Eric Berry robbed.....
I know I am a little biased because of my love for UT Football and Eric Berry but come on. This is worst than the Woodson/Manning Heisman Trophy debacle. Eric Berry was robbed of the Jim Thorpe Award. The only highlight of our terrible season was watching him each and every week to see what highlight he was gonna make.
Here are the stats, after looking at it, it shouldn't have been close.
Taylor Mays - 49 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 INT
Malcolm Jenkins - 54 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT for 7 yards
Eric Berry - 72 tackles, 3 sacks, 7 INT for 267 yards and 2 TD's
WTF, what a joke. You tell me who was the best defensive back of these three.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
I was just about to post this,I can not believe that he did not win,This is a freaking Joke.I guess this proves if you don't have a winning record you might as well not even be mentioned.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Dude, this coming from a Buckeye fan - Berry should have won that [censored].
Don't get me wrong, I like seeing a Buckeye win an award, but that was ridiculous.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
wwwwooooowwww...
CFB is all about the money and the top programs in the country..I mean come on, Berry had this on lock down
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
I just don't understand it. I could see if there were two candidates that were close but this one should have been a landslide. Kid led the nation in picks, took two of them to the house, broke the SEC record for INT return yards and is only 15 away from breaking the career record by the man who gave the award and he is only a sophomore. Maybe ESPN had something to do with it.
I am not for sure, who actually votes for the award?

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Also, you didn't hear me say this but Victor "Macho" Harris was way more deserving than either Mays or Jenkins. Kinda stupid. I will be venting over this for quite a while. Sorry if it annoys anyone.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
That may be a bigger ass raping than the one Manning got in 97.

Vent away. I agree completely with you.

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
i agree that berry should have won the award
but he is jus a sophomore, that may be why he didnt win.
its kind of aggravating to see malcom jenkins and taylor mays both there, when there were two dbs in the SEC with better stats, DJ Moore and Rashad Johnson
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
What I don't understand is that you could vote for either of the three through a link on ESPN.com. Whoever won the vote on there, actually got 1 vote toward the award. Last night during the ceremony ESPN kept crawling the voting results accross the bottom of the screen. They had the vote reversed. On the website where you vote Berry was in first then Jenkins, then Mays. On ESPN they were crawling on the screen Jenkins, Mays, Berry. Berry had over 50% of the vote on the website.

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Unless my son grows up and is a candidate, I'll never watch that crap again. Total BS.

I would not be suprised. ESPN practically controls the sporting world.

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
guys, its really not that big of a deal. They gave the damn thing to Derrick Strait over Sean Taylor. Did you really expect any logic here?

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Clay Travis ( http://www.claytravis.net ) makes a very good point...
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Last night Eric Berry got screwed out of the Thorpe Award. Which left me wondering how his stats compared to Charles Woodson's stats from 1997--aka the year that Peyton Manning got screwed by ESPN. Let's check out the numbers.
In 1997 Woodson had 8 interceptions that he returned for a grand total of 7 yards (with no touchdowns), 47 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack. On offense and special teams he had 12 receptions for 238 yards and two touchdowns, and 36 punt returns (for an average of 8.1 yards) with 1 returned for a touchdown. Here are the stats for your own perusal.
In 2008 Eric Berry had 72 tackles, 8.5 of those were tackles for a loss, 3 were sacks. He had 7 interceptions which he returned for a total of 265 yards, and two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns. On offense Berry rushed 7 times for 37 yards and had 1 catch for 3 yards. He returned no punts and just one kickoff. Here are Berry's stats.
So comparing these two performances, Woodson had one more total touchdown than Berry, one more interception, and returned punts--one of which went for a touchdown. Berry finished with 25 more tackles, 3.5 more tackles for a loss, 2 more sacks, and, most significantly 258 more return yards on those interceptions. So even if you add in the receiving yardage that Woodson had in 2007 (238 total yards), Berry still outgained Woodson by 20 yards simply by returning his picks. Plus, and this may or may not be key, Berry is a sophomore and Woodson was a junior in these respective seasons.
Now, the only real distinguishing factor is the punt returns. Woodson returned 36 for an average of 8.1 yards with a single touchdown. Which, to be honest, is not that impressive. Don't believe me? Gerald Jones averaged 10.0 yards per punt return for the Vols this year. Do we really believe that if Berry had returned 36 punts he would have done any worse than Woodson? I don't.
So statistically these two seasons are a wash. Berry was every bit the player in 2008that Woodson was in 1997. Michigan fans may argue that Woodson's team was better, and this is indisputable, Michigan won the co-national title in 1997. But was Michigan's defense actually better? Because otherwise you're rewarding Woodson for Michigan's offense of which he had but limited participation. Tennessee's defense finished ranked 4th in the nation in total defense. Where was Michigan in 1997? I can't find it online. But even if Michigan had the best defense in the country the fungible difference between 1 and 4 is inconsequential.
Conclusion: Charles Woodson's 1997 season was no better than Eric Berry's 2008 season.
So at the very least Berry was invited to New York for the ceremony, right?
Of course not.</div></div>

yeah, they use that logic sometimes "Oh, he's got a couple more years to go". The thing is, we see it every year...an excellent player has his career ended by injury. I agree with the rest of you. He was the best by head and shoulders this year.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Sadly, there are 4-5 guys I would put above Jenkins to even be in the Top 3 in this award.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
If I could give out the award I would've gave it to Eric Berry in a heart beat but you guys are some what baised to. Malcolm Jenkins is a damn good football player, have you ever seen the kid play?
I think Berry should've got the award but Jenkins isn't a bad pick either!
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Oh I know he is a good player but to best DB in NCAA Div 1 is a stretch. There have been a couple others who have had better seasons this year and EB happened to be one of them. Victor Harris is another, Michael Hamlin, D.J. Moore, Trimane Goddard, etc. This isn't based on a career, this is based on a season and his wasn't all that great IMO.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
the woodson comparison is dumb really, the thrope isnt the heisman, and woodsons team won a national title, berrys team won three games.
berry was the best S in the nation, it wasnt close, but its jus an award.
mays was a candidate because of his impact on the field, he is such a freak and monster no one comes his way.
at all.
jenkins is the pro potential pick, he is gonna play on sundays next year, and can shut down a teams #1 receiver.
when he single handedly beat purdue, he won this award.
hey, rashad's stats were better than both of them, and somewhat comparable to berry's
if berry has the same season next year, and maybe scored 5 TDs overall, he might win the heisman, for real, if UT is any good.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
True and you put up a lot of good points but it just comes down to 2 things. One Berry played on a piss poor Tennessee team. And Jenkins prolly meant more to his team.
But then again I would've voted for berry

Same can be said for Berry.

Same for Berry. It's not going to happen, but I'd bet you Berry'd go in the draft before Jenkins next year. Just remember the draft positions and we'll have this convo. in two years.
Berry might be the best player to ever play at UT. That's counting Manning, Lewis, White, Atkins, Majors, you name it.

WTF kind of excuse is that after giving the hypesman to tebow last year as what??????? And this year with similar stats to the other two nondeservers is most likely to finish 3rd.

What the fuk difference does it make if the best player in the country is surrounded by dollards they are either the best or not.

berry will be a top ten pick too, i dont know why you guys think im downing him, i said he could win the heisman next year.
better than reggie white?
lung, thats a pretty bold statement, im not sure i go along with that.
the heisman is given to a player who makes his team great, not mediocre.
if berry does the same stats, and UT wins ten games, he could win the heisman.
doesnt mean hes not the best player if he doesnt, but hes not a heisman winner.
i dont think tebow should have won it last year, i think mcfadden should have.
and tebow maybe should win it this year.

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
I was gonna mention Rashad but I figured it would be showing my SEC bias as well.

Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
The only way a defensive player will win the Hypeman is if they play in the Little 11.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
dj moore should be up there too, he had 7 picks and a couple tds as well
jenkins won it the same way laranitus won the butkus last year.
osu really lobbies hard for those awards.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Yeah Moore played really well, I think I had him on my list earlier too lazy to look.
I agree about tOSU lobbying for those type of awards.

Then why do they say it goes to the best player in college football instead of the best contributer to his team.
I say again THE BEST PLAYER IS EITHER THE BEST IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL NO MATTER WHAT HE IS SURROUNDED BY.
Where can it not be said that because of Berry UT had 5 wins and was at best mediocre instead of 2 wins and emabarassing.
Oh yeah Berry did make his team great unless the 4th ranked defense is only mediocre.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
If a team isnt doing good then they dont get the media coverage. And espn will only promote the teams that are doing good that year. After texas tech lost to oklahoma espn quit talking about them and that imo lead to Harrel not being a finalist. The winner will be whoever espn convinces people to vote for. And as much as they were saying stuff about Tebow last night he will win it easily.
Edit: Thats why berry didnt win the award. He was on a bad team that espn did not promote all year.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
It was kinda funny how after Texas Tech beat Texas that Graham Harrell was hands down the Heisman winner than a couple weeks later he dropped to 4th and off the ballot.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
Sam Bradford- 4464 yards, 68% completion, 48 tds 6 ints
Colt mccoy- 3445 yards, 77% completion, 32 tds, 6 ints
Tim Tebow- 2515 yards, 66% completion, 28 tds 2 ints
Graham Harrell- 4747 yards, 71% completion 41 tds 7 ints
He is up there with all 3 of the finalist in passing stats.
-
Re: Eric Berry robbed.....
No doubt, he should be there. If I had to vote it could go either way. 1-4 could be any of them, they are all deserving.

I don't think you're downing him. You and I have had conversations in the past and I know how you feel about him.
Yes. He's better than Reggie ever was at UT. Reggie didn't come on really till his last year at UT.
