The home field advantage is dying....
As a lot of you former players (UTVols 2, PVFan, The Beast, ect.) know Clintwood's visitors locker room's are some of the most spacious and nicest that you'll find in the state. As I type this, those are no more. They are building a new visitors locker room/weight room expansion, so those nice, plush visitors accomodations you've been used to for the last 30+ years will be no more. The old locker room will be turned into the rest room and the old rest rooms have been torn down.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
LPD teams will find new arrangements when they visit the Cove also, as the home locker room will be housed in the new Field House and visitors will dress out in the old home locker room facilities inside the stadium.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I'd guess that Clintwood has the some of the smallest visitors lockers around. They're horrible. Appy's is small but at least it'll hold more than 10-12. I always thought it was funny when a team like PV'd come over with about 50-60 kids, you couldn't fit more than 10 people in that shoebox. It's about 4 feet wide and 15-20 feet long. You always had nice refreshing water to drink though, as long as you didn't mind drinking out of the back of the toilet.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I always thought that Clintwood had the best visitor locker rooms in the Region D. That walk in closet was NICE. I actually thought it was just a restroom the first time I went in it, I was looking for the huge troff (sp?) pisser to line up one of the walls.
That was always part of the mystique of playing in C'wood. They will be greatly missed.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
We had a player take a [censored] in front of everybody before a game in there one night. The CW locker rooms should never be torn down, it's like removing thunderstruck from pv's entrance.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
They wont actually be torn down. It's my understanding that they're going to be turned into rest rooms. The old rest rooms are what have already been torn down. Which isn't a bad thing. If you were standing at the urinal, anyone sitting in between the 45's looking in that direction could see you clear as day.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
Hell, I thought the entrance to the visitors locker room at Clintwood was a urinal...lol. You NEVER went through that door to the field without a helmet on....there was more drinks, nachos, candybars...and prolly piss and who knows what else that rained down on ya coming out that door. That being said, you knew where those folks' allegiance was.....I loved playing up there tho...close second to playing at Riggs.

Still erasing those memories
Also remember playing with cheese stains on my jersey from the nachos thrown from the above bleachers

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I swear I think that the visitor locker room was set up that way due to some psychological tactic Ralph came up with. And if anybody knows Ralph and thinks otherwise, they don't know Ralph
He didn't miss too many tricks.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I don't even remember who did that, I just remember them doing it.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I was thinking Robbinette

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I remember going in there to speak with Honakers coaches before the benefit game a couple of years ago. Definitely cramped quarters. What was worse, Clintwood or Haysi? I never played at Appy, Cwood or Haysi, but they all seemed pretty bad.
The worse I ever had to deal with was at Northwood my freshman year. We dressed under the stadium with their team. Divided only by showers that half worked with broken beer bottles and other glass in the floor of the dressing room and shower area. Classy I know.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
It's close between CW and Appy. Half the team has to stand outside at halftime at Appy, at least at CW you can get your whole team in there.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I always liked playing at Clintwood. I know Appys visting locker room is horrible because we had to use it in JV. Thomas Walkers may be the worst I was in because not only is it small but its a 10 minute walk to the field haha. We had a lighting delay up there my 10th grade year and Coach Turner took us into their gym wearing cleats instead of making us walk back.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
TW did have nice showers though. It is a little tight, but mainly because of the lockers. I didn't find it too bad. TS was pretty tight as well if I remember correctly. When we went back to Northwood they had us change in a school lockerroom which was about a half mile away from the field it seemed.
Lee Highs was nice, and Coeburns were as well I thought.
How would PV's rate though? I would have to put them on the crappy level because where do you go at halftime or before the game?
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
You have to put Coeburn at the top of any football faciliites list in the region or this side of Roanoke for that matter. Visitors right on the field plenty of room, decent showers even the film crew and coaches in the pressbox have plenty of room and not stuck in a hole with a 2 foot wide window for 2-3 coaches or just out on top of the bleachers or in a room behind the home fans where you can't see when they stand up.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
My sophomore year we dressed on the home sidelines and we went back 2 years later and dressed on the visitors sidelines. Neither one was a bad locker room.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
That was when we switched home and visitor sides of the fieldhouse. Both are pretty well the same, just made sense to switch them like that.

Yep, I dressed out in both of them--was on the current home side when I was in JV/8th grade, was on the current visitors side when I played varsity. The varsity locker room had nicer lockers, but I think that's been remedied since the latest switch--haven't been in there in a while. They're equally close to the whirlpools/training/weight rooms, and are nicer than most locker rooms I was ever in, in any sport.

i remember having to take a [censored] in front of the team in those nice clintwood facilities as well

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
C'mon guys...it's just a locker room not club med. Honestly I never gave a rats a$$ what the facilities were like as long as we got to play....Still, rule #1 for LPD players is DON'T EXIT THE LOCKER ROOM AT CLINTWOOD WITHOUT YOUR HELMET ON...lol.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
To be honest I don't think I remember too much about any of the locker rooms that we played. I vaguely remember them but nothing really sticks out.
Appy - Small but so was our teams, so that really didn't matter.
Wise - Honestly can't remember
Coeburn - Honestly can't remember, other than they were pretty big.
PV - Small but still not terrible
Clintwood - I might have a bigger closet in my house, most memorable.
Haysi - Honestly can't remember but don't think there was anything that terrible about them.
Pound - Forgot about them, slick as a witch's titty. Hated them as well, add them up there with the Clintwood locker rooms.
Twin Springs - I was so sick from the ride down I can't honestly remember them either.
Burton - I was always in the home locker room which wasn't bad at all, don't even know if we had visitor locker rooms, hopefully it wasn't the JV locker room, if so, it wasn't much bigger than Clintwood's.
Either way, I'm like suprbeast, I really didn't care much as long as we played. I would have dressed on the bus and it wouldn't have mattered.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
As long as we were able to play I didn't care either. I remember that Northwood locker room probably the most just because it was my first start, on a Saturday and it was snowing a little. Snow was blowing into our locker room from the broken window.

If you're a player and you're shy about taking a [censored] in front of someone, don't come to Clintwood. Not only are you on display in the visitors locker rooms but also in the Clintwood locker room. In the main home lockers, it's two open toilets on the left facing a urinal troff. Nothing to hide you from anyone.

Re: The home field advantage is dying....
Used to be that way at RC to on the home side, but they built a divider between them when a girl came out for the team my senior year. Built them all for her to last less than a week.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
I remember Garden had a pretty shitty locker room. It was next to a pool that looked like a swamp.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
Thats a field I never played on, or officiated on now that TV uses it.

I played on it 3 times and I sware think a person could end up with blacklung after a season playing on it. I honistly think there was coal on the field LOL and I remember blowing black snot for several days after every game I played there
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
If you were standing on the visitors side, you could only see the opposing side from about the knee up. That thing had the biggest crown of any field I've ever seen.
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
When I played, the visitors dressed under the bleacher at P.V. If you go around to the back of them, you will see the old dressing rooms, both visitors and P.V.
Also, Appy didn't always have the Dawghouse. Both vistiors and Appy dressed in the Gym locker rooms and both teams took the "walk" down the steps.
Same thing at Norton as was at Appy.
Now, at Ervington, we dressed in the gym locker rooms too, but with that, if you took a shower, you had to put up with the smell of using "sulfer" water.
We dressed in the gym at Clintwood and had to take the walk from their gym to the field on a walking path that led to the field. Back then, the problem was rotten eggs being thrown at you from the woods.
The visitors also basically had to dress in the graveyard behing coeburn then too, as they had no facilities for the visitors
We didn't care then where we had to dress, piss, or whatever, though. All we wanted to do was to play some FOOTBALL!!!!!
-
Re: The home field advantage is dying....
When I played, you still had to deal with the sulphur smell in the locker room taking a shower, and the septic smell on the field. One nice thing though, was that they had pulled their high jump mat into the visitors locker room one year, and that made a nice bed to relax on before the game.
