very diverse actors, they have been in other movies yes, most of them I didint care for.

Re: Best Actor..
chris farley was hysterical but limited in his roles
he was a modern day belushi
among the funniest of their time.......but with limited range

it doesnt matter if you cared for their other flicks or not
pacino won an oscar for scent of a woman.....that movie bores me to death.......but it shows how good he is when hes not in a godfather-esque role
-
Re: Best Actor..
Meh, like I said I can see your point, but theys many people that have won oscars on their name. I think Carlitos Way is just as good as any movie he made.

Re: Best Actor..
It would take some time for me to sit down and think of any specific actors/actresses in my generation that I think are standouts.
Outside of my generation I'm a big Robin Williams fan. Great comedy. Great bad guys. Great creepy guys.
-
Re: Best Actor..
my favorite robin william role was rainbow randolph in death to smoocy
-
Re: Best Actor..
ok well how about will smith
-
Re: Best Actor..
I would give it to Depp. What about Billy Bob Thorton?

Re: Best Actor..
Matt Damon or Matthew McConaughey for semi-young actors
-
Re: Best Actor..
Damon in the Bourne series was great. Thought he did a great job in Oceans 11 as well.
-
Re: Best Actor..
I love anything Steve Carell is in, he is hilarious
Also I think Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a great actor, loved him in "The Rundown", "Walking Tall", and "Gridiron Gang"...he was really a big surprise to me when I first saw his movie
-
Re: Best Actor..
Im with beast. Nobody takes over a role and truly personifies it like Depp.
-
Re: Best Actor..
Will smith can take any role u give him too.
-
Re: Best Actor..
Most of Smiths roles have been pretty similar IMO. Not a great amount of depth to his movie roles. Dicaprio will be mentioned in the greats when its all said and done. He has been very selective in his roles, and only picked very good parts which helps his status in the long run.
-
Re: Best Actor..
Bill Simmons (The Sports Guy) says the same thing about Denzel. That every movie he is in, he plays Denzel.
-
Re: Best Actor..
DeNiro would be even thought of better if he was a bit better in picking his roles. I think sometimes if they offer him $20 he'll do the movie (someone mentioned the Murphy movie, thats a classic compared to his turn as Fearless Leader in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle).
It's hard to think of a younger generation, because most of the time it takes them years to get enough of a resume to be considered good, and by that time, they aren't young.
Did someone actually say McConaughey? He actually started good but has went backwards from almost the beginning. Damon is a good choice, he's pretty diverse (never would have thought I'd have took him for a bad arse). I think DeCaprio probably is better but he takes few roles.
I guess the top 5-10 for me are, and not in order are
DeNiro
DeCaprio
Chrisian Bale
Tom Hanks
Will Smith
Denzel
Clooney
Costner (although normally only in sports movies *lol*)
Mel Gibson (when not gone crazy)
Depp
There are some other decent actors. Pacino, Tavolta (now and then), Cruise (when he wanted to and not so much is later stuff), Bruce Willis (more than you realize), Clive Owens will be, Matt Damon (probably should be in the top 10 actually), Nicholas Cage (again hit or miss due to material), Affleck is better than people think, Samuel L when he's not trying to be Samuel L, and Robin Williams (who has done more decent stuff than people even think about).
