Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
I dont see the big deal in it. Didnt Appy do this to Pound one yr.
Quote:
He can explain that three of the touchdowns came on returns. And that a blocked punt brought a fourth.
He can offer that his team threw just one pass in the second half. One that was played with backups and with a running clock throughout.
He can even reveal that his team lost to this very opponent just a year ago.
But in a high school landscape increasingly aware of sportsmanship issues - one where quick harsh judgments are made based solely on a score - Chaminade-Madonna football coach Tim Tyrrell knows he has a tough time explaining how his Hollywood, Fla., team rolled to victory over Pompano Beach last week.
83-0.
Chaminade Madonna ran the ball 24 times for 257 yards in the win.
"We did not go into the game looking to score that many points,'' he said, "and a lot of them came in bunches and off big plays.
"We only had one real drive; the rest came on short fields."
The Lions scored on a blocked punt, and two interceptions directly set up short touchdowns. Then to open the second half, senior Demitri Beal took the kickoff back 99 yards.
The defense also forced four more turnovers on the night.
The question then becomes when is enough enough? Chaminade-Madonna tied the Broward County record for margin of victory, a mark first established in 1951.
Gary Pigott, the senior director of athletics for the Florida High School Athletics Association, said there have been rules changes to help reduce the scoring opportunities - and thus avoid games such as these.
"About four years ago we switched from an optional running clock to a mandatory running clock for the mercy rule," Pigott said.
"It used to be optional, and the team who was behind had to request the clock. Some coaches thought that signified that they had given up on their team. We wanted to take that ethical problem away as best we could."
Pompano Beach coach Greg McGirt, reached by phone this week, did not want to discuss the game.
"I don't really want to talk about it,'' he said. "You might want to talk to my athletic director."
Athletic director Vince Stevenson didn't return phone calls.
A parent of a player, however, was more than willing to share his thoughts.
Ray Foster, whose son plays for Pompano Beach, said it was embarrassing to see his son's team beat by such a wide margin.
"I am sure we take it harder than they do," Foster said. "But it is humiliating to read the box score; it just doesn't seem right."
And that may be for parents on both sides. Foster said parents of the Chaminade-Madonna team - sitting close by at a field that had just one set of stands - did not applaud their team's final scores, the last of which came in the fourth quarter.
Pompano Beach did not flex much muscle in the contest.
"It was weird. We were all sitting on the same side of the field," Foster said. "Their fans were a little embarrassed by it, too. They stopped clapping by the fourth quarter."
Tyrrell, in his second year as coach at Chaminade-Madonna, said he has to do right by his team.
"I can not tell kids who do not get a chance to play to go in and not try,'' he said. "To not get better. To not work hard."
And Tyrell points out all his starters were out of the game at halftime, following a 42-point second quarter.
"If I pull my first team too early they will not be ready for the games that are coming up on our schedule,'' Tyrrell said. "It is my job to get this team ready."
That schedule includes perennial power Miami Monsignor Pace and 2008 Class 2A state runner-up Miami Gulliver Prep.
Last season Monsignor Pace bettered Chaminade-Madonna 41-0, and four other schools also broke the 40-point barrier against the Lions.
It was something Tyrrell said his team had to learn from.
"We had a lot of tough games, but we have to learn to win or lose with class," Tyrrell said.
"Whether we are up 60 or down 60 we have to work hard. We have to coach hard."
That may be easier said on the plus side of the 83-0 score.
And as Pigott points out, "What goes around comes around."
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
If the team came out passing and was intentionally scoring to embarrass them, then I can see a problem, but if they are letting teams return kicks for TDs, getting punts blocked, etc.. by backups, they have no reason to complain.
Its not the kids fault that their 3rd string was better than the other teams 1st string.

Ageed, doesn't seem like they did anything at all wrong.

This quote is pathetic. Mr. Vagdad needs to be humiliated by the effort his team put forth, that's what's not right.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
I swear I think appalachia beat pound one yr when chris clark played 80 something to 0. Also wasnt there a route in the last few yrs in the playoffs hear or in the finals one.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
Yeah, Appy has been on both sides of beatings like that, 72-0 one year, really bad another.
Its not the other teams fault if the 3rd string is better than the opposing teams' 1st string.

They beat them pretty bad. I think they had about 84, I don't remember if Pound had any points.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
"Chaminade Madonna ran the ball 24 times for 257 yards in the win" Good lord they gave up 10.7 yards a carry. I agree with yall. The dad in the quote should spend more time teaching his son to tackle or at least tripping better.

While I agree with that I have to say the blame must be dealt. And that would be to the losing team's head coach. If he had practiced his players better, prepared his assistant coaches to better train the players, then this would never have happened. Even if the talent he has isn't the greatest, he should be able to coach those players to be better. There has to techniques or something else that they could have used to have prevented this from being so bad. The head coach sucks. And that's why he wouldn't discuss it.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
Oh!!! I was disappointed.... I thought maybe this was a quote from Urban Meyer about how bad he was thinking of running up the score on the Vols tomorrow.....if it were to get that bad! :-(
I thought wow... thats a pretty low score compared to what I thought he would do. hahahaha

I looked through the LPD Report history and found that in 1991, Appalachia beat Pound 78-0 in the playoffs. I couldn't find any other scores that topped that, though. I think 78 points is the most Appalachia has ever scored in a football game, the second and third closest being 74-12 vs. Rye Cove (Playoffs, 1997) and 72-0 vs. Middlesex (State final, 1994).
Here is the website with all the scores up through 1998:
Appalachia Bulldog Football History
And then the scores from 2001 to present:
Home
The only years missing are '99 and '00, but I don't recall Appalachia having much during those two years so I seriously doubt they would have topped the 70+ mark in any of their games.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
I think that Middlesex score was 72-7 with middlesex scoring first, a lot of back story to that one.
I bet those early scores were supplied by Donny Jenkins.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
I think a recent playoff or title game was a lopsided event like that to. May not have been a LPD team but im pretty sure I read the paper and was like holy ****!
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
the Franklin/Burton game was bad a few years ago, so was th Gretna/GC game last year
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
Franklin/Burton was 44-0. That's the one where Babb sat the VHSL playoff rushing record for a game when he ran for like 8000 yards. William Campbell beat Appy 70-0 in the state title game a year or two earlier.

thats the game I couldnt remember, the WC game.
I was up there for the Burton game but didn't stay, that was in 05 right?
I was too ****ed after the PV game I couldn't stay and watch.
Babb is playing at Hampton, right?
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
Yep. He's a JR. Plays fb.
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
Whatever if anyone from any school in the LPD has something to say about this, itd be a crying shame. The LPD is infamous for running up the score
Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
In '03 GC beat Coeburn 73-0 , Lee 61-0, and Burton 63-18. Great team with starters seeing less than 2nd quarters in each of those wins.

I think that would have been 2004, Brad Robbins' senior year at Powell Valley when they lost by a touchdown or so to Manassas Park. Wish I could have heard more about how that game went, but I think we were doing something at the time so I couldn't even listen to it on the radio. That was the same series of title appearances when, as you guys were talking about earlier, Burton played Franklin and got blasted.

Yeah, 04, i knew that lol it was my senior year hehe.
I dont want to talk about the Manassas game please! LOL
PV lost, but they could have won. Maybe the most devistating loss ive seen in person.
The Man. QB was a beast tho, as was the big WR, but PV only lost by 6, in a game with their best defender didnt play the second half.
No excuses, Man. was the better team that day.
But if we played our 04 team against theirs ten times, I say we win 5.

Re: Fla Coach defends 83-0 rout
More of this "politically correct society we're living in...now it's going to be a social issue to score too many points on your opponent. If your team can't cut the mustard, don't expect the other team to lay down. Maybe it's time to examine your coaching staff if you're getting blown out...blaming the other team is only trying to shift the blame from your own team's shortcomings.
