Kiffin already in trouble?

South Carolina's Steve Spurrier questioned whether new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin broke an NCAA rule when he called a recruit a day before he was introduced as the Volunteers' new coach.

According to a story published on VolQuest.com, part of the Rivals' network, Kiffin and former Gamecocks recruiting coordinator David Reaves called Tampa running back Jarvis Giles on Sunday and left him voice messages.

"You're supposed to have passed the NCAA test and be on board, I think. But maybe he was just calling him as an interested observer," Spurrier said today, laughing. "I don't know. But technically to be able to recruit you're supposed to pass the NCAA test."

Wow, kid. Unless you're Nick Saban, it usually takes at least a winning season before opposing coaches start accusing you of recruiting violations. They're already accepting you in the club! (If you're going to get accused, anyway, just make sure your next alleged violation really counts).

Meanwhile, Kiffin was determined to show during his introduction today that he may be naive and unprepared to lead a major program, but he's not backing down: Echoing Jim Tressel's "In 310 days in Ann Arbor" speech at Ohio State, Kiffin told reporters "It's going to be fun hearing 'Rocky Top' after we beat Florida next year." Cute, but a little forced.

I'm not saying Tennessee's not going to beat Florida next year in Gainesville. But has Lane Kiffin ever heard "Rocky Top"? Played 200 times over the course of three hours? He's not from Tennessee, you know; he hasn't been immunized to the repetition, or bred to appreciate the intricate sublimity of "Corn from a jar." Win or lose, by the end of the game, he'll be calling his agent about NFL openings just to get away from it.

If he was there a year sooner maybe he could have paid and got Julio Jones.

in all reality the deal may have been done before his "official introduction" in which case it wouldnt matter what he does as he was already the coach

I think he passed his recruiting test last week.

Personally I think UT will regret firing Fulmer in the long run

Nope, just being honest. At first everyone will be on the bandwagon and the excitement of a new coach and philosophy, but give it a few years and we'll see if fans are calling for his head as well.

fans should have been calling for fatboys head for years but he rode the wave of the NC for 5 years after that wave hot the beach

He even said in his press conference that he had to come in a few days early and pass the test so he could go ahead and get in touch with recruits.

Spurrier is just pissed that he is taking his Recruiting CO with him and Jarvis Giles who was feeling more comfortable with USC after de-committing from UT a few weeks ago. Kiffin has already contacted Giles and IMO will commit back to UT because he is an early graduate and will enroll in the Spring so he has to make a quick decision.

Gotta love the Ole' Ball Coach, he is already scared of someone half his age.

I read the blog earlier. Seems to me if he hadn't been named the coach yet, then he was just "Joe Citizen". It's a free country, you can call anybody you want.

i'm not gonna speculate on what Kiffin did...don't really care


but "Joe Citizen" actually cannot call anyone he wants...anytime a university is brought into the conversation without a prior (before said recruit became a football player) relationship with the kid, unless you're an NCAA coach, it is against NCAA rules...you can't do it, i can't do it, Joe SixPack can't do it, Joe the Plumber can't do it

He was already tested and approved by the NCAA so no bubbles no troubles.

Nothing to worry about

Spurrier just saw Lanes wife for the first time and is jealous just like everyone else so he's trying to get him in trouble.

anyone can contact anyone. We have board members here that speak with major D1 football players over the phone and computer all the time. Interviews are done for major websites and all. Heck, one of them even agreed to go golfing. You can pretty much do about anything you want and the ncaa is going to do nothing. They have no control whatsoever. This particular rule was made to make coaches learn rules so they wouldnt create major violations without prior knowledge of stated rules.
