Pic of new Stonehege V's with GPA's 604s

Took advice from Todd and built the massive version 5 Stonehenge's for the GPA 604-III drivers....

Finish is a very expensive Santos Palesander over 19mm ply...plus a second internal layer of 19mm ply....38mm in total.

Cabs will be finished in Bees Wax polish.

Some internal bracing to secure the middle of the removable back panel, plus minimal sound deadening to be added. Solid billet terminals will be used.

A rewarding and fun project....

Looking forward to getting the drivers in this weekend for testing.....

Amp will be 300B SET....

How many cubic feet is that enclosure?

Nat....No,I idn't build them. I've built many horns before...but for his one, Iused a local wood guy to help, as I wanted to have nice mitred corners all around. That's a tricky job to get perfect.

Outside measurements are 47.75 inches tall x 18 deep x 22 wide...

Beautiful work...they'll be stunning when you apply the final finish.

These are my first Altec's.

Over the last few years, I've developed a small custom building horn speaker business...Creation Audio...so I've tended to stay with Lowther, Tannoy, Fostex, etc.

I've started talking to GPA to see if I can promote their gear 'down under.'

The 604's are the first project....and I went for the biggest cabinet advised. (I just love building big things...!)

I'm also talking with Bill from Martinelli Horns to use his wooden 400Hz Trachorn paired with the GPA 902 comp driver, plus a 416 bass...in a new/old Model 19 config. That will be fun.

Oh, meant to ask.

The gent I'm building these for has asked that the drivers be mounted from inside the front baffle...hence the removable back panel. (Similar to the Hiraga cabinets.)

Todd mentioned he wouldn't necessarily do this.

Any thoughts on possible sonic losses this way? (My cabs don't have the flared cut-out like the Hiraga though....)

Any thoughts on mounting techniques (of the drivers, that is!)?

Internal volume is 246 liter (15,020 cubic inches, 8.7 cubic foot).

Is that big enough for bass....!?!

What's the cubic foot of the bass ca of the Model 19, for example?

That volume is about that of the ALtec 620/620A cab, which was the largest and imho best sounding cab for the 604s.

The Stonehenge V was designed to have around that same volume, just with a smaller footprint.

Hmmm....good question. Here's the spec page, and here are some cabinet plans.........

The grills add about 2" to the depth, and the cabinet necks down slightly between the horn and woofer enclosures, but it is continous internally. One of the real experts will undoubtedly have that number.

I've also been told that if you have the room for a 18-20 cu ft cabinet, you can push 604's down to close to 20 Hz....:eek:

Yes, I've done it. You end up with what is called an "Extended Bass Shelf" alignment.

No the 620 cabinet is around 9 cu.ft. which would be slightly larger if Magnarc's dims. are correct.GM said to me awhile back that any Full Range cutout ie; 604 in a cabinet should have the cutout flared.

Altec front mounted most cabinets.With their 16" frames anyway here's a picture of the flare on my 612C cabinets.When these cabinets were purchased new from the factory they came with 604-8G drivers & crossovers. Good Luck w/project. :)

I think bringing some Altec choices to your site will be a nice addition

I heard 620 and model 19 side by side . The difference is "palpable" but my preference is the Altec A-5. All 3 models with Mac Amps.

Latest pics attached....lovely...spent hours rubbing in heavy wax polish.

The pics don't do it justice...but reminds me of this from Shindo.

Had a pleasent evening comparing Unison KT88 SET amp (12-watt) vs Unison Push-Pull EL34 (40 watt). The SET was the winner by far.....PP too much (even) given my quite large room.

But, what a BIG sound overall....quite stunning...with great warm bass to 34Hz...then rolling off to 28-30Hz.

The 19 has a fuller enveloping sound . That was my first impression.

Enjoying the speakers now with a Unison SET amp (KT88)...14 watt/side. BIG sound...just lovely. tried Unison PP (EL34)....40 watt/side....not needed at all.
