What do y'all make of this one?..and what in the hell does it take to get Auburn ranked?
I dont know... I'll find out Saturday when I go watch them play down there. At least.. thats the plan anyway right now.
At the beginning of the year I thought this might be one of those games that we could win, maybe a 60/40 chance we could win. After watching the first few games I am more 40/60. Auburn hasn't been tested yet defensively either, neither Louisiana Tech/WVA/or Miss St have a very good defense, but, they have also not been held under 37 points either. So really who knows, guess we will find out Saturday
Both have good D's but I think Auburn's offense so far is much better. The loss of our MLB Reviez is gonna hurt big time. We just can't afford injuries and so far we have plenty of them, depth is a concern at just about every position other than RB and in the secondary.
I honestly thought we should be 3-1 entering this game and then this one would be a pivotal game that could jump start us on a brutal 4 game stretch. I said all along the UCLA and Auburn game were going to be the two games that either make us 8-4 / 7-5 vs 5-7 / 6-6. I hope we can pull this one out.
Honestly, I don't think UT's D is that good...besides Florida, they've faced the 115th, 108th, and 103rd ranked offenses..and that's out of 120 teams. Their Defensive numbers should look good. Auburn has played both the 31st and 35th ranked overall defenses already...so, IMO they've been tested more vs. good defenses that UT has been vs. a good offense. The only offense UT has faced this year is Florida's. You never know how a game's gonna go, but I think on paper this stacks up all in the favor of Auburn. IMO it's their game to lose.
With UTs injuries on D, I would give Auburn a slight edge right now. I think it should be a dandy game though. With UT being at home and Auburns first road game I believe, we could very easily see a 20-17 type game going either way.
So what your saying is, UT doesn't stand a chance and shouldn't show up Saturday.....
You could argue who people played and what they are ranked offensively and defensively all day long. You could say the reason WKU is ranked so low offensively is in part to UT shutting them down, that plays a role in their ranking. Same can be said for other teams.... You really can't use those rankings after the fact because UT played a part in them being ranked that low. There are many arguments for that back and forth.
You could argue that Auburn has let Louisiana Tech score 13, Miss St score 24, WVU scored 30 and BALL STATE scored 30 on em. Ball St only scored 10 on North Texas, 16 on New Hampshire, 17 on Army, and 30 on Auburn..... So what does that say about Auburn's D....
Either way we have had a tough run as of late beating Auburn...hopefully that changes Saturday
Many of the points scored on Auburn's D has been late against the reserves...go figure. Seriously tho, if you are up 35 in the 4th, why risk injury to your starters?
LOL, I gotcha..... we just hope we can hang with you guys maybe keep it within 20 or 30, just remember to take out your starters so Crompton can get a couple of TD passes this weekend. :D
I'm not sayin Auburn is gonna stomp UT's guts out..all I'm saying is that the match ups on both sides of the ball favor Auburn IMO.
I was joking about the first part but the 2nd part I wasn't...... Crompton needs a little confidence boost so take out your starters for a couple of drives and maybe he can get a couple in there, MAYBE.
Auburn looked the same way last year...Chris Todd has made some strides, tho..so I can't say he sucks anymore. I can still say I'm not very comfortable with him, Burns, or much less Caudle tho.
I know one thing, Eddie Gran was one heckuva coach. Of all the coaches that we got this offseason I love this guy. He is a great recruiter and an even better RB's coach. I can't wait to see what he does in the future with the stable of backs we have right now. Of course we need to get some offensive lineman in this recruiting class or we are gonna be very thin at that position.
The linemen are coming. Liefheit visited again for the Ohio game. I think Cullen is scheduled to be here Sat. But one thing I am not worried about is recruiting. This is the best staff in the country at recruiting. It is going to take a little time but we will be back sooner rather than later.
As far as Auburn, I think we have to really play well to win. You mentioned earlier about Reveiz being hurt. I really think he was a big leader of the defense and the team for that matter. It is going to hurt us. Hopefully Thompson gets back this week and we get Rogan back on the field. Because we didn't look like the same defense we had seen the first three games this past Saturday.
I think we are going to run the football. We have to slow Auburn down Offensively. I think Kiffin will have a good game plan. I do think Auburn will move the ball. Hopefully we can keep them out of the end zone and make them settle for field goals. I think the game is going to be a hard fought game if we keep it close going into the second half. We can't fall behind a lot early. We have to take care of the football and have to play better in the kicking game. No long returns. If we do all of that I like our chances. But that is a lot of if's.
We will see.
UT won't fall behind early, cuz Auburn hasn't started fast in 4 games. Actually, Auburn has been behind midway through the 2nd in 3 of the 4 games they've played. But, once the D starts to wear down Auburn has been blowing their doors off. Auburn has been winning their games in the late part of the 2nd and the entire 3rd quarters.
20-14 Auburn
How has Auburn been against the run? I know they will load the LOS up to stop us from running it. But I still think we will stick with the running game. I also think we will have some success running it. Brown and Hardesty are both avg. over 5 yards a carry and our OL has played well IMO. I think the key for us will be controlling the clock and keeping Auburn off the field.
What scares me the most is how the Auburn Defense has been scoring points. Mix that in with Crompton and it is a recipe for disaster. But to me. It all comes down to stopping the run. If UT can't run it. UT can't win. I think it is that simple.
They've been pretty good vs. the run outside of Noel Devine's night against em. Their D is extremely quick....and fast. (To me there's a difference)
Tennessee had 5 freshmen on the field at once on defense last Saturday. I think most are back this week, with the exception of Reveiz. I felt terrible for that kid.
Did you see his knee when he was going off the field Saturday night? Puke inducing.
Reveiz is a big loss. They moved Savon Frazier to the middle. They do get Thompson and Rogan back though. I think we will see a lot better effort than we seen against Ohio but I still think there will be a drop off without Reveiz.
Really Ohio's QB was pressured all night. He beat us scrambling and making plays. I don't think Todd has that ability. I also think this will be Auburns first test. They haven't faced a good defense yet. I think Monte will give them some things they haven't seen and hopefully we can create a few turnovers in the secondary. I don't think Auburn will have a lot of success running the ball. They will have to throw IMO. With a healthy secondary I like our chances. Todd has played decent. He had his best game against Ball St. I thought. But like Crompton. I think we can rattle him if you put him on his back a few times.
Malzhan will have a good plan. I just think you win being physical on offense. I don't like the finesse stuff. To cute for me. It looks good when it works but when it doesn't it looks awful. For some reason I have a good feeling about this game. I think Tennessee got a little humbled again from Ohio and freshmen are always up and down. But this is a game the coaching staff knew it needed to win when they took the job. I have to think they will have a good game plan and will make sure everyone is focused.
I think UT wins 24-16.
So, given that Mississippi State has played Auburn and LSU and still have the 31st ranked D overall....they're not a good Defense? And Auburn may be in a variation of the spread..but that's the most physical form of the spread I've ever seen. They run the ball and bust ya in the mouth....
So if you are gonna give credit to Miss St at the 31st rank D you gotta give UT some credit at the 8th rank D. Most of Miss St's success was against their weak opponents just like UT. If it wasn't for playing Jackson St and Vandy then their D wouldn't be ranked so well. They gave up close to 600 to Auburn. So I wouldn't say they have been stout.
You say the only team UT has played is Florida, which is ranked 3rd offensively in the nation and they held their own with them.
So you really can't say Miss St has a good D and then discredit UT's D.
But who knows, Auburn may throw up 500 yards on us then that would knock us down the list a few and I would agree with ya. I will agree with you that Auburn's version of the spread is a lot more hard nosed than most, shoot they ran for 400 on Miss St.... I sure to God hope you all don't have that kind of success on us... This weekend will be a good indicator as to how our season is gonna go and what type of team we have.
:D Spread anyway you like but UCLA is 3-0 so far this year so they aren't the worst team in the country. They have a solid D with a subpar offense, one that lost their QB for 4-6 weeks because of a broke jaw at Neyland.
Guess we will have to wait and see Saturday. I still think it is a toss up with you all having the edge but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time....:D
I may have said that wrong. I do respect what Auburn has done. They have played better than us up to this point. I don't think they are near as physical as UF. Which also runs the spread. But you can't say much when you look at their #'s. It is impressive. No matter the competition. I do like there RB's. I think they are a good tandem. I think Malzhan is a great Offensive coach. He is putting them in the best position to make plays.
And what I meant about being too cute... I think when Auburn gets into the meat of their schedule this no huddle stuff and the behind the back draws and that type stuff is really going to hurt them. I think when you play teams that are equal or better teams than you are. You compete by playing good solid football. That means running it, controlling the clock, stopping the run, playing well in the kicking game, not turning the ball over, and not having a lot of penalties. I don't think that Auburns offense is step up to do those things well. Of course that is just my opinion.
But again, I like our chances to slow down that running game. I think you will see berry in the box a lot against Auburn a lot like the UF game. The game plan will be to make Todd beat us. I think our secondary matches up well. It is the strength of our defense. We get Rogan back plus Jackson is really coming into his own. The key IMO is our LB play. We have to get solid play there or it could be a long night. We just moved Frazier to MLB so there could be some problems. But look for a lot of Nickel with Monte moving Berry around to try and put him in position to make plays.
I think Auburn is a lot better football team this year. They beat us last year down there. But I honestly feel like we are a better team. I know all about Crompton. But this team can run the football. I have no doubt about that. They play very physical up front and have two good running backs. From what I have seen Auburn front seven isn't as strong as in past years. I think we will control the clock and run the ball. I think if this game comes down to the fourth quarter we can wear that defense down.
But all bets are off if Crompton has a meltdown.... And lord knows there is a good chance of that. But I expect UT to play well. I think it will be a good game. But I see UT winning this one.
IMO, the only weakness Auburn has in their defensive front 7 is #17...and he's about as pitiful as UT's weak side LB (56 maybe?)...both of em get lost easily in the wash to say the least. The thing about Auburn's new O is that it's like a 2 minute drill the whole game...and teams that don't have a really deep bench full of DB's have a hard time keeping up and are sucking wind by the latter part of the 1st half..and into the second half as well. The OC is the same guy that introduced the Wildhog to Arkansas...and he's pretty creative. I think the game will be a test for Auburn, but I don't think it's one they can't pass. BTW, doesn't UT's O look alot like the Oakland Raiders O?...skill everywhere except QB...seems to follow Kiffin around these days..lol
#56 is Reveiz who was playing about as well as any LB in the conference. He is out for the year. He had monster games at UF and played as well as anyone against UCLA. He was undersized but play with a very high motor. For Auburn, I haven't been impressed at all with their LB's Stevens, Bynes, or Freeman. They just don't look like Auburn LB's.
Also Malzhan didn't come up with the Wildhog. Nutts brother who was on the staff came up with the wildhog. Malzhan was the high school coach in Springdale Ark. He had Mitch Mustain and Damien Williams on his team. Nutt gave him a job to get those kids. But he is a good coach. Malzhan wanted to throw the ball more at Arkansas. The problem was he had Mcfadden and Jones. Needless to say it didn't work out. He had some success in the SEC but against top teams stuggled. Malzhan went to Tulsa and Mustain and Williams went to USC. Malzhan had success at Tulsa. They led the nation in offense i believe. But again. I think in the SEC it is a different animal.
Also the problem with running the 2 minute drill the whole game is your defense is sucking wind as well. They are going to be on the feild alot more going up against some of the better SEC defense's. I don't think anyone expects to see Auburn put up 500 yards against the Bama's, LSU's, Ol'Miss's. Which is who Auburn needs to beat to win the west. Call me old fashioned but I don't like there style and I would be willing to beat they will strugle at times because of it against better teams and especially on the road.
Also I do think UT's O looks alot like Oaklands. But I would disagree about talent everywhere except QB. We need more talent at WR and TE plus need more depth on our OL. But the good part about it is there isn't any drafts. We can get whoever will come and there isn't a staff anywhere better at recruiting than the one in knoxville right now. It is only a matter of time.
I hadn't seen UT before the UF game, and that's the only time I watched them. During the entire game, me and the guys I was watching with watched 56 the entire game cuz I noticed he was indecisive in some of his decisions early on in the game. Needless to say, I didn't see him playing a "monster game"...I thought he looked mediocre at best. I didn't realize he was the LB that was out, but IMO, you haven't lost much...he didn't impress me anyways. And I never said GM came up with the wildhog, I said he introduced it into the Arkansas O...I know where it came from, but Nutt's brother wasn't the OC that installed and used it at Arkansas.
Wasn't Malzahn stripped of his play calling duties and basically was just a offensive coordinator about midway through his only year at Arkansas.
Here is a link to where the wildhog came from. It wasn't Malzhan. Again, He wanted to throw it 50 times a game with Mustain who he coached in High School. Nutt on the other hand understood what he had with Mcfadden and Jones. It is where the rift started between the two. So Malzhan didn't come up with and he didn't introduce it either. Houston Nutt introduced it and Danny Nutt came up with it.

Needless to say I disagree with you about Reveiz. I think he was playing as well as anyone. He was a captain and leader on the team. It is a huge loss.
Not to be picky, but there was NO SEC LB playing as good as Eric Norwood.
Norwood, right now, is on path to be SEC DPOY
EDIT--beast, replace the * with a K

try this?

It will not let it work. It says gogame****s. I guess it will not let that word on here. Ha!
I can't really blame it.
its not gonna work holmes, it bleeps out c-o-c--k
I am not saying Reveiz is near as talented as Norwood or Mclain or Spikes. I am just saying he was a big part of UT's defense and it is a huge loss for us.
oh yeah i noted that in the thread about CFB injuries, Reviez is a HUGE loss for the UT defense.
But Norwood has played better than any other SEC LB, including McClain and Spikes.
And I am not being bias, I'm an Alabama fan, but Norwood is just awesome.
If he keeps up this pace, he should be SEC DPOY
Norwood is a special athlete who should make some serious lute at the next level. Someone in the 3-4 will be very fortunate to get him.
