SONIC RUIN - ISSUE 1

I'm making this post a little early due to my being anxious and wanting to let this out. It's also because numerous places ain't taking me serious on this thing. It's amazing how many "free ads" I've offered to labels, bands, magazines and nobody has taken me up on it or even responded to me.

Anyhow.

By the end of this month, beginning of September, I will be releasing issue one of my magazine/fanzine. The name, as you can see below, is "Sonic Ruin". As you can also see on the cover there are interviews with Buttz and Paul Blittz. Both of these interviews are older, but the Buttz one I kind of wanted to use to kick off the beginning of this whole project. The Blittz one is also a little out of date, but hopefully he will show up again for a "part 2" of the interview.

On Friday I hope to be posting the P.O. Box where you can send money off to for it if you have an interest in it. I will also answer any questions any of you have on it here in this thread.

I'm not leaving Glitz, I just plan to put most of my efforts into this thing. Glitz will be a part of the 'zine in that Glitz will be promoted heavily through out the thing. I won't even try to compete with Glitz for news, as any print 'zine that tries to go up against online sites is just wasting their time in those respects. The most "online" you will ever see Sonic go will be the page to order it from, or the My Space page.

That also beings me to the info about the My Space page. If you are currently one of my friends on My Space, you will notice on Friday that "Carl I." will no longer be the friend, but instead "Sonic Ruin" will be.

If you are in a band, or have a label and want to have your stuff reviewed, discussed, or be interviewed, drop me a line or wait until Friday and grab the P.O. Box number from the My Space page.

Thanks kids! Time to give credit where credit is due. Andy here saved the Buttz piece from extinction. If it wasn't for him asking to place it on his Multiply site last year, it would be gone forever, as it has somehow vanished from all of my computers! But thanks to Andy, it is in issue one. I don't think there should be a problem having multiple accounts if you use a different mail adress and bankaccount for signing up, but I have no clue really.... just guessing.

Kiko, part of the reason I am doing an actual print is because a few years ago when the idea first came to me, I asked around as to what people wanted, print or website. A surprising number of people said they missed the "fanzines". So, I decided to go with that. It was at a recent convention that I got to talking to Martin Arlt, the creator of Mad Scientist fanzine that I started thinking I could really do it. If you were to grab an issue of Mad Scienist you would see a few similarities.

D., I'm actually sooooo 1950 I think. But yeah, the print 'zine is a dying creature. But as soon as I switched that damn My Space page over, I started getting hit by other 'zines! I thought the format was dead, but nope, just even more underground, and more "hobby". But all of the publishers of the creatures seem to really be out to try and help each other, instead of destroying each other.

I will keep you and your company in the front of my mind! You will probably get my first call. Heck...I could already use help. But I want to get the first issue out as is, and then take feedback from people as to what sucks and what works.

Why not save some pennies, Carl, and produce your
fanzine in downloadable PDF format? That way people
can choose whether they want it on paper or not,
and you avoid being branded a 'tree-hater'.

Well...ummm...for all of my computer knowledge...adobe and .pdf's still confuse me and I have no idea what to do with them or how to create them. Ha. Yeah...it's a tough thing to admit.

So go and learn how to do it, you... tree-hater.

Seriously, between the forums and the freebies,
there's enough at www.adobe.com to get you
started. And remember: when you do start creating
PDFs, they can be multipage as opposed to, say,
one big scroll down the screen. Also, you can
now embed videos into them, links to Skype,
include submenus and all kinds of loveliness.
I'd teach you how to do it, but I'm too lazy to learn

Thanks, I'll look into it for sure on issue 2. I know most every printer charges a decent amount for .pdf files, and they charge an arm and a leg for any other file.

But, I really do hate trees.

People can print the PDF version on their own

Second, I have started also converting all of the pages into a .pdf format. So when all is said and done, thanks to D's advice, the 'zine will probably be available in a print form for those that will want the 'zine already printed out for them (and for the goodies that will come in the mail). But then I will probably in the future be offering the 'zine in a downloadable .pdf format. I think I might stagger it. Issue 1 in .pdf will be released when issue 2 print is done. I will continue this until the cost of the actual print kills me. At that point it might turn into a .pdf format only. But hopefully I will be "successful" enough to keep the print going, as that is what I really want to do with this thing.

Nah. I offered up free ad space to a label. The guy told me do whatever I wanted, but nobody buys print anymore so I am just wasting my time. Pissed me off, to say the least. Free space and he didn't care. Eh, what can ya do. Even if it reaches 3 people, free space is free space, right?

I think you can keep a low budget publication
ticking over, but it requires a lot of effort,
and a half decent design too. No offence meant,
but I don't think anybody takes shoddy fanzines
seriously anymore - and you know this, of course,
being a comic guy used to pro layouts, compositing,
etc.

Nah, I know. I'm trying real hard to make the first issue look good. The cover has changed since that one up there. It looks a better now, not so "shoddy". Though I don't know, I have seen numerous fanzines recently that look quite crap. But that is why I have kind of based mine on one that I like. It was pleasing to my eyes, so I ran with it to a degree.

Price will be $3.00 to start with. Outside of the US I don't think will cost all that much more for shipping, but I will be finding out soon enough I expect. But I am pretty sure I will stick with the $3 for the first issue for everybody.

If anybody wants to order, go for it and I will send out as soon as we have these ready to go, which I expect to be in a few weeks. I'm going to check all my options for printing this week.

as before. Maybe it could do with a strong 'SR'

Eh, I'm not in love with the logo, but I am also not a graphic designer at all and what little I have done usually looks like a retarded 3 year old on crack did it. So, I'm happy with it. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
