Tonight's listening adventure was MR94B's/288-16G's on top of 816VI's/515-16GHP's with a simple 6.5 uF crossover and a DCR of about 13 ohms. Caps are old Sprague 118P's.

Impressions - The 816VI' are weaker in the low bass than the 604's, but the manta's and 288's really add more "air" to the mids and highs. Neither finding a surprise I suppose. Some great sounding stuff on SE 45's....

If you get used to it, you'll miss the heavy damping the open stud bays and exposed fiberglass are providing. I'd be tempted to install grill cloth instead of sheetrock.
With some carpet down, that'd be an awesome listening space just the way it is.................... for my preferences, i like a soft, well damped room. definitely stirs my envy a bit.
Now i'm not sure which space i like better, the "cave" or the kitchen. The whole package is is truly awesome, kudos and congrats Allan!:2thumbsup:
Actrually was thinking Tyvek for an interim, fairly long term solution to seal away the fiberglass particles. It would also breathe any water that gets into the walls. Biggest issue would be keeping open flames away from it. However, if the walls are subsequently lined with speakers, that solves part of the problem. Then it's just the ceiling.Quote:

Just staple a layer of polyester batting over the wall and the fibers will be sealed in -- poly is acoustically transparent and can be covered with burlap treated with a fire retardant. I think there may be a diy recipe on the Acoustics AA posted by John Risch.
Where is the fridge? A true man cave MUST have that. A cold brew always makes everything sound better. Think I'll have one myself right now...
If any of those are external walls, don't you require a vapour retarder? For damping you can always use Donnacona aka low density fiberboard over it.
With an amazing mancave and collection like that--if your wife did understand, you'd have my vote for being the luckiest man alive! Even if she doesn't understand, just the fact that she's tolerating all the construction/collecting/time involved etc. puts you in the running in my book......Quote:

I changed out the 288s for a pair of 902-8B's with adapters last night, and to tell you the truth, I don't hear much difference. I do hear some intermittent crackling which I think is coming from the pre amp, so I brought up PAS-3 and a Foreplay II last night, along with a Sony TT with a Biotracker arm and AT-15Sa cartridge. Now hopefully one of these bloody pre amps will have a working phonograph stage. Also brought up the small GPA horns for a trial with the 420A's in the Madrids.

I made my walls as solid as I could. I used 5/8" sheetrock. The wall space of course filled with fiberglass.
For the ceiling, I stuffed the 8" joists with R19 then built an acoustic tile covering.
The floor which is concrete (basement) is covered with a thick pad and thick carpeting.
I use various wall treatments to stop the slap echo.
Find the Acoustic Handbook by alton Everist.....it's quite good.

I suggest at least 4 of the 8184 subs, possibly 8. That would rattle the fiberglass loose! I have 2 in my much smaller listening room, and they are awesome!
