Hi,
I got a pair of these recently for a sound system for my basement music room. I think they are A7 but not sure which version or when they were made.

I think 1968 or 1978 due to date codes of "8" on the speakers. Has
802D 16ohm 15", horn drivers 391831 836 416.

You leave off important details...
Woofer frames? Old almost certainly 68. Newer 15 frames were phased in starting around 71 or so. 12's had them earlier.
New, 78.
My guess is 68 due to the 802D, G was current in 78. Again, with old frames that would be certain.
Analogmike, after seeing PT posing with one of your FX boxes i gotta ask: Who are you?
Did i also catch a pic of Vinni Moore, and maybe another of Trey Anastasio?
By all means, post up some pics of your Altecs, you're sure to learn far more than you ever wanted to about them here.
I think there'll be at least a few folks here who will be very interested in what you do/build as well.

I don't know what a frame is on those but the picture should show it.

Hi Mike, OG was talking about the frames on the woofers.You can give a more accurate age on verifying the frames.:welcome: You can put that amp in your pocket ;) That shows how efficient the Altecs really are.:2thumbsup:

1968 is my guess. Looks like a 5/8" plywood cabinet.
So, they're A7-500's, not sure that question was ever really answered.
Agree with the other posters that '68 is the vintage, green paint on the components is a strong clue, they didn't use it very many years past that point.

Does seem to be mostly 5/8" plywood construction.
So I guess they are 1968 A7-500?

Nice decibal level for one watt! I would agree with Bowtie's estimate of approximately 1969. The last three digits of 391836 (stamped on your woofer) is the date code on your 416-A woofer. The 8 is the last digit of the year of manufacture (1968) and the 36 signifies the 36th week of 1968. So your woofer was manufactured in September 1968--your A7-500's were probably assembled around 1969.....Quote:

It's just my WAG after all, but there sure is a lot of that vintage Altec still in circulation today which seems to indicate that "product" was sellin just fine.
