SWVa top 10 after 3 weeks

After looking at the records and opponets of teams from what I consider SWVa football (LPD, Clinch Mountain, Cumberland, Black Diamond, Southwest, Hogoheegee) this is how I rate the top 10 thus far....


1. Gate City (2-1)
2. Tazewell (2-1)
3. Richlands (2-1)
4. JI Burton (3-0)
5. Lebanon (2-1)
6. Clintwood (3-0)
7. Virginia High (2-1)
8. Grundy (3-0)
9. JJ Kelly (3-0)
10. Holston (3-0)

Honorable Mention: Hurley, Marion, Pound, Chilhowie, George Wythe

Bubble Teams (hurt by schedule thus far): Graham, Powell Valley, Haysi

having kelly and burton in the top 10 and leaving out pv is laughable

Ranking Grundy above JJK is also laughable

Burton is too high and PV should be on there.

Plus if he's going by who've they've beaten, I'd say Clintwood beating a 3A Tennessee school who has at least 4 college level prospects playing for them by almost 30 points would get a little more credit than that. That was a team that went 8-2 last year, returned everyone as they were all soph's and jr's last year, won their district last year, made the playoffs, and still got drilled. Yeah, but put 2 one loss teams ahead of them, even one that gave up over 50 two weeks ago. Makes perfect sence. Also makes perfect sence to not put PV in the top 10 even though they lost by less than a td last week to your #3 while losing one of their best players early in the game. Lets not even get into how absolutely rediculous it is to have Grundy in any poll. Could they have found any worse teams to play this year?

Tazewell is no # 2 team and Gate City is no #1 team.

Grundy hasn't played giant-killers either. In fact PH or Pound could compete much better vs Grundy than they did vs JJK. I have no doubt about that.

There's a good chance of that. That was a toss up. Consider it a 4th place tie. ;) Neither have played a team with a pulse, but they've both done what they're supposed to. It's hard to tell really what you have with either.

I totally agree, except I think Abingdon is slightly better than PH or Pound or TW.

The region is way down, when you look at it like this, none of those teams aside from the top two have really any chance of making a big splash outside of the region.
PV could give the region fits if they make the playoffs, their record is deceiving, but it just seems that GC and CWood are miles ahead of everyone right now.

What about the win over Appy? Appy really isn't that bad, they have to be better than an Pound or TW?

IMO the win over Appy told me something different. I dont believe Appy is good at all. Some people just have to realize that Burton isnt that good this year.

Appy might not be, it could just be where they were so bad last year, they have come along way. I really didn't have high hopes for JIB losing what they did, the passing game gives me some hope though. Not saying it's great, but it's there this year, instead of handing it to Miles most plays like I thought would be the game plan this season. I'm just not sold on Kelly yet.

Ah. That team was... bad. But I guess 3-0 is good enough for a 10 spot. For now.

You and I have something in common then,as I am not sold on the Raiders. Both JJK and JIB are both untested at this point.

I DO think Appy is a better team than last years bunch however there oinly win to this point was to a team that TW beat by 50+ points so I am not sure that is a good measureing stick


I need to see Wise vs better competition to make a final judgment on them but to this point they could not look better


Clintwood is looking good to this point but I think the Lebanon game will tell us alot more about them

PV is better than there record but if they drop many more they will have to win the LPD to get a playoff spot

Burton is about where I thought they would be with Miles they are a very good team with a legit shot at the LPD and Reagion championship and without him they would be 1-2 right now...... That being said the passing game SHOULD make them tougher to defend (till it rains :) )

here is my top 10

1) GC (Not sure how you could put anyone else there the butt whipping by the Sullivan team was something that no SWVA team could have avoided)

2) Richlands (Not 100% sold on them but there only loss was by a FG to my #1 team so...)

3) Lebanon (They got ripped by Tazwell BUT the word is Lebanon had several starters out for displanary reasons in that game and Taz was still unable to score any offencave TDs the game this week vs GC should be a war)

4) Clintwood (They are better than most including myself expected them to be)

5) Burton (They have Miles and IMHO if you put him on Ervintons team they become a top 10 team

6) Kelly (They are probably better than #6 but for now IMHO this is a good spot for them

7) Tazwell (I could be under estamateing them putting them at 7 but after the way GC crushed them I cant do it)

8) PV (If PV had player Clintwood's, Burton's or Kelly's schedule they would be 3-0 right now and not 1-2)

9) Carroll County (If a non tazwell co team is going to win the SWD I think it is CC)

10) Va High (Much improved team but not in Lebanon or GCs class just yet)

Ok, AGAIN I based it on 3 weeks of PLAY not necessarily who I feel the true BEST teams are in that area. The fact remains that SCHEDULE and records DO matter in the end. If you get into simply looking/theorizing the best teams well then your getting into that old debate like the AP and Coaches Poll in FBS or D-IA.... So a couple of notes on my picks.

Clintwood...other than HV they've played and and beat no one.

Kelly....beat no one worth a hoot but have scored significant points and played good D.

Grundy....beat no one.

Holston...a good team but plays NO one.

PV...good team but schedule is going to hurt them unless they step up, going BACK to what won 8 state titles, the I formation will do nothing to help.

Graham...same as PV except the I part.

So with that being established...If I were just theorizing the top 10 it would go as follows as of right now...

1. Gate City
2. Tazewell
3. Richlands
4. Lebanon
5. Clintwood
6. Burton
7. Powell Valley
8. Graham
9. VA High
10. Kelly

Holston possibly could play with Kelly but not the rest, Haysi simply has to beat Honaker and Hurley and they will get a playoff spot. Clintwood I believe is better but needs a comparable opponet, hard to gauge truley how good they are right now. I agree Happy Valley is a good team, IF they were in SWVa...but they arent. Burton is in the same boat but they looked vulnerable against Appy. If and that's a big if a few mistakes were changed by Appy and a few other adjustments, who knows.

Very seriously doubt that Holston could play with JJK this year

WTF difference does that make? Sure this is a SWVa top 10, but if you were just gonna throw out all non-SWVa games, then you'd be ignoring Sullivan South's win over GC (41-14). That means something--South's a really good team, but it's still a loss--and if you're comparing 2-1 to 3-0, that loss has to be taken into account.

Same thing with a win like the one Cwood had over HV. You can't just ignore that by playing it off as "HV isn't in SWVa". That's dumb.

I do like your latest top 10 better than your first one, but that's not saying much b/c your logic doesn't seem very logical to be honest.

I do not think Taz in the #2 team out there and what the heck is Graham doing on this list? since Carlocks passing they are fast becomeing Grundy part 2 in the SWD

I wondered why Graham was there as well. Traditional power yes,god-awful this year yes. The G-Men have looked weak this year.

If you are 30 spots behind MAJOR football powers in all the divisions and classifications (including the big private schools) in Tennessee against schools: Alcoa, Maryville, Brentwood Academy, Riverdale, Montgomery Bell Academy.... I'd have to think you are a pretty good opponent. Compared to being over 230 spots behind powers like these.... especially one of which finished the 2007 season as the #10 ranked team in the nation.

Looking at the LPD not all of SWVA id line em' up like this

Kelly may sneak up on clitnwood of they aren't careful

But then again, JJ Kelly has also play teams most good football teams J.V. Squads could man handle so I guess we'll all see when the games are played.:cool:

Biggest Disappointment is J.I. Burton Seriously where did the thunder go? I suppose it all graduated last season.

I'd be willing to bet a dollar against an apple that kelley couldn't stay within 3 touchdowns of Clintwood. Saw them in the jamboree and it wasn't pretty.

Haha..OK..Appy could beat 5-6 of those teams if ya include the honorable mention teams. Good comedy ya got there tho...maybe you should try stand up. And for those of y'all that think Appy isn't very good, I've watched 'em play and they're not bad at all.
