Doesn't the Wise SB televise their meetings? And, has anyone heard anything on whether or not they appointed a new member to fill Vanessa Perry's vacated seat? Could get interesting if they appointed one who is not in favor of consolodation.

I thought they did on channel 10 with Comcast? Sometimes those board meetings are like the Jerry show without the hitting and of course the use of a larger vocabulary.
They are filmed and aired at a later date. Was there tonight and they appointed Larry Greear to fill the unexpired term of Vanessa Perry. Betty Cornette, Rocky Cantrell, and Mark Hutchinson were not present. Some sort of boycott I would imagine. Another proposal on the table. Build a new school in Wise and a new one in PV. Remodel Coeburn for about 10 million and spend very little in Appy, Pound, and St. Paul. Provide transporation from Pound to the new school, to be named, in Wise, and also provide transporation from Appy to the new school in PV, yet to be named. Dr. Perry was given the okay to present this plan to the Board of Supervisors. Will cost about 70 million to keep all 6 high schools open. You might call this a compromise.
Since those three were so conspicuously absent and the others weren't, does that imply to the public that maybe, just maybe, there was some sort of illegal meeting happening with someone somewhere? I mean, to me, that is a pretty good indicator that something shady has happened.
So, in other words, keep all six open, is this for one more year,or does it have no "time-line"? But leave open the inevitable reality that the schools will be closingin the next year? It doesn't sound like much of a proposal to me. More like a band-aid. And, also, is this not within the cost of the original plan of 3 schools, 3 sites? Someone has their screws loose on this one.
Think the intent was to appease both sides and come to some sort of a compromise. Am sure the battle is not over. Have found late in life that the more options you offer to folks, the more confused they become. Just do it and get it over with and move on. This situation is holding the progress of Wise County Schools and Wise County as a whole. This affects economic development big time.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for consolidation, but along the lines of their original plan of 3 schools, 3 sites deal. And yeah, it is definately a hindrance to economic development. Get it done and over with.
How could it be illegal? The attorney stated that a quorum was present.
I alway thought that a quorom could only discuss old business and not new. Probably wrong on that, but been wrong before.
Not according to Robert's Rules of Order.
Actually, it is for meetings, but officials can "suspend" them for certain things if such actions require them to. And to R/T, I knew that, just had a brain fart. Thanks.
Should be a majority. Course, we don't do anything else right.:D
Seems as if even the folks that voted aren't sure they are legal.
Quorum a question for Wise County School Board - Kingsport Times-News Online
WISE -- Wise County School Board Attorney Scott Mullins is seeking an opinion from the Virginia Attorney General's office what constitutes a quorum when a vacancy exists on an eight-member board. On Monday three of the board's seven members were absent from a regularly scheduled session. Chairman Ted Thompson announced that Mullins advised that with a vacancy, four members provided a quorum and Monday's meeting proceeded, in cluding a 4-0 vote to appoint Larry Greear of Coeburn ....
Well, folks, ya know how rumors are, and they just keep flying. Latest rumor going around is that according to the website www.vsb.org(I have not looked this up)five members must be present to establish a quorom for them to have a legal meeting. Like I say, I have not looked this up as of yet, but if that is true, then I think they just had an illegal meeting all the way around including the appointment of Greear.
Couldn't find anything in that site, be happy if someone could find it for me. I think it would have to be a majority, hence 5 of 8, but since there were 7 members, 4 was a majority and sounds legit. I would think they would have known the rules beforehand and wouldn't do something so blatantly against the rules, don't really care anyway since the three stooges wanted to pout and not show up.
Find myself agreeing with R13 on this one. The next meeting should be really interesting.
Me? I really don't care one way or the other anymore. Thoe county government and the school board have made the county the laughing-stock of the whole state over all the partisan politics that is happening. I hate to say it, but I also am inclined to agree with the boy on this, too. But apparently someone involved either is trying to cover their bases or is really unsure about the whole thing. Either way, if Cuccinelli rules against the meeting, then, it will get really interesting. If that happens, then will the same three still boycott the meetings to keep from having a quorom? If that happens, then what recourse would the people have?
