Going to get interesting in light of the fact that one school board member stated he would never vote for consolidation no matter what the facts were.

One of the heartbreaking things is the low income school breakfasts that are going away. Some children don't get anything to eat other than at school. This is pitiful for them..
Really, common folks..especially the poor don't mean anything to politicians anymore... especially to the GOP. It's just spineless to throw the weakest (poor children) under the bus first. Here's the "jobs governor" (my a$$) eliminating more jobs in his first budget than he'll ever create while he's in office. Seems like folks would learn to not vote for someone whose party has traditionally hurt them, their families, and their area just because they are well adept at blowing hot air. But VA, and this area in particular did go for Dubya twice..go figure. Makes me question the brain power of the majority of folks around here. Sure he won't raise your income tax, he'll just raise taxes on every other necessity you need and strip away any help struggling families depend on.. And in most situations, it always seems like the children suffer first and most..and it's a **** shame.

If they really want to create jobs, why not rehire to get Vdot back to where it was, replace the computers in the dmv with real people again, and put a real person answering the phone when you call a state agency...not that automated BS. There are ways to fix things, but the deciding factor is going to have to shift from "what is the bottom line ?" to "what's in the best interest of the people ?". That's where this country and state has gone horribly wrong. They want to jump up and down and scream "capitalism", but what they don't realize is that pure capitalism died long ago...and it died for the same reasons communism died...too many corrupt hands in the cookie jar wouldn't let it work. But then again, capitalism in itself is driven by greed.
The VDOT situation is terrible, and I feel for those who work there now. 85% of things are farmed out to contractors for the lowest bid and shoddy work. VDOT guys then get the wrap for it, when the contractors do not have to listen to the local VDOTs recommendations.
I do not like the removal of free school breakfast for those in need. Many really shouldn't have the issue, but there are enough who do need it.
I see kids who need it on a daily basis..and it's sad if it goes..BUT we have to remember that the House of Delegates has to approve the budget (unless it's already been done). Instead of breaking ground on BS projects, our local delegates need to have their collective behinds in Richmond lobbying against approval of the governor's budget.Quote:

I can't open up a news site these days without seeing an article written about how kids on free/reduced lunches are going without food during these snow days because they rely on free breakfast/lunch program. (So let's just take away their breakfasts completely - that makes a lot of sense, right?)
The jobs governor is only worried about the jobs of the higher ups - which is where cuts should have started.
There's a significant amount of waste in the VA budget in many areas (from pork spending to medicaid abuse) - always has been. Guess it's easier to cut the neediest than to work on reducing all that waste.
Exactly...he wants to cater to his cronies. But the sad thing is, the people he cares about least are the same folks who put him in office. Statistics show that amongst whites the poorer a person is, the more likely they are to vote for the GOP. That party relies on those votes in National elections too. IMO, it's sad that folks can be so ignorant as to allow it to happen time after time after time. You would think that after Dubya folks would have wised up. But, for the time being, VA has a governor cut from the same mold. It's no wonder the GOP cuts funds for education every chance they get...the ignorant and the drop outs are their future votes.Quote:

I find it funny that last year when most conservatives tried to say Obama isn't doing anything he said he was going to do etc, etc, etc all the liberals jumped in and said he has only been in office for less than a year, you can't do anything in that amount of time, Bush screwed it all up, etc, etc etc. Now the liberals are saying the same thing about McDonnell and he has been in office for less than a month.
Politics is just a matter of which shoe fits on which day. Any side will do anything to make his or her side sound good. You can't blame any of this stuff on one person. Whether it be Bush, Obama, Kaine, McDonnell, Congress, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. I blame it on partisan politics and each side trying to do everything they can to further support their agendas. By doing this each side is only bringing the country down further, but it will never stop.
Probably one of the most intelligent posts I have read on here in a while. Granted, I do not agree with cutting some of those programs, especially the breakfast ones. Many parents are just to sorry to get up and get their kids off to school in the mornings and then there are other circumstances which prevent them from doing their parental duties. Could we do without it in the Public Schools. Maybe, but is is fair for some kids to be hungry until lunchtime? No, it is not. There is going to be numerous cuts and it will affect the local school divisions in a bad way. From buses to lunches. Could we look elsewhere for other places to cut first? I would think so. Now is the time to let the State Gov. know how you feel.
The point is the guy just got elected and his first budget takes direct aim at increasing the plight of the poor... some of y'all may be ok with that but I'm not.
The Senate version is a lot better, not perfect, but a lot better than old McDonnell's.
Nope Kaine wasn't great but the state isn't going to get better till they undo the Gilmore years. Problem is, Billy Bob appears to wanna do the best for the money, and some deans of education will always defend the grand old party, even if it hurts them.
Simple logic, economy is and has been in the crapper. Lets hurt the low end when the low end is already struggling.

Taking it's toll up at MECC, a lot of classes were cut out, so what classes there are have been filling up quick. Thanks bobby.
Out of curiosity, what classes were cut?
A religion class and history class that I was going to take personally are gone, sceince dept. took a big hit cutting down to about 1/2 class per section when there's 3/4 for each usually - which means half the kids won't be able to take it. Math seemed to stay the same, those are the areas I noticed because that's what I'm taking. All of my profs were complaining about it, english prof. said whole sections in some programs(nursing, mechanic etc) were gone this semester coming. Either your class is gone or your class is full and you may not be able to get in, 600+ million to education in VA under these budget cuts have taken their toll.
