Does anyone know the latest on the merger? I had heard that comparable AT&T phones will be mailed out to existing Alltel customers in early FALL... and everyone would be informed on when they would start using them. Anyone heard this??

The letter I got said we would get another letter in the mail in the fall in which you would choose to get an AT&T phone comparable to yours or upgrade via mail. It would then be mailed to you prior to the date of service switch and as of a certain date you can use the phone. This would help with 40,000 people showing up at a retail store on the date of the switch. So from what I have understood is most everything will be thru the mail.
Last I read it was pushed back to later this year and possibly next year.
I have been following this thread on Howard Forums for updates on the merger. The thread started nearly a year ago though so some of the information on the first few pages may not be entirely accurate. There seems to be a few people who work for Alltel on there and get some information before it's known officially.
Although I can't find anything about an expected time frame for when it'll happen that goes along with what's on the at&t site's merger info for existing customers.Quote:

The letter I got didn't give a time frame for when we'd be notified about choosing a new phone, just that it would be done in time to have the new phone on hand when the switch was official. The switch could take "up to a year."
I think what I'm going to do is wait and see what the plans are like for us locally when they send out the paperwork, then decide whether to stay with AT&T or go with Verizon. I'm not under contract now, just waiting to see what will work better.
I'm doubtful as to how solid the coverage for AT&T will be for us rural folks. Their commercials and their maps say they cover 97% of Americans, but that other 3% is the rural minority - how many dead zones will we find traveling in SWVA, NETN, NWNC, WV...
There wont be any tower sharing like Verizon/Alltel had.

Thanks all,, I too am out of contract, just waiting to see what will happen. I guess the way it reads you can stay with your current Alltel plan even when AT&T takes over. I've had cell service since the days of 360 degrees..( 95-96 ) Loyalty doesn't mean squat in this day in age.
AT&T's plans are simliar.
Ill be signing up for Sprint in Dec, good by to Alltell (the worst co since Enron) and AT&T.
Apparently AT&T has begun allowing our area to select our new phones. Not sure when we start on the AT&T network though.

I am thinking very seriously about switching to Verizon too but wonder if I can get out of my contract right now at Alltel. I have about 5 months left on it and I thought ATT was going to let you out of the contract but wasn't sure if I could do it now or if I have to wait until everything is finalized. Anyone know for certain?
From what I gather after the switch happens you have 30 days to get out of your contract for free. After the 30 days, however, the ETF would apply.
Got my e-mail notification today to pick out my new phone. Have a delivery confirmation date of December 4th. The confirmation also said that I would receive the date of the switch over with my phone. So I guess that still puts the date to start using around the middle of December. BTW, I opted out of my Alltel contract and signed up for AT&T and got the new 4G I-phone. Actually my monthly bill is going to be a lot cheaper than with Alltel and it is basically the same plan type. Had to pay extra for the I-phone as it wasn't part of the list of free phones they were offering. There is also no word yet on the Wi-Fi internet cards yet. That is to come later.

I received the 'packet' to choose a new phone today... I'm sure most everyone else did also. My question is,, I was offered 3 different phone options and going on line several more options. I basically use my phone just as a phone,,no texting etc..But some of the free phones I was offered has all the bells and whistles,, but can't tell from what I've read so far, by choosing one of these phones if I still pay my current monthly charge or will ATT automatically upgrade my plan with the 'bells and whistles' phone. Has anyone else had time to research all the options yet??
When I did ours online it gave the option to keep your current plan or 3 or 4 options for a new AT&T plan. So don't think they'd automatically upgrade your plan.
From my understanding if you currently just have a regular phone then all they are offering you for free are regular phones. Just because you get a phone with the qwerty keyboard or something like that doesn't mean they will automatically upgrade your plan. You should be okay if you select any of the free phone options they give you. If by some reason they messed up on your selection process, stay away from the phones HTC Aria, Blackberry Curve, and Palm Pre Plus. You shouldn't have the option to select these since you currently are not on a smart phone plan, but if you do have the option, don't choose them. The rest of the phones should be free for you to choose with no changes to your plan.
I got my packet and called in about it to seeif upgrading to I-phone to go now or wait, currently have a BB curve so I get that free. I asked about I-phone upgrade, rep told me take the free phone as it is mine, I have 30 days to decide to upgrade or opt-out and go with Verizon as he said that's who he has (guy was in the Lebanon center, I asked) if I upgrade to the I-phone then I keep the BB as a backup, you don't turn these in when you upgrade it's yours to do with as you please with you own it. He said you can switch the SIM card and use BB at work or whatever and then swap to I-phone when you come home, as it doesn't affect you plan, phone won't work without the SIM card and same plan applies to each SIM card.
Could you take the free phone then upgrade to another phone and sell the free one? It should sell well if you upgrade soon after you get it.
That guy told you wrong about changing the sim card, the operating system requirements are totally different and will not work. Check with another representative.Quote:

I guess theroretically you can sell the phone, the person would have to add the BB pln to it I think dunno, be noce to keep both and still have BBM contacts to those that keep a BB.
For those of you that have gotten your packets does anyone know what the phones that they offer for the BB curve and also what are the prices to update to a better phone? Is it the same cost as if you joined at&t outside of the merger? Just curious As i am in one of the last areas to choose our phones.

And I was also given the option to change the plan to a new AT&T plan so I image it'd be like starting a new contract or upgrading a current one. For example, you can get an iPhone for $99 with a 2 year contract.
Do you know how much it is for the BB torch?
My upgrade options show the Blackberry Torch is $99
They're ****ing me off already. When that upgrade link was first posted, the Bold 9700 was an option (and my recommended one at that). Now they've removed that and are only offering the Curve 9300.
I paid for two Tour 9630's and they just want to trash those and force me to the Curve? The Curve is like a toy phone compared to the Tour.
No, I don't want a Torch or an iPhone. I want the Bold.
A coworker of mine has had much more success with getting info by calling AT&T customer service rather than relying on what's online. Seems the online offerings are very restricted and not terribly accurate (esp. regarding the plans)Quote:
