Yet one of the most popular sports in the enitre world.
and N'SYNC was the most popouar band in the world at one time. still dosen't make them good
Terrible comparison, soccer isn't a fad, it's always been incredibly huge worldwide and will always be. Just because it's not big in America, doesn't mean it isn't a good sport, our most popular sport is wimp version of rugby and the our pastime is a game a longer, more boring game with 1/10 of the athletes as a game like soccer.

Conditioning is part of being a true athlete, a huge part. The fact still remains no matter what the reason is, whether the sport doesn't call for it, that they chose the other sport etc...doesn't matter to me. It comes down to us being lazy, look what happened to us in the WBC, the Olympics when we took the bronze home a few years ago...that should never, ever happen. We have more talent, that's a given, yet we get our asses handed to us in the WBC and a few years ago in basketball. Why? Because we have spoiled athletes, that show lesser pride, lesser discipline etc. Soccer is just too simple for it to catch on here in America, we make ours as complex as possible for some reason, if it doesn't have a thousand different penalties...it's a sissy sport according to us.
Yea of little baseball knowledge. Who says we have the most baseball talent? Your crazy if you think that is the case. Go into the Latin world and see what you will find. Asian countries generally focus on baseball as well. Most of the US's best athletes focus on football and basketball. As with any sport anybody can beat anyone, but especially in baseball when a pitcher is in a groove.
I never said we have more talent in baseball, I'm talking generally in all sports. Look at the South Korean baseball team, that's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. If our athletes were as disciplined, strong fundamentalists, strong pride etc as they were, we'd dominate in almost everything with the talent we have here. Look at what Argentina did when the took the gold in the Olympics, did we have a thousand times the talent they did then? Of course, but we had team for of spoiled athletes - without that discipline, lesser pride(and yes that team showed that) and lack of fundamentals(which we don't appreciate as much here, flashy is what sells tickets).

Baseball to me is the most boring of the three major sports in America but that is my opinion. Too much idle time for me in baseball. If it was not for beer and shelled peanuts, I would have a fit sitting there watching an entire game.

I do think if they eliminated the "offsides" penalty in soccer, that would open up more scoring and I believe the sport in America would start to be more popular. I have watched a lot of soccer games and to me if the defense allows the offensive man to get behind them, that is the defense's fault..why give the offense a penalty?
I do hate there are more youth playing soccer now across America now than organized football or baseball...sad! To me football in America defines who we are.."shut up or we will kick your ass" mentality. Teaches kids that ties are acceptable...thats crap!

I've never claimed to be a die-hard soccer fan, not once, I'm an occasional fan..but love the World Cup with a passion, just the atmosphere...I rarely miss a US team match though. It doesn't take a die-hard fan to recognize the endurance and athletes soccer possesses. I love basketball and football like the next person, but that doesn't mean I have to be dumb about it when looking at the athletes and our arrogance when it comes to sports. Some of the things I've read in this thread have to be the dumbest things I've read on here with the view of soccer, it's a ****ing joke really, like 1950's ignorant mentality. Our sports are a joke compared to other sports in the toughness area especially and yet we are arrogant as can be like we're the baddest mf'ers alive, all while the rest of the world laughs at us.

Soccer players are not better athletes than those in other major sports. No more so than a marathon runner being a better athlete than a 100 meter sprint champion.
I've had the opportunity to compete at a fairly high level in one sport (kickboxing) and to train with fairly high level athletes in two other sports (boxing - grappling). I can tell you that I have personally seen professional level athletes from several other sports try to compete in all three of these and they are easily exhausted and run out of gas quickly in the ring or on the mat when they start training.
Are they not the same level athlete as the old boy who cuts trees for a living who is wearing their behinds out and running them out of gas with ease on the mat? Of course they are, but they are not in kickboxing shape, grappling shape, etc. Each and every sport, including baseball, requires a different type of conditioning and of course a different skill set.
Two of the best athletes that ever walked through my gym door were former standout baseball players. Take any player in the World Cup, the NBA, or the NFL (who doesn't already have some sort of MMA training) and put them on the mat grappling live with a Eddie Bravo or a Robert Drysdale and they will be completely and utterly spent in 3 minutes. I've seen it too many times. Does that mean that Bravo or Drysdale (who aren't what the general public would recognize as great athletes) are better athletes than these guys? Of course not.
It truly is apples and oranges.
I have a friend in England, and that's a die-hard fan. They're crazy about their "football".
I do keep up with the World Cup, but I can't watch a full game, because it's horribly boring.
I think there are a lot of "posers" out there. When the World Cup is on, and they know a lot of American's don't watch the sport, they have to seem as if they are into it 100%. World Cup isn't on, and they'll never watch a US Soccer game. It's facts.
I agree with 7teen, soccer players are pansies. Even the friend from England, who is die-hard, can tell me every little thing going on, will admit they are pansies. Great athletes, in amazing shape for agility, and such, but they can't take a lot of physical contact.
But then they say our "football" is a weaker, padded version of rugby, haha
and Gotch is right... before I trained MMA, I was a football player and in some good shape.. stepped onto a MMA mat, and it was intense. That is the best conditioning and training I've EVER done. That's why you see so many pro athletes from other sports, doing MMA/Boxing/Kick boxing training these days.
IMO the reason soccer isn't more popular in the US isn't so much the sport itself--a ton of people play it. It's because outside of the World Cup when people root for the national team, the CASUAL fan doesn't care who wins. It's hard for soccer to stay in the public eye when the nation only really gets into it once every four years. Maybe if the World Cup were every two years instead of four this might change.
Sure there's a pro league (MLS) now but it has a small # of teams by US pro league standards and it's relatively new. So unless you live in a city with a team or like a particular player, again the casual fan has no connection.
Plus it hasn't helped that the US has sucked for so many years. Becoming more competitive has definitely helped the sport gain interest here.
Soccer will never rank higher than fourth in sports interest in America. And to be honest, I don't think it is even that high right now. After foootball, baseball, and basketball, how would you rank these sports in popularity in America: NASCAR, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Hockey.
I honestly think that if you had a run of the mill game on of each of those 6 sports mentioned there, then Soccer comes in just ahead of Tennis with Tennis being last. If Tiger Woods is playing, Golf would probably be viewed fourth after the Big 3.
Of course when you have your big events, each of these sports has their day. Hockey had the Olympics. Golf and Tennis have their majors. NASCAR has bigger races like Daytona and Indy. Soccer has the World Cup. Each of those will peak in interest during those events. But when those events aren't being played, I think Soccer ranks in about 7th or 8th in American popularity.
If you go back to 95, 14 NL Cy Young award winners are Americans. In the AL, 10 of the CY Young award winners are American with a Dominican winning the award three times and a Venezuelan (Johan Santana) winning it twice. Baseball is huge in the Dominican but they don't pitch it like we do.
I can agree with that. They like offense better it seems like. We still are going to have the highest percentage of players in the majors, but the Domicans are tough. If you rearranged a few of their players for other positions (so many are great SS) you could have an amazing team.
I'd pay good money to watch our best play their best. They'd have us murdered at 1B and SS that is for sure. However, our outfielders would blow them away though. One thing I do know, the best catcher in the world is an American.
Defensively our OF could be very good, but DR could put one HR crunching bunch out there. Nelson Cruz, Jose Bautista, and Manny. Defensively it would suck.
Bautista is all or nothing he's the Dominican version of Adam Dunn. Of course, we would have the added advantage of Manny. He may show up and decide not to play that day and strike out four or five times without swinging the bat.
