good game Cats. Vols had me a little worried.
Was a little closer than I expected. If we had someone who could sink a shot outside of a dunk then we could be pretty good.
Couple of things I have noticed while watching UK play a few times this year.
1. John Wall is a freak of nature
2. Eric Bledsoe would be the #1 option on just about any other team in the country.
3. Cousins needs to stay in school a couple more years and work on his attitude. I thought he was gonna cry after missing those free throws. He is way too emotional and needs to mature a great deal.
Now on the UT side of things.
1. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL JP PRINCE LEAVES THE UNIVERSITY OF TENN BASKETBALL PROGRAM.
Good game overall until the last 10 minutes.
NOPE, I don't like JP Prince and never have. I stand by that, I can't wait for him to leave
Prince gets a bad rap, i watched the game last night, and he played pretty well
he plays great D and has athleticism out the roof
His athleticism is out the roof, but he doesnt have a very high bball IQ. Hopson is a lot better player overall. Prince just does a lot of dumb stuff is his problem.
What did he have 3 charges called against him? 1 was questionable, but the last one I think, was ridiculous. You could see that coming from half court.
Hopson may only be a sophomore, but he hasn't shown that he's a better player than Prince. Hopson is either really good or really bad. No in-between.
I honestly think the program would be better if Pearl would recruit players similar to those he had at his previous coaching positions. His teams seem to be better when they have some scrappiness (see Bradshaw, Dane).
The McD AA's don't seem to have that spark.
To compete night in and night out against teams like Kentucky, Florida, Miss State, etc.. you have to have big time athletes.
Those guys like he had at Wisconsin Milwaukee(? was it UWM?) are great to beat one or two teams in the tourney, but to make a deep title run, you have to have big time players who can play.
I agree with Bob. He did better with those players at UT. When UF won back to back titles, they went 3-1 against UF and that one loss Lofton was hurt and didn't play. He also had his best record with a roster stocked with those kids. I don't know if it's a thing of bad judgment in talent or just lack of development but they're not turning into what they're expected to be. There was talk of Hopson being a 1 and done kid and he's nowhere close to being a 2, 3, or even 4 and done unless you just mean done for good. He's done better with players that nobody wanted like Ryan Childress, Lofton, CJ Watson, Jujuan Smith, Bradshaw, and even someone like Brian Williams than with Tyler Smith (who seemed to regress after leaving Iowa) and Hopson. Chism is about the only 4*+ type kid that he's brought in that I'd say has reached his potential and he's still kind of weak in the post game.
If Hopson leaves at the end of the year, he goes in the first round. Prince goes to Egypt or somewhere.
Like I said, its okay if the goal is to beat a good team once a year, or win a few big ballgames, but to win the whole shebang, which I would hope is Pearl's goal, you have to have big time players. I dont see how that is debatable.
UT has had a couple of big wins every year.
But here is there post-season results
2009-First round loss to Oklahoma State
2008-Sweet 16 loss to Louisville
2007-Sweet 16 loss to Ohio State
2006-Second round loss to Wichita State
In the last ten years, Alabama has made it further than UT has made it.
If UT is happy is winning one or two tourney games, I guess their roster is fine, but to make the next step, get to that next level, they have to recruit big time players, and get the big time players to play at UT. They have already started doing it, Tobias Harris and Jordan McCrae, and that is what they have to do to go to the next level, to be in contention to win a title.
The Vols lack quality shooters. Since J. Smith and C. Lofton left outside shooting has been horrible at best. IMO that was one of Pearl's better years. We need shooters and I am hoping the next couple of recruiting classes will take care of this issue.
He's made it just as far with "nobody's" than with the higher rated kids. In fact his best team was that 07 team that had no stars and should have made it to the Elite 8 if they could have held a 20+ point second half lead against OSU who played UF in the championship game. I'm not saying that they don't need good players like McCrae, Harris, Golden ect. I'm saying that either they're misevaluated or not developed right, while the kids like Lofton, Watson, Smith, ect. are turning out to be far better players. Lofton plays overseas but I think could make an NBA roster, Watson plays in the NBA, Smith was on San Antonio's d-league team and stars like Ramar Smith are involved in a murder investigation, Major Wingate did nothing but smoke weed, Phillip Jurick was a vag who transfered and will never be anything. I'm not saying talent doesn't help you win, I'm saying that he needs a mix of both and he needs to start landing on a lotter better success rate with the highly rated kids than he is.
I love Bruce Pearl, I think he is great for UT and for the UK/UT rivalry. UK is much of the same though, as good as they are they need a constant outside threat. Dodson I thought was gonna be that, he is streaky like the rest. But I guess with the size and speed UK has,
streaky is good enough. Oh, Im gonna try and post an interview Jay Bilas did about Coach Cal as well for all those who were involved in the "Coach Cal is Shady and the Devil, and caused the Hati Earthquake and supports consolidation in Wise Co and is the reason its snowing so much and the reason Vonn bruised her leg" conversation. Very interesting what Bilas has to say.
Im not disagreeing with the fact that a team needs role players, players who arent great athletes or all-stars but can come off the bench and contribute.
but to be a national title contender, they have to have some of those kids who will be NBA lottery picks, some of those one and done type players. its extremely hard now to win a title doing it the way teams did it 20 years ago, with one big time star and the rest role players, now you almost have to have 2-3 big time NBA-caliber kids to contend for the title.
but they cannot just not recruit big time kids because of past circumstances, you cant let a few bad apples scare you off NBA-caliber kids, because not all are gonna be busts.
they've had some bad luck with the highly rated recruits, but its just that, bad luck.
but that cannot stop them from trying to get big time athletes to come play at UT
Also did anyone see where Juan Dixon was banned from play in Europe for testing positive for steroids. NCAA may wanna go back and look at their NCAA championship and their staff, especially since Blake was also involved in a scandal back in Miami Fl when he was in HS.
They got a steal in Johnson. He may be the best player in college, just doesn't have a blow you away stat line.
I like Johnson a lot, but Rautins is the guy that makes them tick...if their young point guards can limit their turnovers they should be in the elite 8 no question, and possibly in the title game pending match-ups
They seemed destined to me to make it there. They would be a bad matchup for UK.
