I'm officially irked.

This forum was meant for people, mainly established adult posters, to have some honor about themselves and not share too awful much with people not on this part of the board, or even not on here at all, whether it's sports-related information or something else. That way, we can have intelligent discussion about topics that would otherwise get out of hand on the main boards.

Just found out that a certain piece of information that was shared in confidence with the Old Timers via a thread on this board had been shared with media members, and that it trickled down to a poster's boss and got them in some trouble. Not "lose their job" trouble, but trouble in that they won't be trusted w/this kind of info much any more, which damages their integrity w/their superiors.

If you are a member of this Old Timers board, that means we pretty much know each other and respect each other as far as how we post on this board, whether or not we agree. Just know that everytime information is leaked out that should not really be leaked out, even if it seems harmless, could come back and bite someone in the rear.

Even if you know Jenay Tate, Coy Bays, Kevin Mays, Hoople, Rick Reilly, Bruce Feldman, Wolf Blitzer, Tom Brokaw, etc...as a longtime personal friend, if you read it here, don't share it unless that person is also on the Old Timer board. Sure, a media person doesn't have to name their source, but if they do, then that source could see trouble come their way.

Agree or disagree, but this speaks right to a person's integrity, and I don't like thinking that there are people like that on this particular section of the forum. I'm not naming names on any of this, I'm not pointing any fingers. I'm just saying take this as a reminder that if we talk about it on here, there's usually a reason why it needs to stay here--either to save us minor headaches w/bad convos on the main boards, or to share sensitive information that's worthy of discussion but doesn't need to be widespread.

Man, I thought this was about that stuff I wrote about you in the bathroom at Mosby's....

Yeah I've had similar things like that happen to me before, except the main problem with info leaked that I supposedly said was actually another poster. Mistaken poster identity (it was another female on here). Almost got ripped a new one by a boss for what this other poster said until I figured out what the heck was going on.

I got a visit at my main office from the boss at another job and the first thing he said was "why are you going online and saying all that crap?? coaches are getting pissed" blah blah. I had no idea what he was talking about. Took me an hour to figure it out when I went to the thread in question and read it over, then I still had to convince my boss that it wasn't me. Apparently someone who thought they were 'in the know' said this other poster was me.

Anyhow... agree with you CoeburnCane... keep the traps shut.

It not only gets certain people into trouble, but it also deters good, solid posters on this board from sharing some information that should be trusted to "Old Timers", with the understanding that it's not going to be leaked to the media or told to someone that will react in a volatile way to the information.

Also--I don't know for 100% sure that it was a regular poster that caused another poster to get into trouble. Could be someone that just reads that somehow got rights to this forum, and is a member of said media that used info off of here to make a story. That to me is despicable.

I dont talk about the forum alot, but people have the right to talk about what they want.

If someone sais I said something, that it turned out I didn't, and it were to cost me my job.....

Well, I don't know what you are going nuts about and I don't care. All I know is it wasn't me and I say nothing on here that isn't already public information anyway. I am a firm believer that if you have something like that to say, then say it in a pm. That way one would have the "expectation" of privacy of their conversation. Hell, everyone already knows all about me, so, nothing anyone says about me is "new" news anyhow.

I agree, this forum has gotten out of hand in a lot of ways lately and I, for one, feel it is time for people like the mods or Rock to "tighten" the reigns some. We haven't had anyone banned on here in a long time, nor has anyone been given a "time-out" for what they wrote either. I mean, Cane, just look at what people are writhing on the other forums now. A year ago, people would be banned for what is being said on them now. Remember the thread about Travis Turner going to P.V.? Or, even my thread about D.J. going to Austria for a month. Almost immediately, it became a "joke" thread. If you can't remember what was said, then just pull them up and re-read them. Or even the posts that PVFAN posts about UVA-Wise football (which I think was very informative), someone almost always tries to make it out to be a joke. And it is not just limited to the new members. The older ones post that way too.

Besides, everyone who has ever read the Coalfield, Post, Dickenson Star, or any of the local sports papers, knows that most of what is being said is pure speculation.

Its a public forum. As long as we are not slandering people, we should be able to post what we want.

I too see this as a forum where there's a higher level of maturity and trust - that's why it was created. It's not exactly a 'public' forum.
It's restricted membership for a reason, and if some on here feel that it's all fair game then perhaps they should just stick to the public access forums.

People can talk about whatever they want. But the understanding of a lot of the stuff that's supposed to be spoken about on this particular board is that it stays on here because other people handle it in an immature fashion, or it's sensitive information that may cause someone outside of this board to react in a volatile fashion.

I'm not trying to censor people, I'm appealing to the integrity that people with access to this part of the forum should have--and I know even you have some about you just from hanging with you what little time I've gotten to.

You know me man...I love nothing more than an open forum w/little to no rules--thusly why I'm a card-carrying member of the bottom 3%--CanesOverHere. However...on this board, this particular part of the forum, there is limited access to certain people. Stuff on here isn't meant to go into newspapers or on the local news, even if it does end up there eventually.

Basically, if someone on here gives you information from an inside source, don't share it with someone that could make it public and blow this source's cover. Kinda like a recruiting website. If I know there's a poster on a site that works in the athletic department of a university and has inside info on a particular recruit coming or not coming to the school I root for...then I read it, keep the info for my value only, and don't run my mouth about it to media or another outlet.

If you run your mouth, then you do two things:

1) you jeopardize the future of your source, professionally or otherwise.

2) you lose what inside connection you had to a particular subject of interest.

It's a lose/lose situation. Once again--I'm not downing free speech, I'm trying to get integrity back in the fold where it's been let down.

I hear ya man. This place (Old Timers Forum) is better. Unfortunately we are going to have some people that cant keep their mouths shut.

Yeah really. I didn't lose my job because of it but I DID lose sports assignments after that simply because of ALL the people that were told it was me making those comments that pissed off coaches. I get paid by the hour, so I lost income.

They couldn't send me out on a field with a coach/staff going 'there's the one that ran her mouth.' And considering I was the only female photographer at the time it was kind of hard to just blend in, do my job, and not be noticed. It's hard to undo incorrect gossip - spreads like wildfire and no one wants to believe the truth.

Just for the record, for anyone trying to get people in trouble, I am not, once and for all, "IBAWILDCAT."

She had a kid playing football last year. Might have been a senior, maybe a junior, I dunno.

She has "photography" listed as a hobby on her profile, she was at this same game I was shooting, she's female, and implies she's from Pound (she's not though - her kid plays for Pound). That does kind of fit the description of me (minus the part where she's a mom to a player).

She had some very clear and not so happy opinions of the reffing at that game and she posted it all on the sports forum. That's ok. She's a mom and part of regular John Q. Public. She can do that.

Apparently though someone told the paper that IBAWILDCAT was me making those comments and it angered a number of people that I, a member of the media, would say such opinionated and negative things. I was given a good talking to over it all - the whole time a huge question mark was hanging over my head - I had no idea why I was getting the talking to.

Even though I finally figured it out and explained it, I think the coaching staff and maybe some of my higher ups are still under the impression it was me anyhow. It sucks to have that hanging over me because I want more sports assignments.

I know what you mean by that.

Everyone write to the paper and tell them to give me more sports assignments lol - football season's coming up soon!

It is sort of crazy how this stuff works. I have a feeling I am blackballed at PV because of this forum. Phil himself told me he didn't want to see me on here anymore or I would be costing myself games. This is the old timers forum, and it's information is supposed to be trusted amongst everybody. Are you kiddin me? Honestly, I know a handful of people from the forum. Any person who post anything "confidential" or "important" on here, and doesn't think somebody else will talk about it, or leak it, should take a reality check. Whatever you post on this board is fair game for any person to take and say it to whomever.

But I will back Elpn, and Neutral on their reasoning. If someone says you posted something, or are saying something, and it's not you... that's a little far fetched, and I will be burning a house too.. especially if it were to cost me a job.

But, any and everything on this board is fair game. If a person knows who you are on here, and they see something posted and repeat it, there is nothing anyone can do. Why post it on here then? you know it is a risk to be repeated.

The situation I am speaking of may have very well done just that to this person, which is why I call for a little bit of integrity to be held on this particular part of the forum. There's a reason why this part of the board is supposed to be by invitation only.

When you don the officiating gear, one has to reallize that some players, coaches, and schools are so great, the only way they could loose or have a call go against them is if the officials are wrong...

Thats what makes me the maddest, is that some players and coaches really think every time a call goes against them, that you made a mistake because they are just so good that they would have never made one...

Sorry I hadn't gotten to throw a few cents into this discussion till now. This forum is supposed to be an old timers forum, meaning the members of this forum have proven themselves to be able to handle a mature discussion without going and throwing temper tantrums (or at least all the time *lol*). They don't just get in here by age, which is something a few think, and honestly I probably need to remove some who don't contribute or who haven't proven themselves. My time on here has been a lot more limited of late due to several issues. I'll try to pick up as football comes around.

Simple logic is that yes information on here isn't completely confidential, we all know that but the posters on this particular part of the forum are supposed to be adult enough to realize if something should be handled with a bit more discretion. If I post about something said in private, I am allowing the people of this board who have proven themselves to have information that I wouldn't maybe trust with some of the kids on the regular board. I don't expect the people on this section to not discuss it necessarily but I do expect them to use good judgement on who they discuss it with.

I'd really hate to restrict this board more or do away with it, if people don't treat this a bit differently then what's the point of having this as a seperate board?

And I agree that things probably need to be tightened down as far as language and behavior. I don't get on here as much right now, but I do appreciate it when someone sees something that is to far and alerts me and/or others.

I like having media on the board, and I created the scoreboard to help them. Its good to have some of them on here and its good to have some coaches on here, etc. It is not good when people use this board or such as fodder to try and hurt people.

Maybe the media should do more reporting instead of trying to pull stories off of here and then cite the board as their source. It'd save some heartache for some, maybe even jobs/chance for promotion or permanent job for some others. Without getting too awful specific...that's the situation that occurred here, I'm almost sure. Rock, or other mods...you want more specifics on this, PM me.

You will see it from time to time (not pulling a story exactly but I have seen several storys in the coalfield that mirror threads started on here the week before)

It is not a bad thing but it seems that the reporters could do a better job of shilding there sorce if it is likly to cause them problems

I disagree...if you're a journalist and you're using a message board for article ideas instead of going out and digging up stories as your job description calls for, then that's weak. May as well be plagiarism.

It's one thing to take a final score off the board and a few simple stats (that weren't reported)--it's another to take a story that could be controversial/sensitive off of here and then try to report it as your own...and out the source as the message board when you sense you're in trouble.

I agree with you Cane, journalists should have better investigative skills than to rely on a message forum for their stories. Now, ocassionally, there will be a good "lead" for a story on a forum such as this, but it by no means should be relied on for the complete source. Forums are highly "opinionated" and lots of times are only "rumor mills".

If you want to read the board as a media person, and see what stories you have missed...Thats one thing...

But I stick to what I said earlier about getting a story from here, you suck at your job, find another one...
