This is getting dumber and dumber...
the NFL's newest rules.
Four safety proposals passed at NFL owners meetings - ESPN@@AMEPARAM@@http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4013296@@AMEPARAM@@4013296
Next year at the Owner's meetings I hope they decide to dress the QBs in pink dresses. This is getting so stupid.
Re: This is getting dumber and dumber...
Saw this on ESPN the other day, but they were saying it was 7 changes altogether and 5 were about safety. I agree with the helmet to helmet or shots to the head, but thats about it. They were also talking about extending the regular season by 1 or maybe 2 games.

Dear Lord....in 25 years, the NFL will be a touch football league.

The thing that makes me sick about the "Brady Rule" is that the same thing happened to Carson Palmer and there was no uproar or rule change. Maybe it was the fact it happened against the Steelers who the officials and comissioner suck off...or maybe that it happened to the Bengals who the NFL could care less about. The NFL seems to cater to teams like the Pats (tuck rule my a$$)...wonder how many times Goodell shows up at Pats practice to powder Brady's balls and diaper him?...

lets not forget to put those sissy linebackers in purple dresses because Hines Ward might make a block on them too.

I actually don't have a huge problem with that rule. Anytime you a guy who isn't even looking can get hit in the head, it probably isn't going to turn out good with the size, strength, speed of these guys. Besides, the offense usually gets all the help in the NFL, and this one helps the defense out a little and prevents injuries....
I agree with everything Sup-rbeast said. Anytime anything negative happens to Bill Belicheat and the holy Patriots, the NFL comes along and helps them out. But that is the dumbest rule ever. Say its the last play in the superbowl and the other team is on the ten about to win it, you blitz and somebody cuts you. Are you supposed to dive UP from the ground to hit the QB, stand up, or just lay there and let him throw it? Pretty soon LBers are gonna have to bring the NFL rule book along on the field with em as they blitz.

And a QB has that chance every passing play, as he is looking down field, someone comes from his blind side..........
I'm not saying these rules are getting crazy, but you can't say it is ok to protect a LB but not a QB. These rules are happening now because of the size, strength and speed these guys have. I think the teams of the 70's would lose 9 out of 10 times they played a team from today, that includes the 70's Steelers.
Re: This is getting dumber and dumber...
Hines Ward could have still made that block effectively without leading with his helmet/shoulderpads/forearm to the guy's upper torso and head. That is pretty much just a cheap shot, and this new rule doesn't take away the ability to still get your job done.
The new rule against defensive players does though. The QBs and offenses seem to always get the upperhand in rule changes. You put Marvin Harrison in the game years ago, no way in hell does he catch that crazy amount of catches he does. They might as well tie a defenders hands behind his back when he he is going after the passer. It's just stupid. It is a tough game, and QBs need to be held to the same accountability as all other players. Like the idiotic slide rule. Players actually get hurt trying to avoid the QB when he slides. If he has the balls to take off down the field, he should have the balls to get hit square in the mouth like everyone else. Football is a tough game, and the "leader" of the team should have to prove he is the toughest of all.
People say that QBs going down early is bad for the game, like Brady this year. If Brady doesn't go down, the Matt Cassell story never happens. If Bledsoe didn't get hurt, the Patriots wouldn't have won all of those rings. But the NFL brass doesn't see it like that, so they make all these rules to protect their cash cows. I'm sick of it.
Mike Golic ran had a soundbit a few mornings ago about what the league will sound like in a few years...It was just a soundclip of a ref making a call. It was five or ten year penalty because a defender looked at the QB.

That lick was as clean and as nice as it gets. If you cant block the guy in the upper torso you are only leaving a foot of area to hit someone because they cannot block below the waste. This rule is stupid, just like I hate the horse collar rule. The new diving rule as I call it is stupid also.
