We Are All Football-Starved
Let's get some debate, thoughts, opinions going on this upcoming HS football season. I know I'm not the only one on here chomping at the bit for kickoff. In the LPD,Clintwood should be the clear favorite with teams like PV,JIB,and JJK all pretty much in the same mix. On the Reservation,B.I. has some key folks to replace, but he's got a solid group of kids ready to step in and contribute. What are you guys (and gals) on here looking for from your team this season?

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
I look for the Raiders to go 4-6 and have a lot of payback handed to them this season. will not be pretty in Norton under the Friday Night Lights. Just wonder how many true fans will still be sitting with me. bad thing is that it will be skewed because of finacial situations will have even some of the die hard fans sitting home. Just for me and mine to go it is at the very least $20 and I can only imagine with a family of 4 or 5.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Clintwood will beat everyone in the LPD by three touchdowns. It will be the worst season of LPD football ever. I just hope CW doesn't get hurt by lack of competition and can make a run to the state title.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Does it really matter? Clintwood may win everything in the LPD but Lebanon or Gate City will win the region an even if for some reason Clintwood gets by one of those two, they will lose the state final. Same ol Same ol! Football is horrible now because its the computer age. Nobody wants to work and get bigger or better. The kids are too small. Nothing like it was in the 80's and mid 90's. The worst in the LPD then could beat the LPD's best now.. Its horrible!

Clintwood=Division I
Lebanon = Division II
Gate City= Division II

Well we know Clintwood won't beat Gate City and Lebanon in the D2 Region D finals because Clintwood is in Division I.
I don't have confidence that PV will have a much better season than the past few season.
All the state championship teams from PV, Appalachia (even the 5 loss 89 D1 state champ Appy), Gate City, Burton, and Clintwood would beat the current best teams in the area. The 2002 and 2003 Gate City teams would whomp the ones from the past few seasons. The infamous 2001 Pound team which went 0-10 would give the current Pound team a run for their money.
Where are the old players from SWVA like Thomas Jones, Julius Jones, Shane Tucker, Robbie Duncan, Matt Stidham, Matt Osbourne, Jake Houseright, Travis Turner, Travis Clark, Justin Hamilton, Josh Mabe, Ricky Webb, the Sensabaugh brothers?
I'm not putting down the talent of the current guys we have but during the very few SWVA games I've watched in football the past few years, the enthusiasm is no longer there.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Way too early predictions.
1. Clintwood: They were pretty young last year and still managed a co-district championship. The back-to-back district champion wave will continue to roll to a 3rd straight in 2010.
2. JJ Kelly: No team has made as much improvement over the last 5 years as the tribe. BI has turned the ship around and will continue to make progress. Key losses on the OL will be tough to replace.
3, Powell Valley: Even with a 2009 co-district championship the last two years have been rough for the vikes. I believe they will end the 2 year streak of 5-6 finishes but will not be in contention for a repeat district championship.
4. Burton: The Raiders have been on the slow decline since 2007 and this year will be the biggest drop. No one will be able to replace what Miles did for this team. As someone said in this thread, Burton will get paid back a lot this year for the countless whippings they put on other teams.
5. Appalachia: The dawgs have also hit a rough 2 year stretch going 1-9 and 5-5. This year will not see improvement as a lot of dawgs graduate.
6. Pound: Will be lucky to field a team this year. If the Cats have even 20 players on the roster I'll be surprised. Its looking like a 0-10 or 1-9 season for first year coach jason hicks.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
gate city is the clear clear fav in case you didn't know. im not being a ***** gc fan im being honest. leb lost alot. no one else from the cmd but va high is threatening. gate city returns every skill player and loses two linemen on each side of the ball. they replace the o line spots with a half time starter last year very strong, 1000lb club, and a freshman coach reeds son; who is expected to do great. return 3 all state players both the clarks that go both sides of the ball. and jo vo the running back or full back this year since dusty clark is rumored to be moving to rb and let someone throw the ball around to the much improved WR's. defense will be great as allways. return 18 of 21 starters.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
i agree noone will be able to replace miles, but a slow decline since 2007 in that span lets see 2 region d finals and 1 state game appearance! that is a slow decline?
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
I didnt say burton didnt accomplish less but what i meant by that is from 2004-2006 the Raiders played for the state title 3 times. In those years plus 2007 before the injury bug bit them, JIB was untouchable. In 07 and 08 they came short in the Region D title game. In 09 they made it to state but lost games to Kelly and PV for the first time since 2002 and 2004. They won games in 2009, but many were not the blowouts that JIB usually gave out.
From 2005-2007 JIB was 35-5. In comparison from 2008-2009 JIB was 24-5. Although it may be a slight decline record wise, the talent has declined as well.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
I thought malik miles was a little hope just in himself for burton no?
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
You guys are right. I dont know what i was thinking. Anyway, my point is the same for Division 1 and 2. No team in Div 2 will win region from the LPD and no team in Div 1 will win the state from the LPD. You guys are dreaming if you think otherwise. And no, we are not all starving to watch the crappy LPD play anything anymore. LPD is nothing now with the Clinch Mountain District in the region. Wake up people.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
No region D champs anymore, right?

We are actually. Because we are LPD fans and this is the LPD board ya know. And I think it's safe to say we'll watch our programs whether they are crappy or not. Except for maybe Pound :) just kidding.
But anyway. I'd like to take another trip to state to see Clintwood there. By the looks of things expectations are pretty high for them. I think they can be ok. Make another run to the playoffs. Wise could do pretty well. They surprised me last year. And yes Norton does need a little payback :D And I just don't know about Powell Valley lol all in all I think it'll be a good year.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
This coming up year will be the last year for Region D champs in football. The new Single A format for football will start in the 2011-2012 year.
-
Me personally, now this is just me. I would rather take a trip to state and lose than not making it there at all. Seems like a couple of people think that it is bad to make it there and lose. I never heard anyone say Clintwood will make it to state or win state.
I do agree that the top two teams will be Gate City and Clintwood, but you cannot count out Va. High and Wise. Those coaches will have those teams ready to play anyone!

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Burton lost Miles but IMO they won't finish 3-7, 4-6, or even 5-5 for that matter. Malik Miles is gonna be a stud on both sides of the ball for a few years to come. It won't be one of those 10-0 seasons but it won't be .500 or below either. I could see it coming somewhere in between, say 8-2 or 7-3 for good measure. It is WAY to early to even be making predictions but we should be fine. We got an experienced line, good young QB, and Malik Miles. So I wouldn't put us at the bottom of the district or anything.
I remember a few years ago after the Shelby Valley scrimmage people on here were saying we would be lucky to go 3-7 and we actually went 9-1, can't remember if that was when Stewart left or not can't remember to much from that far back, ha ha. So I wouldn't go jumping off High Knob just yet Burton fans.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
dont plan on my son will be a sophomore so will never jump off i was making a point that i agree it wont be a 9-1 10-0 year defense will have to step up this year i think it will be closer then most ppl think in the district sort of like last year with 3-4 teams all right there

Wasn't singleing you out shwalker32 just most JIB fans in general that I have spoke to have said this. Not just on the board. Matter of fact they have been saying it just about every year. Said it when David Stacy left, said it when Ethan Stewart left, said it when Jaycob Coleman left, and now after losing someone as talented as Miles they will be saying it again. We won't be able to fully replace Tinez but with a team effort and a few other positions maturing somewhat we should be okay. Sorry didn't mean to make it look like I was calling you out there, as a matter of fact, I didn't even see your post.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
BTW, I hate LPD Football now. It's the only sport where we just don't kick everyone elses teeth in. I'm glad it's that way though, I can take mediocre football with championships in pratically every other sport. This may be the worst PV team I've ever seen unless they have something I don't know about. Have schedules been posted yet?
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
The schedules are the same as last years but at opposite venues.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Yea I know, I was just hoping the VHSL had them up with dates and what not so I could find everybody's on one site. I'm not in the mood to hunt down schedules team by team.

What sports are we doing that in?
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
I think "we" is PV.
Also, the 2010 schedules are not up yet on the VHSL website.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
I was referencing PV, and it's just in the LPD. We don't do much out of the LPD. I wish we'd leave the district and join the CMD, I think the lack of competition kills us in the playoffs in every sport. Most notably in basketball. We only played 7 losable games in the entire regular season, the two Appy games, the two Gate City games, and one at JJK, one against Wolfe County (which I still contend we would've won by 20 points if Garrison didn't pick up his fourth foul in the 3rd quarter), and one at Lee. Three of those games are CMD schools we need to go over there and play so we can get used to competition. Baseball is the same thing, we've played two close baseball games in the LPD, softball has been a joke, and we can win track titles on 2-3 events alone.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Gotcha. It's easy to understand after a re-read. I thought you were saying as a district. Even with what you meant though, what do the "championships" that they're winning matter if they're not the big one? Especially since they're winning those by beating ****-poor joke competition. RD sports around here are just pretty sad as a whole. Nobody's scaring anyone when it comes time to play for a championship that matters. I'm glad at least that at the 2 state games that Clintwood made it to they played hard and lost by a td in each game. Our kids (imo) need to show more dedication. Until then, RD is an afterthought.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Since we are talking about football:
The State Clinic will be at Lebanon High School at 7:00 PM on Monday July 26. The AOA local meeting will be Tuesday July 27 at Lebanon High School at 7:00 PM. Fees for this year will be $76.50.
Would like to see some more new blood come out and join up. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
One more thing, I don't really see what your example of PV joining the CMD would help either. What are they winning? It's region wide, not one district.

At least in the CMD we could play some better competition. GC has been to state in baseball, Virginia High has a strong softball tradition over the last ten years, GC volleyball is very good (have won state titles), the basketball is light years ahead of what we have in the LPD, the football is light years ahead of what we have in the LPD (to the point everybody but Appalachia and PV are scared to play them). It's just an overall better district.
FWIW, I've not give up on us winning a state championship in softball this year. With two horses in the circle were going to be a tough out.
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
15 state titles since 2000 says how far we have came the last ten years has been good to gc. anyone else had a better run off the top of your head?
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Only one State title this year for the CMD, Gate City volleyball. Of course, still got track, baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis left, and a pretty decent shot in those (with the exception of probably soccer). Believe there were two last year with a few runner-ups and maybe 3 or so the year before with a few runner-ups.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Lee High and Appalachia had better beat us this year. It may be their last shot with the school situation.

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Here is my EARLY thoughts on next season
LPD
1) Clintwood - As much as I hate to put a target on there back They return almost ALL there skill positions and most of there Line (Including 2 4 year starters) with the biggist losses being TE on offence and DL on defence (Both positions will be TOUGH to fill) Dottson looked like a stud last season as a 10th grader I am really looking foward to seeing what he can do this season....From what I am hearing from offseason workouts this MAY be the physicly strongest team that Clintwood has put on the field since the Honaker twins played
2) Burton - Miles IS not going to be replaced he was DOMANATE the the regional Championship game last season he was responsable for all but 14 yards of Burtons Offence ve Clinwood and it was NOT becouse Clintwood was not focesing on stoping him......The Younger Miles MAY be able to become that guy BUT at this point he does not scare me like Martinaz did
3) Kelly - They have some holes to fill but BI has build a program and even the years that thy may not be the clear Fav they and no longer anyone homecomming game.
4) PV - I can't pick them lower becouse there tradition is to strong and Phil (love him or hate him) is a good coach but I can't pick then any higher becouse IMHO over the last several years they have finished well below the talent level that was on that team and this season I am not seeing a game changeing stud player that MAY work out better for PV but I just do not see it yet
5) Appy - Could finish MUCH higher and IMHO is one a team that will be better than last season BUT thy are starting to be thought more and more of as a basketball school
6) Pound - Pound is Pound and while I really like there new coach I think that the damage that has been done to that team over the last 8 to 10 years is just WAY to much to overcome in the shortrun
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CMD
1) GC - Easy pick this is a team that did MUCH better than most outside GC thought they would do (Next step is to focus more on the team that they play in the regional Championship than the location of the game)
2) VHS - In year 2 I think VHS finishs a strong 2nd in the CMD and playes in the Regional game with GC
3) Lebanin - Loseing alot of talent off last seasons team but Much stronger than Battle and Lee
4) Lee - New coach same story
5) Battle - remembering the good old days in the Hogo
-
Re: We Are All Football-Starved
Other than 98, there really weren't many good old days for Battle in the Hogo even.
-

Re: We Are All Football-Starved
All I know is the only HS sport I pay money to watch is Football. And every week I'll be pullin' for the Vikes and Dawgs to win their games in hopes that PV can kick their teeth in in the final regular season game. It may seem strange for someone to pull for an archrival to win (and regardless of the records, that is PV's top rival..and to all y'all Vike fans that don't believe that to be so, lose to 'em one year..it makes losing to anyone else seem like a win in comparison) but the hard earned RESPECT due to the intensity of past games between the two is just one of the things that makes that game special. Then I pull for each of em to win some more. It hasn't happened like that in a while, but ya can't blame a man for wishin'. And as far as ANY team leaving the LPD, I hate to see any of em leave..and that included when Coeburn left...and Coeburn was the only LPD team to never appear in a Championship Final. The Coeburn teams of 89-92 would wipe the floor with the best SWVA teams now days tho..they were pretty darn good.

Explain to me the benefits of us staying in the LPD? District championships do not get you into the playoffs after this year.

As far as football goes I am not sure playing in the CMD will be any better for them I can see the argument for Basketball, Softball and Baseball
