powell valley football problems
was wandering what has happened to the powell valley football program anyway. from little league to high school they are really struggling. last nights gate city powell valley middle school game was a blowout for gate city. it was 22 to 0 in the first quarter at one point in the game. looks like burton has took control of the football in that area now .

Re: powell valley football problems
Seems to me like just doesnt have the talent pool PV once had, but i dont look for the vikings to be down long they will be back stronger than ever
-
Re: powell valley football problems
where are the good players going to come from. from 6th grade up there is not much talent from what i have seen.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
you cant look at them that young they are still learning the game if they havent improved by the time they reach the JV level that is when you have the concern
-
Re: powell valley football problems
good point, however look at the middle school game last night. 58 to 20 . now i am not a genius here but they did not even compete and the gate city middle school team is pretty young compared to the last few years. i think powell valley is in one of those 4 to 5 year downcycles if not more, perhaps 6 to 8 years.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
that could be pretty bad, but could also be that GC has a very good team coming up as well depends on how the other games have gone this year as well.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
Sports begin and end in talent you can draw up all the X's and O's in the world, but if you have no talent you can throw it all out the window.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
GC has blasted everyone they've played...but they do most every year in 8th grade and JV. I wouldn't read too much into it.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
i don't think i was mentioning how good Gate City is going to be. that was the other poster. i am saying what has happened to the state of Powell Valley football. nobody wants to step up to the plate from BSG and admit it but it is TRUE and they know it and you know it...

Re: powell valley football problems
Not exactly...some of the best teams that PV has ever had on the varsity level lost some JV games. It's the nature of the beast. IMO, you know nothing about a player til he steps on the field during a varsity game. JV has too many variables. Schools include different grade levels on their teams, run limited offenses, players play positions they end up not playing on varsity, etc.

Re: powell valley football problems
Problems are relative.
I graduated from a high school where, a few years back, the football team had the following record for two seasons: 4-4-2 and 6-4. These records put them in contention for post season play, but as those respective seasons moved along, the team fell short of the playoffs. At that time, a local newspaper's sports reporter described this as as a wonderful success story about a football program that had turned the corner! I greatly enjoyed watching the games and cheering for my team those years - and was likewise excited about my high school team.
One of things I've enjoyed about Powell Valley football during the Coach Robbins era is that season results other area schools would celebrate as a wonderful success, are desribed as problems for the Vikings.
It is a fine compliment to the boys in blue.

Middle School/ JV means nothing

Re: powell valley football problems
PV will never be back stronger than ever, the teams from the early 90's to 2001 are some of the best teams to play in this area. You can't judge anything by pnut football. I played at Coeburn and we were champs every year in pnut, going undefeated 2 of the seaons and you see what that translated to on the varsity level. Also, suprbeast is right about JV also, you can't really take too much from that. Some schools use 8th, 9th, and 10th graders(that dont get much pt on varsity) and I've even seen a couple cases that 11th graders played in a couple jv games. Only thing that matters is what happens on the Varsity level. I do think PV football will be back, don't know if it will be next year or 3-5 years but PV is like GC, they don't rebuild they reload.

Re: powell valley football problems
I would have to diagree middle school and jv football is what feeds the varsity team without the middle school team you do not have a high school team

I don't know how they are now but in the past GC was known to load up a JV team with older players. Never did know why.

Re: powell valley football problems
GC was known to load up a JV team with older players. I will have what he is drinking. GC is known for bring up the 7th grade to play on the 8th grade.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
Let me put it this way. I have seen some of their 8th grade teams up close and personal. I was just making an observation. I don't care if they play the teachers. MAkes no difference at all to me.

Re: powell valley football problems
Talent is Talent and PV has been going downhill since Julius.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
True. And the coaching has gone in the same direction since Barry left for GC.

Not sure I agree. I think PV has some tremendous talent this year, especially in the junior class. I just don't think the coaches are able to extract it for whatever reason. Maybe the fact that PV had alot of seniors last year who were only in it for themselves has carried over some to this year - not that the current players aren't team players, but the senior class last year didn't teach the current players to be team players. Any team must have some on-the-field leadership.
-
Re: powell valley football problems
I can't beleive you think the seniors on last years team were leaders. You had very few boys in that class that wasn't nothing but trouble making thugs. Leading in the wrong direction.

To paraphrase him, he said they didn't behave like leaders.

You wouldn't believe the kids that played JV football that didn't play Varsity and the other way around when i was in middle school/ high school

That, and players playing totally different positions in JV vs. where they ended up in varsity.

Re: powell valley football problems
hell you think you have problems everyday someone else in pound is praying crabtree quits even the players what a new coach they want one so bad most of them are probably gonna not play or transfer
-
Re: powell valley football problems
i just wish that the people from pound would ban together and get something done about it and maybe i would bring my kid back to pound, i hear crabtree spread that rumor anyway
-
Re: powell valley football problems
that is false. this year they have some freshman and sophomores playing and starting on varsity and they do not drop them back to play on the junior varsity. only the ones that get very little to no playing time on varsity.even our junior varsity baseball team last year was ALL 8th graders. how far in the PAST are you talking about ?
