Anyone else think this is total BS?

HONOLULU (AP)?Hawaii coach Greg McMackin was suspended for 30 days without pay and has volunteered to take an additional 7 percent pay cut from his $1.1 million salary for making a derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame?s chant before last year?s Hawaii Bowl.

In a room full of players, assistant coaches and boosters, a tearful McMackin addressed reporters late Friday after meeting with school officials for several hours.

?I just want to say I made a big mistake. I want to apologize to everyone and anyone that I offended with my remarks,? he said. ?I?m committed to do whatever I can to use this as a life lesson to learn from my mistake. When we make mistakes, we have to learn from it and make better people of ourselves.?

In total, McMackin will lose roughly $169,000 from his salary this year. But the real damage seems to be to his reputation and to the university.

Athletic director Jim Donovan said McMackin will remain with the team on a voluntary basis during the suspension. He said the coach violated university policies. McMackin met with Donovan and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw.

?We all recognize that Coach McMackin made a serious mistake that has hurt many people and brought negative attention to our state and university,? Hinshaw said. ?He is clearly remorseful?as well as he should be.?

The second-year Warriors coach has repeatedly apologized for the comments made during a media briefing Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference football preview in Salt Lake City. He used a slur usually targeted at gays to describe Notre Dame?s chant performed at a banquet before last year?s Hawaii Bowl.

?I?m very disappointed in myself. I hope to make up for some for the pain I caused others,? he said. ?I made a mistake. Now I have to show the leadership in dealing with the football program and building respect for all people in our community.?

Wiping away tears from his swollen-red eyes, McMackin said he?s offended the gay and lesbian community and now he wants to work with them to use the incident as a ?teachable moment for me and hopefully others.?

?I should?ve never brought Notre Dame?s program up in my interview,? McMackin said. ?I?m sorry that I said something so hurtful and I?m very remorseful.?

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis on Friday said the Fighting Irish program was offended by the comments but has accepted his apology and will move on.

?Coach McMackin demonstrated poor judgment when, while making comments critical of our football program, he used a derogatory word,? Weis said in a statement. ?Speaking only for our football program, we were offended by the remarks.?

Weis said it was in the best interests of the Notre Dame program to address the issue promptly, put it to rest and focus on the upcoming season.

The Fighting Irish routed the Warriors 49-21 in the Hawaii Bowl for their first postseason victory in 15 years. McMackin called it the worst loss in his 40 years of coaching.

McMackin?s comments have stunned this state, where the story has created a stir online and has led the front pages of both Honolulu newspapers. The headline in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin read, ?Mack Under Attack.?

His comments have been sharply rebuked by everyone from Gov. Linda Lingle to gay and lesbian groups.

Before joining the Warriors, McMackin spent three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as associate head coach and linebackers coach under Dennis Erickson. He has also served as defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and several college programs, including Texas Tech, Miami, Navy, Utah and Idaho.




As sensitive as the comment was to some, being suspended 30 days without pay is WAY too much for nothing really. Society is getting way too sensitive.

It was the Universities decision, he brought a lot of negative publicity to them, so they're making him pay. Oh well, he'll think before he speaks next time.

The media is getting terrible though, no one has free speech anymore. If you want to use words you want to you get punished.

I think its Bull****. It isn't like thge Honolulu pink booted fairy dancers are gonne be buying season tickets any time soon. When you're the head coach or anyone in a position like that, you can't make those comments and expect to not catch heat. Isn't about "free speech" when you're making comments, just as bad if he had dropped the n-word.

Everyone is always complaing about political correctness, until someone says something offensive that pertains to their group - race, religion etc. Because a group is a minority or slurs like that have been acceptable over the years, it doesn't mean it's right. Gays have been treated much like blacks were...beaten to death for no reason(that includes police officers), called names like this(which caused an 11 year old to commit suicide a few months ago), not allowed to marry, slaughtered in the holocaust just like the jews, burnt at the stake...but that's ignored because of the consensus that its "their choice". His accomplice, Jared Wilson, was sentenced to 20 years.
* On September 22, 2000, Ronald Gay entered a gay bar in Roanoke, Virginia and opened fire on the patrons, killing Danny Overstreet, 43 years old, and severely injuring six others. Ronald said he was angry over what his name now meant, and deeply upset that three of his sons had changed their surname. * On October 2, 2004, multiple assailants in Waverly, Ohio, attacked Daniel Fetty, a gay man who was hearing-impaired and homeless. Three men received sentences ranging from seven years to life.
* On January 28, 2005, Ronnie Antonio Paris, a three-year-old boy living in Tampa, Florida, died due to brain injuries inflicted by his father, Ronnie Paris, Jr. According to his mother and other relatives, Ronnie Paris, Jr., repeatedly slammed his son into walls, slapped the child's head, and "boxed" him because he was concerned the child was gay and feared his son would grow up a sissy. * On February 27, 2005, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 21-year-old James Maestas was assaulted outside a restaurant, then followed to a hotel and beaten unconscious by men who called him "***got" during the attack. Although all of his attackers were charged with committing a hate crime, none was sentenced to prison.
* On March 11, 2005, Jason Gage, an openly gay man, was murdered in his Waterloo, Iowa, apartment by an assailant, Joseph Lawrence, who claimed Gage had made sexual advance to him. Gage was bludgeoned to death with a bottle, and stabbed in the neck, probably post-mortem, with a shard of glass. Lawrence was sentenced to fifty years in prison.
* On February 2, 2006, 18-year-old Jacob D. Robida entered a bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts, confirmed that it was a gay bar, and then attacked patrons with a hatchet and a handgun, wounding three. He fatally shot himself three days later.
* On June 10, 2006, Kevin Aviance, a female impressionist, musician, and fashion designer, was robbed and beaten in Manhattan by a group of men who yelled anti-gay slurs at him. Four assailants pleaded guilty and received prison sentences.
* On July 30, 2006, six men were attacked with baseball bats and knives after leaving the San Diego, California Gay Pride festival. One victim was injured so severely that he had to undergo extensive facial reconstructive surgery. Three men pleaded guilty in connection with the attacks and received prison sentences. A 15-year-old juvenile also pleaded guilty.
* On October 8, 2006, Michael Sandy was attacked by four young heterosexual men who lured him into meeting after chatting online, while they were looking for gay men to rob. He was struck by a car while trying to escape his attackers, and died five days later without regaining consciousness.
* On February 27, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan Andrew Anthos, a 72-year-old disabled gay man was beaten with a lead pipe by a man who was shouting anti-gay names at him. Anthos died 10 days later in the hospital.
* On March 15, 2007 in Wahneta, Florida, Ryan Keith Skipper, a 25 year old gay man was stabbed to death. Four suspects were arrested for the crime. The Sheriff is calling it a hate crime.
* On May 12, 2007, Roberto Duncanson was murdered in Brooklyn, New York. He was stabbed to death by Omar Willock, who claimed Duncanson had flirted with him.
* May 16, 2007, Sean William Kennedy, 20, was walking to his car from Brew's Bar in Greenville, SC when Andrew Moller, 18, got out of another car and approached Kennedy. Investigators said that Moller made a comment about Kennedy's sexual orientation, and threw a fatal punch because he didn't like the other man's sexual preference.
* On December 8, 2007 25 year old gay man Nathaniel Salerno was attacked by four men on a Metro train in Washington, DC. The men called him ***got while they beat him.
* In February 2008, Duanna Johnson, a transsexual woman, was beaten by a police officer while she was held in the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center in Tennessee. Johnson said the officers reportedly called her a ?***got? and ?he-she,? before and during the incident. In November 2008, she was found dead in the street, reportedly gunned down by three unknown individuals.
* On February 12, 2008, Lawrence "Larry" King, a 15 year old junior highschool student was shot by a classmate at E.O. Green School in Oxnard, California. He was taken off life support after doctors declared him brain dead on February 15.[146] According to Associated Press reports, "prosecutors have charged a 14-year-old classmate with premeditated murder with hate-crime and firearm-use enhancements".
* In Rochester, New York on March 16, 2008 police say Lance Neve was beaten unconscious because Neve was gay. A man attacked Neve at a bar leaving him with a fractured skull, and a broken nose. Jesse Parsons was sentenced to more than five years in prison for the assault.
* In Baltimore County, Maryland on May 29, 2008 eighteen year old Steven Parrish?a member of the Young Swans subgroup of the Bloods?was murdered by Steven T. Hollis III and Juan L. Flythe after they found "gay messages" on his cell phone. They felt having a gay member would make their gang appear weak and that by killing Parrish they could prevent that perception.
* 17 July 2008, In Colorado, 18 year old Angie Zapata, a trans woman, was beaten to death two days after meeting Allen Ray Andrade. The case was prosecuted as a hate crime, and Andrade was found guilty of first degree murder on April 22 2009.
* September 7, 2008 - Tony Randolph Hunter, 27, and his partner were attacked and beaten near a gay bar in Washington DC. Hunter later died from his injuries on September 18. Police are investigating it as a possible hate crime.
* September 13, 2008 in Denver, Colorado 26 year old Nima Daivari was attacked by a man who called him ***got. The police that arrived on the scene refused to make a report of the attack.
* September 15, 2008 - A Bourbonnais, Illinois elementary school bus driver was charged with leading a homophobic attack on a 10-year old student passenger. The boy was taunted by the driver who then encouraged other students to chase and beat the child.

* On November 7, 2008 in Newton, NC the home of openly gay Melvin Whistlehunt was destroyed by arsonists. Investigators found homophobic graffiti spray painted on the back of the house.[160]
* On November 14, 2008, a 22 year old transgender woman, Lateisha Green, was shot and killed by Dwight DeLee in Syracuse, NY because he thought she was gay. Local news media reported the incident with her legal name, Moses "Teish" Cannon. DeLee was convicted of first-degree manslaughter as a hate crime on July 17, 2009 and faces up 25 years in prison. This was only the second time in the nation?s history that a person was prosecuted for hate crime against a transgender person.
* On December 7, 2008 Romel Sucuzhanya, a 31 year old straight Ecuadorean and his brother Jose, were attacked on a Brooklyn, New York street for appearing to be gay and for being Latino; they were walking arm-in-arm, which is normal for brothers in their culture. Romel later died from his injuries.
* On December 12, 2008 in Richmond, California a 28 year old lesbian was kidnapped and gang raped by four men who made homophobic remarks during the attack.
* On December 27, 2008 in Dayton, Ohio 24 year old Nathan Runkle was brutally assaulted outside a gay nightclub.
* On February 15, 2009 in New York City Efosa Agbontaen and Branden McGillvery-Dummett were attacked by four young men with glass bottles and box cutters who used anti-gay slurs during the attack. Agbontaen and McGillvery-Dummett both required emergency room treatment for their injuries.
* On February 18, 2009 two men were arrested in Stroudsburg, PA for the stabbing death of gay veteran Michael Goucher.
* On March 14, 2009 a gay couple leaving a concert in Newark, New Jersey were attacked by 15 teens. Josh Kehoe and Bobby Daniel Caldwell were called "***gots" and beaten. Caldwell suffered a broken jaw.
* On March 23, 2009 in Seaside, Oregon two gay men were attacked and left lying unconscious on a local beach. The men regained consciousness and were treated at a nearby hospital.
* On Monday, April 6, 2009, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, an 11 year old boy in Springfield, Massachusetts, hanged himself with an extension cord after being bullied all school year by his peers. His peers said he "acted feminine" and was gay.
* On Saturday April 11, 2009 a gay man in Gloucester, Massachusetts was attacked and beaten by as many as six people outside a bar. Justin Goodwin, 36, of Salem suffered a shattered jaw, broken eye socket, broken nose and broken cheek bone.




That's just since I was born , not counting the 80's/70's/60's, the holocaust(and long before) and also just that was just in the U.S....it's happened in almost every country for centuries. Also not taking into consideration numerous attacks that were ignored, even some of the judges were bigots...

You have to see it as a problem, which it's not unless looked at from a religious standpoint. Being gay won't kill you, make your cholesterol go up, cause cancer etc. etc. You would have to see it as a problem for you to be willing to fix it and there would actually have to be a way to 'fix' genetics.

Second question, I don't know what causes that...mental illness probably, you can have a family history of mental illness or it can develop over time depending what problems trigger it. So, that's a really hard question to answer. There's a huge difference though, one is a threat to society and one isn't.

I never said it was in there head (Something a Psychologist can do anyhing bout) I said geans and if that is the case then ge therpy would work (our bodys are nothing but big chemical computers that will o as they are rogramed i.e. o choise in sex orenation)

As for being gay not killing you I agree to apoint but Homosexualyin the population (just like leftys) have on avg a shorter lifespan (many theorys as to why that is)

What I am asking is should parents be able in the fucture to correct that genetic disorder/varenance? (I would compare it to having a child that is deaf (which is also non life threaning) that could hav that issue resolved with colcular implants)
