UVA-Wise Field.....
Went up to the field today to position my cars in the correct spots for tomorrow and noticed the field was a solid sheet of ice with about 30 people working on it with shovels.
Heard they called out coaches from all teams to come help and had to turn on the lights to get it ready. It was about 4:00 and they had about 20 yards cleared. Hope there is some sunshine in store for the games on Saturday because the field will need it.
Glad I got 3 cars up there to get some great spots on the hill, I didn't feel like getting up at the butt crack of dawn to sit in the freezing cold for 14 hours.
Best of luck to all four teams tommorrow, it should be a cold, fun day of football between the 4 best teams in the Region.

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Will this be the largest crowd ever up at UVA-Wise?
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
I would imagine it will be close to last year. The cold may keep quite a few at home.

IMO the cold will keep several away and Lebanon won't bring as many as PV did last year so I don't think this will be the largest ever.

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
You guys are right about the temperature. IIRC, I don't think it was quite as chilly last year. It's going to be blisteringly cold tomorrow for sure.

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
there is a thing called a tarp if they use it lol
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Then shuck out the money to purchase one that big and they will use it

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
it makes sense to me that if they are gonna make the field one of the best around why not put the money in to get a tarp for it im not knocking the college but it just makes sense,
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Because they invested in a treatment agent (That is what I call it b/c I don't know the technical name) before the season started to "clean" and help preserve the field from weather. If you go onto the field it is not the best in the area for a turf field imo. They are having to glue the seams back together from the wear and tear. Give it another 5-7 years and they will have to overhaul it or even replace it.
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
i say field turf will be a good possibility then in my opinion make it like salem or harrisonburg
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Hopefully they will have to replace it and go with field turf. A tarp would be an unnecessary investment for astroturf IMO. They just need a snow blowing machine if they wanted to move snow occassionally.
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Doesn't Richlands have field turf?
If so, I don't think the budget would allow for that kind of spending at this point in time. Remeber, we are building a $30 million convocation center, plus all the other construction going on around campus.
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
just like for the stadium that did not come from public funds did it didnt it all come from private donations
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
and its not like they gotta build the whole thing just tear up the damn astro and put in the field turf!
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
As far as I know, Carl Smith's family and Betty Humprey's family gave donations, but I'm not 100% sure if the entire project cost was covered by those donations. I'm would imagine by the donations that at least 90% of it would have been covered.

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Yes, Richlands, Honaker and Graham all play on field turf fields. Rumor has it Castlewood may have it in another year as well.
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Another question, did Miller contribute funds to Honaker's as I head heard he did, which would only make sense.

One more season on the current turf and the plans are to install field turf.

Not worth the investment. How many times in the history of the field were they still playing football when it snowed?
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
I agree, a few shovels and some backpower will do the trick a lot cheaper.
Field turf is definitely the way to go.
CarolinaBlue, I don't think Miller invested in the field, instead it was the owner of Emats who done both Honaker and Richlands field and has been rumored to be making the same offer to Castlewood.
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
They have a zamboni looking thing that does help vaccum up water, if it still works!
-
Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
yep, Emats made a MAJOR dent in the $750K cost at both Richlands (Emats Field @ Ernie Hicks Stadium) and Honaker (Fuller Field @ Emats Stadium).

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
I know someone made a thread a few months ago talking about the worse places to get out of after a game. By far and it is not even close, UVA Wise. For the third year straight it takes me 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot, you would think they would have it down by now. Huge Cluster *^&% up there.
Great game though, Congrats to the Wave! Do the LPD proud and bring home some gold.

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....

Re: UVA-Wise Field.....
Both of my hands were completely purple after the game because I didn't wear any gloves. I had on plenty of other clothing, but my hands definitely took the punishment, LOL. It was pretty cold tonight, but luckily the wind wasn't bad or else it would have been absolutely agonizing.

I had a hand warm around my waist like the players wear with gloves and some hot hands and 2 shirts and a big jacket but only wore jeans and nothing else on my legs so my legs got the worst of it haha
