SWVA Youth Football League
I know lot of you here have kids or relatives playing youth football. We should post game updates and scores.
The Indians had their first game yesterday at Appalachia. The crunch bunch score was
Indians 44 Bulldogs 8. I didn't stay for the D1 or D2 game.
If any one has the results of other games so far this season, please post them. I am looking for the following scores.
Crunch Bunch 8/29/09 Appy ? @ Pound ? Coeburn 6 @ Clintwood 26
9/01/09 Pound ? @ Coeburn ? Wise 44 @ Appy 8
D1 and D2 Games
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
Appy's D1 beat Wise 8-6,and the D-2 clobbered Wise 30-0 or so. The D-2 bunch from last year has mozied onto the 8th grade, where our crew beat Abingdon 14-8 and Virginia High (middle) 8-6 in a barnburner in a jamboree at VHS Monday night. The 8th grade will play at Pound tomorrow night at 6.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
thanks, how come norton doesn't participate in the league?
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
Norton, like PV chooses to participate in-house. There are many pros and cons to both methods.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
are there enough kids per age division to have their own league in Norton?

From what I've observed and heard, Norton has some coaches that take this stuff way too seriously!!
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
not true at all unlike other towns that dont let kids play but on dead ball kickoffs norton tries to get everyone to play so thats y they are going in house and if u think that norton has coaches that get into it too much u obviously are not watching the games close enough then!!
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
IMO, going in house gives more kids an opportunity to play more in the games and develop more as a player. If you have enough kids, in house is the only way to go.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
Like supr-beast said, it helps develop players more and gets each kid a ton more reps than they would originally see in other youth leagues. I for one am glad they went in house, that is the way it was when I played back in the day. So if you got the kids for it, do it.
And as far as coaches getting too far into it, that is laughable, you obviously haven't paid attention to other coaches in other areas as well.

A couple years ago I watched some of those games..the way most all the coaches from most all the teams acted was asinine...I tripped balls.

and I can list several huge advantages for playing in the league. I played in-house in p-nut,and watched my son go in-house his first year,so I have enough insight on it to list the differences. BTW I respect folk's rights and reasons to go in-house,and am cool with it (different strokes for different folks). Here's why I like the league better:
1. (BIG reason). If you are playing in-house,you are running the same offense and defense as the varsity (or you should be). The kids do not get a look at anything different. When my son steps on the field in a couple of years to play PV or,Norton ,he's probably going to have a better grasp at what he'll be facing because playing in the league has given him the chance to see multiple sets, formations, and schemes.
2. The excitement factor: You get kinda tired of playing the same 'ol multiple times a year. The kids in the league load the bus fired up,feeling like the
"big boys" with that "high-school" feeling. I got tired of playing the Falcons 3-4x a year, and my son got tired of playing the other Wise the same.
3. In-house fighting: We at Wise (as did the other communities in the league had problems because folks chose to get immature). Now they get to fight WITH OTHER COMMUNITIES who have ignorant, childish fans (some light humor there folks). Joining the league eliminated a huge problem there.
Like I said,we could punch and counter-punch on this issue, but playing in-house works for you all,and the league works for us. The kids are learning X's and O's and having fun (and that's what matters most)
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
I always preferred in house more, and still do. It gives kids a change to play and talk trash at school when they beat a friend's team. Of course I only played baseball and basketball back in the day, and it was all in house then.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
i have heard a rumor that two appy players are being singled out one in D1 and one in D2 a rule was made that all players would weigh in before the season and agreed to by all the coaches and that was that. but now since appy D1 and D2 are proving to be tough someone said some of the coaches of the losing teams have decided to try to change the rules and make those two players weigh in again or before every game or something. is it fact or fiction???
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
We had to weigh players before each game. That is the way it is. If there's a question, they have a right to put a kid on a scale.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
so why not do it before the games instead of waiting untill after the game is decide.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
There is a rule like that in BSG as well...but the kids just weigh at the 1st of the year...and the only ones that weigh are the bigger kids who are gonna be in the backfield...makin them weigh every game is asinine, and exposes one of the many drawbacks of Youth Football League play (That the folks from each community forget it's only P-Nut football and that many of the players are closer to toddler age than teen age)
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
i agree with a weight limit. its to low in my opinion and to have a couple kids bust there but to make weight at the begining of the season and then maybe gain a pound or two to single those kids out because they are good athletes is crazy. dont wait till you lose a game you thought you were going to win and then complain.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
In BSG it was 115 lbs. for a long time...don't know what it is now. But to me that's a fair weight limit considering the kids are 12 and under.

This rule was changed for the 2007 season and contiunes today. Once the league president and varsity coach sign off on a weight, that is their playing weight. It's like the "league age" for LL baseball. I have gotten some phone calls regarding these two boys. Roger and Jeremy signed off on it. What is on paper is what their playing weight says. This rule was changed to keep parents from feeding their kids laxitives or starving them during a season just to make weight. Maybe next season we will do a PPK and have league weigh ins together. What we have to remeber is that its a kids game. We are out there to give guidance. I have personally made mistakes over the years and have acted in ways that I wish I could take back. But that is where we can use ourselves as examples for our players and show them the errors of our ways. I love being in the league and watching the kids grow from ALL towns. Yes, I'm from Appy and have been in Wise for the last 12 years. But I have also gotten to know many kids from all the towns and enjoy watching them all.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
I remember we played in the Lee County league my 6th and 7th grade years. I had to strip down to my spandex to make the 120 weight to keep QBing our team.
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
That is the very reason for the weigh ins at the begining of the season. I don't want my son in a room full of strangers, stripped down to his underware!
Re: SWVA Youth Football League
It was in a room full of strangers. It was at Pennington in front of the stands full of strangers!
