today in global warming...........
Vancouver Winter weather sets several records
With file from Darah Hansen, Canwest News Service; Vancouver Sun
Published: Monday, April 21, 2008
All that April snow this weekend was more than surprising -- it was also record-setting.
The flakes that fell across the Vancouver region Friday night and Saturday represent the latest snowfall ever on record.
At its peak, the storm dumped 2.5 cm of snow at the Vancouver International Airport, with 8 cm at Lynn Valley and 30 cm at Mount Seymour. Vancouver Island recorded 6.4 cm of snow at Victoria International Airport by 11 a.m. Saturday -- more than any on an April day since 1940. But the big record dump came in Nanaimo, where the city hadn't seen measurable snow on April 19 since 1947. As of 11 a.m., 24 cm covered the ground at the airport.
and...........
Snow Blizzard forced Earth Day under a Tent in Canada/
So much for global warming. Earth Day festivities went ahead despite the blast of frigid weather yesterday.
A handful of visitors still took the time to inquire about several solar-powered products on display before running off toward the lone heater in the tent to warm up.
"Obviously we'll have fewer people than we would have liked, but to cancel an Earth Day event because of weather would kind of be the antithesis of what this is all about," said organizer Janice Boudreau.
Eco-Air representative Eric Gormley couldn't convince local kids lobbying city council for an anti-idling bylaw to brave the cold yesterday, but happily stepped up on their behalf, offering stickers and information about greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
"We're here to raise awareness of the problem, even though on a day like today you don't necessarily think of global warming," he said.

Wow...how about the fact that it snows in the northern US well into the spring and Canada is north of the northern US...still, it's a shock to me it ever snows in Canada...lol...wild they are measuring in cm.s..lol...so 24 cm is roughly 8 inches...break out the snow shoes!!..it's snowed up to the knees of he midgets in Canada!!

boy did you completely miss the point
first off.....the global warming sheeple have some thinking it should never snow again
secondly it isnt when it snows but the fact that its record snowfalls this late into the spring
again that shouldnt be happening because of "global warming"
but clearly it is.....and the reason it is.......is because al gore is full of [censored] and needs to be kicked square in the sternum

Re: today in global warming...........
hahahaha...ok...let me know if it snows in Iceland this spring tho...Greenland too. Global warming means the Earth's atmosphere is warming...not that it'll never snow again in places where it typically snows. Doesn't imply you'll see huge climate changes overnight either.
-
Re: today in global warming...........
"Global Warming" is a misnomer really for what we should be concerned about regarding the earth's climate. We should be worried about dramatic record-breaking weather patterns--record snows during winter in Vegas (happened this year or last one), record high temps in colder climates, with more expected rainfall and less expected snowfall. Longer periods of drought, even if followed up by some rainfall, is cause for concern.
There are extreme weather anomalies that we should be on the lookout for, even if 80% of the rest of the year is normal, it's the increase in the extraordinary happening where it shoudln't that we should worry about--because if things keep getting a little out of whack, more and more, the climate will eventually get to the point to where a major swing will occur before we know it.
Let Gore chase after ManBearPig, and be more concerned with how pollution and other adverse environmental factors are causing swift climate change in either direction.

but again you are missing the point
the fact that its still snowing this late in the spring when "warming" indicates it shouldnt be.....because it should be too warm for snow now
secondly......if there was a thing as "global warming" you wouldnt be seeing record breaking snowfalls at this point in the year

i dont know that i agree with that
we know that there is a long and documented history of climate change cycles
this is nothing more than one point on that cycle
but if you look at the nonsense that douchebag gore has said.....hes clearly talking about "warmer" temperatures
remember his crap about warmer ocean temps leading to stronger and more frequent hurricanes?
he specifically discussed "warmer ocean temps"
so in his way of thinking "global warming" means exactly that
and clearly he couldnt be more incorrect
-
Re: today in global warming...........
I really think you're the one that is missing the point...you seem to think that because there is a phonomenon called global warming, that it isn't supposed to snow in specific places in the spring. In order to more fully understand, I think it would be best to compare avg. snowfall data in a place to the avg. snowfall in the same place 20-30 years ago. That's when scientists started talking about global warming anyways....see how the 2 numbers stack up. Plus, do the same with natural disasters....

You didn't catch what I said. I clearly stated that global warming is a misnomer--much like zone blocking (you should understand that one).
"Global Warming" in terms of higher temps isn't what we need to worry about, we need to worry about swift changes in either direction when it comes to the climate. Just because the mean temperature for a location doesn't change doesn't mean that its' climate/weather patterns are completely stable--that's what we need to be on the watch for, extreme weather and extreme increases/decreases in temperatures...spikes along the line graph, so to speak.

Re: today in global warming...........
i understand what you are saying......but the truth is that there is a long documented history of such changes happening
all we are seeing is just another step along the cycle
nothing more nothing less
so its nothing to really worry about

Are we however, agreed, that the cycle should be continuously monitored to attempt to forecast any possible swift swings in world climate so we are prepared in case an extreme drought/freeze were to hit not necessarily the entire world, but part(s) of the world?

Yeah, you have that paper from 11,000 years ago ...when whatever it was happened. You are talking about 1 degree at a time, that won't stop snow. Most people are so dumb, they wouldn't even notice it.

Re: today in global warming...........
I Global warming exist why are the record high temperatures for all the 365 days of the year way back in the day??? their are like less than 15 days that the record has been broken since 1995 for Kingsport....
Someone please explain this to me...Some of the records go back to the 1930's...However, we did break a couple record cold nights just this past winter....
Explain this, If the earth is warming, why isn't it getting hotter??? I thought warming and temperature had something in common???
-
Re: today in global warming...........
Try not to focus on hillbilly heaven....
"WASHINGTON - This winter was the warmest on record worldwide, the U.S. government said Thursday in the latest worrisome report focusing on changing climate.
The report comes just over a month after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said global warming is very likely caused by human actions and is so severe it will continue for centuries.
And a NASA study reported Thursday in the journal Science found that an important counter-balance to warming "? sunlight blocked by volcanic gases, dust, pollution and other aerosol particles "? appears to have weakened."

Would you be havin' anymore questions?
PS..for the ice-what is floating will not matter as it will shrink as it melts and cease to float. The density is still the same , even if it is frozen. Only what is going to melt and run off from the land masses into the oceans will cause them to rise. 6th grade science class, Webster elem, Dayton, Oh

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand's biggest glacier is melting at its fastest pace in recent history, a scientist said Thursday.
The Tasman Glacier on South Island was 18 miles long in 1990, with virtually no lake at its front edge, Massey University glacier expert Martin Brook said.
New measurements last week showed the glacier was 14 miles long, he said.

VIENNA - Glaciers and mountain snow are melting earlier in the year than usual, meaning the water has already gone when millions of people need it during the summer when rainfall is lower, scientists warned on Monday.
"This is just a time bomb," hydrologist Wouter Buytaert said at a meeting of geoscientists in Vienna.
Those areas most at risk from a lack of water for drinking and agriculture include parts of the Middle East, southern Africa, the United States, South America and the Mediterranean.
Rising global temperatures mean the melt water is occurring earlier and faster in the year and the mountains may no longer be able to provide a vital stop gap.
"In some areas where the glaciers are small they could be gone in 30 or 50 years time and a very reliable source of water, especially for the summer months, may be gone," Buytaert said.
Buytaert, from Britain's Bristol University, was referring to parts of the Mediterranean where her research is focused but she said this threat also applies to the entire Alps region and other global mountain sources.
Daniel Viviroli, from the University of Berne in Switzerland, believes nearly 40 percent of mountainous regions could be at risk, as they provide water to populations that cannot get it elsewhere.

WASHINGTON - Global warming could force elk and mule deer from much of the American West. Wild trout could disappear in lower Appalachian streams. Two-thirds of the country's ducks may disappear.
A new assessment of the threat to fish and wildlife habitat has hunters and anglers calling for action.
Groups representing nine major hunting and fishing organizations planned to meet Thursday with the House committee chairman who hopes to write legislation to curtail greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

Re: today in global warming...........
well, looky here....
One month ago, we noticed that November 2007 was the coldest month since January 2000. Well, the RSS MSU satellite data prepared by remss.com show that December was even cooler. The December anomaly was -0.046 °C, compared to -0.014 °C in November. That means that December 2007 was also cooler than the average December from 1979. Moreover, we can finally complete the ranking of the years!
Let me start with forecasts in the mainstream media.
In January 2007, we were informed that 2007 was either likely or certain to surpass 1998 and become the world's warmest year on record by most media, including:
Reuters
AP & Foxnews
IHT
BBC
MSNBC
CBS
USA Today
The New York Times
The New York Sun
The Washington Post
National Geographic
CBC
The Guardian
The Independent
China People Daily
ABC Australia
Discovery Channel
Science Daily
Met Office
as well as virtually all other media you know. They justified this statement by referring to scientists who have combined greenhouse gases with the observed El Nino. Many sources, such as the New York Sun, even gave you the probability that 2007 would be the hottest year as 60 percent. They immediately added that this should "add momentum for the next phase of the Kyoto protocol", a comment that clarifies what is the actual goal of many of the people who study these questions professionally.
In the middle of the year when it started to be clear that the prediction was bogus, Phil Jones (Reuters) changed his mind only infinitesimally. It would be the second hottest year, he said. These big-shot agenda-driven scientists never have the courage to say that they were simply wrong
However, the greenhouse gases are not too important and El Nino was replaced by La Nina. As a consequence, RSS MSU data for the lower troposphere (graph, more graphs) show that 2007 was the coldest year in this century so far.

That is a BIG reason that the buzz words "global warming" has been replaced with "Climant Change" that way the Co2 and other Greenhouse gases can be blaimed for a widerrange of weather issues
