There's an extra pair of new phragms, but you're not gonna sell me those drivers as new with mismatched and backward terminals.:D
However, they are exceptionally nice beyond the terminal issues.
I am running a pair of 288-16K versions. What would be the difference in sound quality between the K and G versions? - If any at all?
Anybody compared the two?
Nothing really.
If the G's have been abused, then they may sound 'worse' due to lower magnetic charge.
I'd wager that few people could tell the difference between a G, a K and a 299, if they were all fitted with the same diaphragm, such as the spare pair offered here.
I'll bet they'll top US$1300-1400.
I have to disagree about the "nothing really"
Alnico does certainly sound different, as does Neo. But it's been discussed to death here already, so I recommend searching the forum instead of re-opening the debate.
As far as abuse, not likely that a driver has been overheated, much more likely with a woof.
I will wager you are spot on about the pricing. My bet is 1400, as 1200-1300 is common.
I should have collected a warehouse full of 288s back when I worked for Altec Corp or the Altec Contractor in Houston...Would be worth way more than my 401K....lol
You're right about that Frank!
Are we starting a pool on these?
Maybe, given the G is alnico, but was the last 288 WITHOUT the Tangerine phasing plug. Your K's, of course, have them. The H was the last to have alnico, and first with the Tangerine, only one with both.
It may, or may not, be a selling point, depending on the buyer.
So, does this affect the pool? I'll bet not.
Try alnico ceramic

Anyway, in a nutshell the compression modes of alnico and ceramic are different....also try a net search, as this is speaker info in general not specific to Altec
in the thread is a link to LH
Well.
I was wildly wrong. US$510 and reserve not met.
Turns out that there were only one pair of diaphragms, and you had to install them.
Will be curious to see if they relist.
Sort of like the guy who has relisted a pair of 620/604-8g that many times, that the last round only went to $350-400. I think he must have an unrealistic reserve, and its pissed people of.
That makes 2 of us. The last pair sold for almost $1400 but this pair I think may have some issues now that I have looked at them much more closely. They were probably driven hard. The fact that the original diaghrams are long gone.Plus the binding post issues they weren't obviously handled with much care.
Sometimes 291-B's sell cheap, just change the frams

They are already up to $455 :(
Wonder how much they'll go for? They look nice.
Sales seem slow at the moment. My 604-8K pair did not sell. Very few bids, nowhere near reserve price. Maybe cause it's summer?
