Aquired at an auction....Need help unloading

I recently aquired some vintage altec equiptment at an auction. I'm looking for some expert advice on pricing and where to unload these beasts. I have (2) Model N1209 8A Professional Sound Reinforcement Dividing Networks both in cabinets. Speakers inside are 421-8LF bass musical speakers. (2) 421-8H Bass musical Instrument speakers also in cabinets. I don't know if they work. Hoping to find somebody who will enjoy these. Pictures are on craigslist. I had a few emails, but not sure what's a good price.

Vintage Altec speakers PRO

You've got some old musical instrument stuff from about 30 years ago, the less desirable stuff is musical...Pro or better Hi-fi gear is the good stuff. You don't have either.

Some weeks it's a struggle to get a hundred each for tested guaranteed 421's. So unknown obviously way less.

The boxes are worth something, but shipping is killer.

Honestly? From what you described, tested and working I would be ecstatic to get 500-600. Unknown it's a crap shoot.

N1209-8a crossovers that I can see? you don't mention any horns?

Thanks for the quick reply. There are no horns. My biggest issue is the cost to check thme out and make sure they work. I do a lot of auctions so the quicker I move the stuff the better. I was thinking about ebay as two seperate auctions. May start one this weekend. Would it be better to keep the stuff all together or pull the speakers out?

It's a judgement call.

Me personally would sell the boxes in pairs, the 421's in singles, and the crossovers as a pair.
I would offer the boxes local pickup- if somebody wants to arrange shipment you can drop at a freight terminal.

This REALLY isn't what we are here for BTW. We are all volunteers so we are here to share info and support rather than help people make money. Please consider making a donation to the board...link at top. Todd does a lot of work to keep this place up, and a few bucks for expenses always helps.

And at the very least you should offer it up here first.How many times is it that people come here looking to find out what there stuff is worth and then they run to eBay and add a few hundred to the price of what someone here tells them.

There's a simple search at eBay it is called (Completed Auctions) if you do a search say of the last 6 months that should be a start. Regards !!

Since you know next to nothing about them and chose to buy them at an auction, that was probably a "good" price. It was at the very least the current market value when and where you bought them.

The largest value w/fastest turnover is definitely in the crossover pair which you can expect an ebay price of 125 - 150 this time of year.

421's are a "dime a dozen" and of little interest to the hifi enthusiasts that frequent this site. Last pair i sold were 421-8LF's in excellent cosmetic and working condition for 100 bucks. I usually don't bother with 421's unless they're essentially free. I agree with OG about selling 421's singly as the educated market for them are usually looking to use them in instrument amps/cabs(guitar, bass, keys). Most other Altec products get better prices as pairs.

Too bad the 1225 horn cabinets weren't included with the 1215's, those would have been worth several hundred.

The 1215 cabinets might generate slight interest, but shipping will be cost prohibitive so you're limited to a fairly local market. For those with the abilities and facilities, most Altec cabinets can be built new for the cost of shipping or less.

The 816's might get a bit more interest as they're somewhat more easily handled and they have the classic Altec horn flares that many will recognize.

It's been my experience that i enjoy much happier endings when i do my research before i buy, rather than the other way around.

I came to this site after a week of looking at other sites, realizing this was the best one on altec stuff. That's why the internet is so valuable. I just want to know what I have before giving it away. I did the completed search on ebay and found nothing similar to my stuff. Doing auctions is always a chance, sometimes you win sometimes you don't. This altec stuff was buried behind some furniture, so I had no idea it was there.
I really appreciated Old guy's info and even donated $5.00 per his request. I don't want you to bail me out, I just want an honest opinion. If anyone wants my stuff please let me know. I enjoy beer, and belong to an enthusiast board, similar to this one. If you came over and asked me about a rare bottle of Stout your friend gave you and wanted to know the best way to persevere it I would inform you. That's my job as an enthusiast to inform people about stuff they don't know about. Thanks for the information again.

You have to realize that so many folks pop in here just to ask a price, then disappear. And as was noted above, go on to offer the stuff up for much higher than it's really worth. So you can understand why this kind of question can get a rough answer.

The guys here are really good hearted and love the Altec stuff. They can just be a bit grumpy at times. ;)

Best of luck on your auction. What you have learned is that gear you bought is not the most collectible, but someone might want it. If you find a high bidder, more power to you! But just don't expect much.

Great post Pano, i agree wholeheartedly.

I think at least a few of us would love to "play with" some 1215 cabinets, but unfortunately, the logistics of moving them any significant distance quickly becomes cost prohibitive.

Do you buy storage units? I've often though it would be fun to do that and then have a big garage sale, where everything is either sold, given to the Salvation Army, or tossed.

Wouldn't you just drink it......... how long can it be stored for? I would imagine cold and in the dark..... am I on the right track?

Yes, they are storage units. It's a lot of fun. You never know what you will get. This one for instance had a bunch of furniture pilled up in front and when I finally got to the back I found the Altec stuff stakced neatly. There was some other speakers, a korg A3, a couple of surgeX surge protectors , a roland e660 and a medsua whirlwind hookup for all the speakers. You do get a lot of junk but most times you can sell the big stuff , recoup your money and donate the junk.

On the beer, It all depends on how complusvie you are. I will usually store stuff for a few months before it calls my name. You can properly store stouts for years in a controlled space or a dark cool basement. If done right the taste gets better with age. It's kind of like wine, but I prefer beer.

I thought beer only went downhill with age. Maybe that's just the way it's commercially stored and moved around, Though.

I'd be interested in the cabinets, as I'm close enough to you..... about 2 hours away. However, I can't offer much on something that would essentially be a toy, for me. If it gets to the point where you need the cabinets to be gone, let me know.

Quite true about modern beer, But old people can remember a time when bread had color and spoiled in a few days.

Heavier beers were generally brewed to store longer. Stronger yeasts convert more carbs to alcohol, and alcohol doesn't spoil.

American beer is generally a few percent alcohol- maybe 3-4. Some stuff is up a lot higher.

Legend has it back in my college days after a dozen Carlsbergs one New Year's...

Abused beer. To get the alcohol that high it is frozen and chunks of ice pulled out. This concentrates the alcohol and the bad flavor.

Quality beers are often an acquired taste.

People with strong personalities are often offensive at first meeting. Not that they mean to be...

A beer that is different is gonna taste different. It may not mean to offend either.

Even in other new things, not just beer, things I didn't like at first turned out great. I think it's just humans are wired for stability instead of change.:coffeedrinker:

I've brewed beer up to about 9% at home using nothing more than a large quantity of malted barley, resulting in a high starting specific gravity. The ABV or alcohol by volume is determined by measuring the starting SG, subtracting the finishing SG, and calculating your alcohol percentage.

Traditional yeasts will have a ceiling as the alcohol, which is a yeast waste product, causes the yeast to go dormant. However, there are other types of yeast available which allow fermentation to somewhere in the 12-14% range, just like wine. Many fine barley wines are commercially available, and can be dynamite in the bottle.

In general the darker the color and the thicker and chewier the beer, the longer it can be aged. I just had a Carolina Brewing Winter Porter, bottled in 2003 a few weeks ago, and it was excellent. The characteristically sweet porter had become a bit drier with the flavors becoming a bit more refined in the aging period. You don't always get so lucky aging a beer, but in many cases these thick rich beers get better with some age....:2thumbsup:

Got caught posting Altec/Tapco mixers were made by another company for instance. Turns out only one model Altec was.

FWIW, one of the cheapest routes to high alcohol beer is to toss in champagne yeast at the end...it can survive past the content that kills the regular stuff.

Note the 10.2 percent beer I posted a link to qualifies as a barleywine...or at least the maker says so...

"A barley wine with deep amber color. The brandy of ales, this beer has vintage character and will mature in the bottle at cellar temperature for years."

The home brew I mentioned used a yeast called "Brewers Secret" which I found out after my Imperial stouts started exploding had an extra enzyme included that could also eat the supposed non-digestibles from some of the more complex malts...

Needless to say my wife, who was home at the time wasn't very happy.....:doh:

Same in most industries though. Lots of what used to be esoteric products have become commoditized. Like speakers.:D

No biggie just wanted it understood I was only talking about cheap stuff, although there are a couple decent beers made that way.

Bells is one of my favorite breweries. They have a few that hover around the 10% range. One my favs @10% is Hopslam. It a double IPA with some hints of grapefruit, and a strong hop flavor. A couple of those and your well on your way. Great off topic of beer in an Altec speaker forum, who would have thunk. But I guess beer never gets old..

As a home brewer who turned pro I know having extra beer around causes party's to happen.:D

Having some Altec speakers can make for a rockin party!!!!

So....Beer + altec =Good party You never know who will show up.

I've been looking for a pair of 816's for awhile now,they always show up to far away or for silly prices.

Actually IIRC, it's an enzyme specifically included to break down the non-digestables into simpler carbs that the yeast can then eat.

Yogurt uses a bacteria, which is IIRC the same family of bacteria used to make Lambic styles of beer, popular in Belgium.

My buddy Bakes made a batch of lambic in his homebrew set up one time, and regretted it for quite awhile. Not only did the end result taste similar to sour milk, but he managed to contaminate his set up, ensuring that several successive follow up batches also tasted like A$$.....:mooning:

Please enlighten me on what you're up to there...a secondary fermentation in your keg? Cold filtering?

If I had kept up the home brewing, I would have loved a cold filtering set up. I'm not a big fan of schmeg in my beer. Yeah they say it's healthy and good for you, but I can't stand the taste....:p

I got out of home brewing when I started to have more $$$ then time. You never know, that can always change.....

"active" yogurts advertise only they have a certain thing. They can do this legally because it is a trademark.

Curious who makes Brewer's Secret? Can't find any web page. Is it a local trademark? Was just interested in seeing exactly what it was. No biggie, just something to waste time on. At my age you need such things.


Just me being an engineer type, my first question is what is it and how does it work.
