RAIDERS SWEEP JENKINS KY

The Raiders won the 1st game 19-3,Will Godsey led the Raiders with A grand slam in the 3rd and collected 6 r.b.i.'s for the game,Godsey has 15 rbi's in his last 17 innings.Skylar Peters picked up his first win of the season (1-0) by striking out 8 in 4 innings walking 2 and gave up 3 hits,Will Hamilton pitched the 5th inning striking out the side for the save(1).The 2nd game ended 9-1,Freshman Caleb Daniels struck out 13 batters and gave up 3 hits in his varsity debut for the Raiders.Skylar Peters homered for The Raiders which improves to 4-0.The Raiders play Lebanon Friday at Lebanon 5:00. The Raiders have scored 60 runs in there 4 games this year while giveing up 11.The Raiders will be tested tomarrow against Lebanon and Tuesday against Honaker,which returns 8 starters from the team that knocked the Raiders out of the Regional tourny last year.

Do they have the potential to beat kelly this year?

I know kellys great but i havent seen them play this year

They have the potential and talent to do so,whether they will utilize it who knows?Just like last year we beat Kelly at Kelly,and the they come to Norton and whip us good.Ill be able to tell more about it after our next two games.Kelly is awful good from what im hearin down in Myrtle Beach.

yeah we had a good team last year and I think they are even better this year...Kelly did clean up at the beach, i havent got a chance to see us over the break but 60 runs in 4 games is pretty good

Why is Stewart playing centrfield and batting lead off?
Seems to me if I were gonna hit him and play him in two of the worst places he was gonna be, it would be those two.

Not to slight the Raiders,but Mack? C'Mon-Jenkins is god-awful. Try scheduling some actual non-distric competition for a change. I remember JJK playing Jenkins in a DH at Wise years ago and beating them something like 27-2 both games. Mack is still padding those wins I guess. Playing RC,SP and Jenkins isn't going to get you ready for JJK. You know this as well wyatt (have heard a few Norton fans lament the non-distric scheduling over the last lttle bit).

How is that not a slight to the Raiders? You just called out their "weak" schedule? Which must mean you may think their wins are meaningless?

They (the players) can't help who they are playing=not a slight to their players. Compare their wins to JJK's though. The Raiders haven't even been tested yet.

I agree with that, Ive heard jenkins is awful and we need some tough opponents to test us out a bit, guess thats macks fault...I guess we'll have to wait till a little later in the season to see how good they really are...plenty of talent on the team, just have to see if its as good as others

And I'm not saying that the Raiders should be at Myrtle Beach. They could however do better with scheduling. JJK's non-distric opponents prior to the SC trip, Sullivan North and THS would steamroll Jenkins,RC,and SP as well.

I compleely agree with you indian dad.....they really need to play some good teams to get better and to really see where they are are and how theyd match up with the teams around here

In their defense you often have to schedule those teams in advance, or know someone. Granted Shupe prob could get game with most of those teams, the name Kelly lends it more able to get those game, Burton isnt know for its baseball program. Playing in those big tournys also cost a lot of money, money in which Im sure Raider Atheletics would rather spend in the fall.

Can still schedule JSB,GC, Castlewood,Lee...etc. Did the Raiders schedule them? I don't have their schedule.

From what I hear teams don't mind playing the Raiders, they just don't want to put up with Shupe. He promised us a state ring--when 5 years ago and I'm not so patiently waiting any more. We want results in Norton--NOT PROMISES.

Money for Burton baseball is non-excistent.Kids dont schedule they just play whos on it?Mack's logic,who knows?Weak 1st 4 gms yes!!!Playing schools our size?YES.Schedule going to get tougher?YES.Remaing non-district-Gate City,Lebanon,Honaker.From what i heard the pool Kelly was in was pretty weak.Stronger than our schedule?Certainly!But they werent playing word beaters.But the point is yes we have played 3 below average teams so far!!!Still pretty good playing by the Raiders.I dont ask no questions i just go watch.But you are right ID i would love to play some tough ass teams,but we will be tested today and Tuesday.Like you stated b4 i would rather lose one to a real good team rather than blow one out.

You heard wrong. North Myrtle Beach is coached by a former Kelly Indian,and has a solid program. The Louisa team that beat us by one run is a solid program as well.

If anyone's was weak it would've been Va High's (excluding Georgetown) with Van and Tri-Valley.

Well i tell you who told me Coach Wyatt!! Dont no why he would lie.Look who pitched against them,and definatelly not knocking him but it wasnt the ace>And i mean Coach Wyatt that use to coach at kelly.I dont no myself wasnt there.Like i said thats what i heard.Coach said he talked to N.Myrtles coach so pretty reliable i think.Just what they told me last night at the game.Hell i dont no about either team.I
m just saying the teams werent the best of the best.Better than cumberland district teams yes,but world beater no.

Regardless,the competition was still considerable better than Jenkins,RC and SP (who lost 20-0 to PH-a team not even favored to win thir distric,yesterday)

Thats a FACT!!!Just pointing out the Myrtle tourny is not the best of the best.Would of loved for our kids to have that opportunity,dont no why Mack schedules the way he does,Money,Wins,etc,I dont no.Kids just play who's on it...The kids are tired of these 5 inning games as well,but it gives all our underclassmen playing time,and the MAIN thing is the KIDS are haveing FUN playing,this is the loosest bunh of kids ive been around.Haveing FUN is what it is about and all 15 kids are doing it.See ya at the games ID.

I wouldn't go that far, Mack has got the money he has wanted, not only from the school but from personal donations wanting to see the baseball team back on track. Don't know where you got that. One thing he might try is a fundraiser every now and then, that is how the football team makes a bulk of their money. The annual JIB golf tournament is the biggest fundraiser the team has every year.

We make a killing off those dam gold card's,every player sells 20 at 10 bucks a piece,we have nothing in them.

Those boys work hard selling them janks too. I had half the team show up on my doorstep selling them last year. I had to tell them that I didn't need one and showed them my Kelly one [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

That just shows you were Mack's priorities are. He should have spent that money on things the team actually needs. (How many diffrent sets of uniforms have we had in his tenure?, did he really need to fix the field that bad?, was his office addition to the block building neccessary?) And try having a fundraiser every now and then to help offset some of those cost you don't get at the gate. Only 100 people showing up for a game in which half don't pay isn't going to cut it.

The gate off the football team each year just about keeps all athletics above float in the school, it is that way at all schools in the district. Football and Boys basketball are the two top gates in the school.

Does the baseball team sell those cards or is it just the football team? Mack may want to think outside the box for once and realize that the Begley's, Hunnicutt's, and Daniels' aren't going to be there forever. Plus you know why Burton only has two Baseball Boosters? You know this answer, it is Baseball and it is Norton, not too many people care, as you can tell by the 50 people that show up to a game, and that is pushing it normally.

As far as the pressbox goes, we had a perfectly good one until someone torn it down so they could make the perfectly fine backstop look professional.

So what is really more improtant: Balls to play with (OK that sounded funny!) or a sweet backstop and a nice looking infield.

Tennis is higher up in Norton than Baseball.

Speaking of how's the ol' JIB tennis team doing this year? I would imagine graduation has hit us hard over the past 2 to 3 years.

Is Clintwood now the big dogs in the district with GC out of town?

That is up to the players doing their job and giving their all. Do that first and then worry about the state rings.

Yeah, Last years graduation hit us very hard. We lost 4 out of our top 6.
Things aren't looking too bright for JIB Tennis.

Mack is not not going to be there in my opinion 1 mayby 2 yrs tops.Hes done well,in bringing the program back to being respectable,were no longer a auto win.Beating kelly and makeing it to the regionals last year was a big step.But our special group is going to be gone,and i think mack will go with them.You dont need much throughout the year as far as money and equipment,Players provide there own gloves,cleats,and the majority there own bats.Bought new catching eqip last year and new home unis.Begley and co. feed the team after games and ol huck gives us a pepsi or 2 ha ha.Hell vi get along with everybody there.We tried to play music last year for pregame from the pressbox,you no centerfield,put me in coach,and all that and Keith put a stop to that because of people playing tennis,to hard to concentrate.Something else Mack fix's Jimbos golf cart trail everyear through the outfield,its funny listening to him rant and rave about that.I rekon the school hired a pemanent grounds keeper now,Thacker takes care of all of it mowing etc.Lebanon game rained out yesterday,play Honaker Tuesday at home,should be a hell of a game,Honaker put us out of the regionals last year,and they have 8 starters returning,we have 7.Come out and support and get a hell of a Hot Dog and a ice cold PEPSI.

You r right Mack can pass his knowledge to them,but the kids have got to utilize it.Hes the most dedicated coach i have ever seen or been around.He lives at the fieldhouse,players come by anytime,hit throw,talk about growing pains etc.Good man in my opinion.
