OT. Other forums have a Music thread.

I am presenty enjoying a cd entitled Dub Side of the Moon. I can't wait to hear it on Altecs! Would a music thread be possible on this forum?

I'll bite.

Last week's SNL featured some kids called "Fleet Foxes". Vocals are very CSN&Y-ish. I really enjoyed the SNL cut, but was less impressed with the You-Tube cuts I later chased down. Think they're from out Mike G's way, maybe he has some input.

John Prine's gonna be nearby in about a month. I got to catch him with Iris DeMent some years ago, and may have to live off that memory, 'cause I ain't paying $125 for a seat unless it comes with dinner and drinks. (That, and the last weekend of Feb. is traditionally my best shot at a big walleye). ;)

Sorry Mike, I missed your reply somehow. Yeah, the YouTube cuts don't do it for me. Maybe the SNL thing was an exception.

Mah, I heard a couple cuts from your "Dub Side..." last night at a friends. Sort of a "Rasta-Floyd with Mike Phelps on bong" thing. ;)

Just watched the Certifiable DVD(The Police). Very good sound recording. If your speakers are at all 'shouty', Sting's vocals will be very piercing.

I thought the reunion wasn't completely successful with two guys wanting The police to be a Group and one guy wanting them to be a Band with himself as The Leader.

Just my first opinions.:rolleyes:

I'm with you Feesh. I'd love to see Clapton & Winwood. I drove 110 miles to see Clapton's 25th Annual Tour. Only because Mark Knopfler was playing with Clapton. When they did Knopfler's Money For Nothing it brought the house down. So the people who were there knew who Knopfler was. :)

I like Steve Winwood in small doses. I can only take so much of the 70's sound.

I went to the Clapton tour show, St. Paul Xcel, a couple of years back with a large group of old rockers. Really good show. Clapton has lost a little since I saw him with Cream in 1970 but haven't we all. Well worth a trip but not better than a lunker walleye, IMO.

Yeah, it's always a compromise ain't it? :)

That's why I have a CD spinner in the boat. The local 'eyes aren't much into Eric though, they seem to prefer Buddy Guy or Albert King. :D

A bit of trivia, the guy that wrote those lyrics later worded all the Wizard of OZ tunes. He was later disenfranchised when his name appeared on the Hollywood Blacklist as a suspected Commie. Ironically, he spent his final days hoping someone would spare him a dime. :(

Marhall, when you go to Youtube and find a video, look to the right is a box with the urls in it. select the one that says URL by hitting Control C then paste it into your reply by hitting Control V.

Pretty good, but I've learned to avoid the ones that are "looking for", "in search of", or otherwise "seeking". They've already got some unrealistic perfect man in mind, and that ain't me. ;)

The fish gods have been appeased now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. Like recordings, artists, etc you consider really exceptional.

I picked up a Vanguard lp nearly 40 years ago - Roosevelt Charles: Blues, Prayer, Work and Trouble Songs.

This track is not on it and I would appreciate any information on other albums by him.

It appears that was his only album, which was recorded while he was incarcerated at Louisiana's infamous state prison at Angola. He had at least one cut on the compilation Angola Prisoners’ Blues, and perhaps was featured on other similar anthologies. Considering the bloody reputation and the repressive history of Angola, it's not too likely he made it out alive. Talk about some inspiration for the blues... :(

Found a bit more. Your album was recorded by folklorist Frederick Oster, who also recorded "Angola Prison Worksongs" for his Folklyric Records in 1959, now re-released on Arhoolie Records. RC is featured on 2 cuts.

I've listened to those Lomax recordings. The ones that I had acess to, back in those days, were on some type of small acetate disc. The recordings were so raw and original you could hear all of the background noise and the incidental recording gear interference. None the less, absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, they were cut on a portable aluminum disk machine, under...well...less than ideal conditions. The Library of Congress is/will be releasing a large part of the collection on CD. Coming soon to a library near you.

Jools Holland saw Steve playing at the Australian East Coast Blues Festival and put him on the Live On Jools Holland show in the U.K.

I just learned a neat new way to browse YouTube vids (thanks CNET!).

Pick a YT video of interest.

In the URL, replace the word "watch" with "warp.swf".

Hit Enter. Explore.

An example, if you started with the "First Electrical Process Record...1925", the altered URL gives you this;
